  1. I agree that the FO never intended for Swihart to be the starting catcher, once Vazquez was fully healthy and ready to go. IMO, they rushed Vazquez back because of what they saw in Swihart over that first handful of games. They panicked. And once they sent Swihart down, they should have let him focus on his work behind the plate. I certainly hope that the FO is not operating under the same 'sense of urgency' that they did last year. It's a long season. There's no need to panic in April. Patience.
  2. As it should be. There is great value in a starting pitcher who not only makes most of his starts, but also pitches deep in most games.
  3. They could always do a 'fake' DL for Vazquez or Leon, but otherwise, it would make no sense for Swihart to start the season in the bigs ahead of Vaz or Leon. I don't think the FO would be that stupid.
  4. Congrats to Pudge, Bagwell, and Raines for getting in. IMO, someone needs to take a serious look at the HOF voting process. This is not meant to defend anything that Schilling has said, but the fact that he lost 31 votes is rather disconcerting. Last year, 31 voters thought that he was worthy of being in the HOF, and now they don't? Did his stats change from last year to this year? Sorry, but that's just not right.
  5. Keep 'em coming.
  6. Yay.
  7. Yes, Porcello will be fine too. I think we both agree that Porcello will show a bit of regression, and Price will show some regression too, towards the good.
  8. But I do agree with this statement in the article: "...pulling the plug on Swihart’s catching six games into the season looked like a rash decision..." I think the Sox hurt the development of both Swihart and Vazquez with their decisions last year, which I thought were very rash. As far as who will emerge as our starting catcher this season, I am really pulling for Vazquez. I have nothing against Swihart or Leon, but I fell in love with Vazquez during his short stint in 2014. That's the guy that I want behind the plate.
  9. I guess part of the reason that I'm not concerned is because of the strength of our starting rotation. As we've discussed before, the starters' ability to regularly pitch deep into games should make the pen better. Of course there will still be games when the pen has to be called on earlier than expected, but in most cases, Farrell should be able to use his relievers the way he wants to rather than being forced to use someone in a role that he didn't want to.
  10. I'm not feeling the concern for our bullpen that some others are. Barring injury or fluky randomness, our team will be very good. I thought we were very good before making any moves this offseason. After the moves we are only that much better. Our offense should still be one of the best, if not the best, in the league, even without Ortiz.
  11. It's easy to get excited and overly enthusiastic about a player like Beni. I think he will do well for the most part, and I agree that he will give us better overall LF production than we had last year.
  12. I feel more confidence in Price than Porcello also, and I'm a huge Porcello fan. Price will be fine.
  13. When his first option was picked up for the 2015 season, he wasn't anywhere near the 7th SP. I considered him to be our #2 starter going into the season.
  14. Very good post Jack.
  15. Team depth, in general, is a concern. We should be fine covering short term injuries. We don't have a lot of flexibility should we need to cover a long term injury.
  16. A man after my own heart.
  17. I can understand not trusting Clay. I don't trust Clay. But I know the potential is there, and even if he doesn't pitch a full season, he has a good chance of being worth $13 million. Just as I have said about Porcello's contract that even if he pitched like crap for the entire 4 years, I would do that extension every time, the same holds for Clay's option. It's well worth the risk.
  18. Beni should be fine. However, as others have pointed out, we are placing rather lofty expectations on a youngster who is largely unproven at the major league level.
  19. Starter depth.
  20. I am not suggesting that we only sign inferior players for cheap. I was just saying that I don't understand the opinion that Clay's option was not worth the $13 mil risk but that Price's enormous contract was a good deal. That was not meant to be a knock on Price or on Dombrowski for signing Price.
  21. Papi and Schilling are great postseason players because they are great players, period. In the eyes of the fans, postseason performances stand out more than regular season performances for obvious reasons. So for the fans, it does add to their stature. Statistically speaking, however, their postseason stats shouldn't be given any more weight than their regular season stats.
  22. If Farrell had left Papi in the game and Papi injured himself trying to score from second, there would have been a lot of criticism towards Farrell for not sending in a pinch runner. Pinch running for Papi once he reached second base was the right call. I can agree that Pomeranz was probably a better choice, but it's not one of those choices where one option was light years better than the other. Regardless, Farrell does not deserve the blame for Wright's injury. It's just one of those things.
  23. I disagree. The contracts can most certainly be compared. Which deal has more risk? A one year deal @ $13 mil or a 7 year deal @ $217 mil? IMO, that question can be answered pretty much regardless of who the players are, and it's not even a close decision. The amount of risk involved in a contract is a significant part of whether the contract is a good one or not. Obviously it's not the only factor, but it's a significant factor. My main point is that Buchholz' option was only for one year. And it was for a reasonable amount on top of that. It was a good deal to make. So good, in fact, that it was a no brainer last year.
  24. Assuming that our starters stay healthy. As I posted before, making the playoffs often doesn't come down to the starting players, but rather how well a team can cover those starting players in case of injury.
  25. I'm not talking about this year. I'm talking about future years, after the tax has been reset and the FO is likely more willing to go over the limit again. I acknowledged that a lot of things had to fall into place for Castillo to be called up. Also, I'm not necessarily talking about a 4th outfielder role, but a starting role. If, heaven forbid, one of our outfielders suffers a long term injury, Castillo could make sense as his replacement.
