  1. The truth of the matter is that most teams do use more than 8 starting pitchers to get through the season. They might not use their #9 and #10 guys for a lot of starts, but they do go that far down the depth chart.
  2. Theo also had the knack for knowing when to let our big free agents walk. As a fan, I didn't always like it, but his decision not to re-sign someone was right more often than not.
  3. You know this as well as anyone, spring training results usually mean nothing. Small Sample Size. It would be a different story if Leon or Vaz had options remaining. So yeah, assuming good health, Swihart starts in AAA no matter what happens.
  4. LOL I agree!
  5. Which might explain why I am not the Red Sox GM....
  6. What I previously thought would happen was that Wright would be in the pen, not that I agree with that. But after reading some recent comments, I now believe that ERod will start in AAA, which makes the most sense to me. Nothing against ERod, but I really think we need give Pomeranz a real chance as a starter before committing him to a relief role. I don't like the idea of Wright in the pen. I think this question came up before, but does Elias really have an option remaining? That would be great if he did. If he doesn't, we risk losing him. As far as who to add, I honestly haven't looked to see who is available. I read this morning that the Twins just signed Vogelsong and Tepesch to minor league deals. As you have stated many times, this is the type of signing that Dombrowski needs to be looking into.
  7. Again, the importance of depth. I read an article about how often the difference in teams making the playoffs versus not making the playoffs is not because of players like Trout, but it's because of the quality of the players who replace guys like Trout when there's an injury. Trout might be an extreme case, but you get the point.
  8. I agree 100%. At this point, we really don't know what we have in any of the 3 catchers. Unless we are blown away by an offer for any of them, I think it makes the most sense to keep all 3 at least until we get a better sense of how things will play out. If Swihart wins the starting job based on spring training results, meaning we lose either Leon or Vazquez, that would be really, really stupid. I know that need might dictate otherwise, but I really hope that the Sox are committed to Swihart as a catcher for the entire season.
  9. Or it could be just randomness. LOL
  10. I would still have Varitek on the team if it were up to me.
  11. LOL You crack me up. I read an article yesterday about Dombrowski allowing Swihart to compete for the starting catcher job. Unless Leon or Vazquez is injured, having Swihart on the Opening Day roster would be a huge mistake, IMO. He has options. He needs to start in AAA to maintain our depth, not to mention that I think he would really benefit from some more time there.
  12. Agreed. My original point was about having a major injury early in the season, or even during spring training.
  13. Fair point.
  14. At this point, I'd definitely rather keep Swihart than trade him. That said, I think I'm a little more hopeful with Vaz and Leon than you are. Maybe it's just wishful thinking. But there is something about defensive oriented catchers that really floats my boat. I don't care about offense at the catching position.
  15. LOL The 'O' is right next to the 'I', so I guess I can buy that excuse. You're right, for the amount the FO is probably willing to spend, finding an upgrade over what we currently have could be tough. I am with you 100% on the depth.
  16. I don't disagree, but one major injury would likely use up what little wiggle room we have.
  17. It's not necessarily a rebuilding team that we would trade with. If a contending team suffers an injury at catcher, they would most definitely be interested in Leon or Vazquez, as well as Swihart. That said, I am not condoning the trade of any of our catchers until at least the deadline.
  18. I think Swihart has more value to other teams than some think. If we're trading a cost controlled player like Swihart, I would expect a cost controlled reliever in return, or I would expect the other team to eat a good bit of the salary of the returning player. Otherwise, it's probably not worth trading him.
  19. I don't usually point out typos, as we're all guilty of making them, but this one is too funny not to point out. LOL Outside of that, I pretty much agree with this post. I would like to add one more reliever for the 25 man roster, but I'm fine if all we add are some depth options.
  20. Agreed. The team is in somewhat of a bind as far as acquiring any more players. The good news is, our team looks really good and we don't need to add any players. The only concern is if we suffer a major injury early in the season and need a replacement. But that's a concern for pretty much every team.
  21. Hopefully, Smith can be the that premium midseason reliever acquisition. He won't cost us anything.
  22. There is a wide interpretation of what a sport is. I see car racing as a sport only because it's widely accepted as a sport. I think people are okay if someone doesn't believe an activity is a sport, so long that belief doesn't carry with it the belief that the participants of that activity are somehow lesser 'athletes'. I'm not saying that you or anyone here is doing that, but I get the feeling that this is what the defenders of a certain activity/sport take issue with. I think when someone says car racing is not a sport it carries with it the implication, whether real or only assumed, that race car drivers are less deserving of respect than other athletes? Maybe I'm off base. Having never raced a car, it would be unfair of me to assume that the work, preparation, athleticism, etc. are not on par with that of a football player or a wrestler.
  23. LOL As a chick, I can honestly say that while I appreciate a well-timed long ball, I much prefer a well-pitched, well-defended game.
  24. That makes sense. I still don't agree with the starvation diets, but at least I understand why they would want to wrestle at a lower weight.
  25. Sure, ideally we'd pick up another 8th inning guy. Realistically, that's not going to happen, especially with the way the price of back end relievers has gone out of control. We have our 8th and 9th inning guys. We have a couple of other guys who could step into the 8th inning role if needed. I would still like to pick up another reliever or 2, but I think our pen will be okay.
