    I have always heard his teammates sticking up for him and not being bothered by his antics on the field. They have said that he's a good teammate and clubhouse guy. I've heard many sportswriters give their opinions otherwise, but to me it seems like speculation based on his on field antics. As far as what he's like personally, I have no clue, but I won't assume the worst about him. It's absolutely fair enough that people "hate" him based off of his performance during his first years here.

    I think everyone is in agreement that we need starting pitching help. Most of us are confident that we will get it. However, your suggestion that if the Sox don't go all in this year, they will have missed their opportunity is off base. This team is set up to contend for the foreseeable future. If it doesn't happen this year, we will have a good shot next year, Papi or no Papi.

    He might not be. He hasn't been in most of his starts. I have never said otherwise.

    This is not a question of whether it will work in improving the accuracy. It's the principle of having technology doing the job in place of a person. The fact that the umpire still has plenty to do is irrelevant.

    I am sure that I would not have liked the DH either had I been alive back then. I'm a huge fan of data and stats, and using available information to improve. I think the available information should be used to improve the umpiring, and it has been used to improve the umpiring. But I don't think it should be used to allow technology to replace humans. Humans are not meant to be perfect. If 85% is the best that humans can be, then so be it.

    I agree that the public outcry exists. I am sure that we will eventually see the day where automated strike zones are used because of the outcry.

    I have understood what your argument is. To me, equipping the umpires with the technology that will determine whether a pitch is a ball or a strike, and then having the umpire call ball or strike based on the determination made by the technology, is still replacing the human aspect. The technology is still doing the work for the umpire. That's no different to me than getting rid of the umpire altogether. I would have no problem with the umpires looking at data after each 1/2 inning to see how they did, and trying to make improvements during the game on calls that they were missing. They are already using this data in between games, and they are improving.

    As Jack Flap just posted in another thread, they were never going to maintain the pace they set earlier in the year, but they will also not be as bad as they have been in the past week. The offense will be fine.

    The good news is, this thread has been a great source of entertainment for me. And Clay did what we needed him to do. He kept the team in the game. At this point, we are not looking for him to be an ace or a #2/3, even though I still think he can be, we are looking for him to fill in the back end of the rotation. The bad news is, this offense is really starting to tick me off.

    Thank you. To be honest with you, I think you're the only one in this thread who disagrees with my opinion but has accepted and respected it. This post was more directed at 'The Others'.

    I can understand your choice of Bogaerts, but I disagree that it's a no-contest. Strong cases can be made for a handful of other players.

    Perhaps I should have said that being the best player, as determined by the stats, WAR in particular, does not necessarily mean being the most valuable player. If Wright were to have a season ending injury, would that hurt the team's season outlook more than if Bogaerts or Papi were to have a season ending injury? IMO, it's a tough call, even though Bogaerts is the clear winner by WAR. There are intangibles and 'indirect effects' that others have mentioned, such as mentoring teammates and saving the BP, that are quite valuable that don't show up in the stats. Also, there have been players with MVP type numbers in the past who have missed considerable time due to injury, and their teams didn't miss a beat while they were out. That begs the question about how valuable they really were. This is not meant to say that Bogaerts is not the MVP so far. As I posted earlier, there are several names that could be mentioned and I really couldn't argue against them.

    For me, a lot of being against robot umps is with the fundamental idea of humans being replaced by robots/automated systems. I understand that times have changed and that technology can do things better, faster, and in most cases, cheaper. I get that. It doesn't mean that I have to like it. I am willing to give up 13% in accuracy in order to keep human umpires. What is so wrong with that being MY preference?

    As with Pablo, there were/are a lot of assumptions made about the type of person Lackey is. What I've heard about him from his teammates suggest that he is not the terrible person that some people think he is. That said, I can certainly understand being frustrated with the way he pitched for the first part of his contract.

    I never really understood the hate for Lackey. Then again, I don't get the hate for Pablo either.

    I agree, it's hard to promote someone when he's not producing in AAA. But I also agree that he shouldn't have lost the starting job based on spring training. As you suggest, it seems that there is more to the story.
