  1. Frankly, that's what it is Bell. It's not the popular explanation, but it's the correct one. And no, it's not a explanation that stat people resort to when all else fails. It just is.
  2. Why do you assume that people who believe in stats have not played on championship teams? Your statement is very insulting.
  3. I 100% disagree with your perception here.
  4. As I have said before, if we win a championship in the next 3 years, then it will all have been worth it. That said, I am thinking that if we do win a championship in the next 3 years, there is a pretty good chance that we could have won one without depleting the farm.
  5. Theo absolutely knows how to go for it. He went for it without mortgaging the farm or the long term outlook of any of his teams. There is no comparison to what Theo did with the Sox or with the Cubs to what Dombrowski it doing. There is also no comparison to what Ben did in 2013 to what Dombrowski is doing.
  6. No Dojji, you are wrong about what happens in the playoffs. The shorter the series, the smaller the sample, the more randomness plays a role, and the less skill and talent play a role. Your idea that randomness plays a larger role in bigger sample sizes is flat out wrong. Planning for the long and short terms is not playing it half way. You do not have to mortgage everything else in an attempt to win now. It is possible to do both. 2013 is Exhibit A.
  7. I'm hyped!!! http://rs186.pbsrc.com/albums/x41/ressiej/Woo%20Hoo/woohoo.gif~c200
  8. I really have no clue what you're talking about.
  9. Yes, there is a lot of randomness in baseball. I never said a preponderance, but more than I think you realize. I also never said that clutch is impossible. Beyond that, I pretty much disagree with this entire post. The research that the sabermetric community does is about as far from intellectually lazy as you can get. Trust me when I say that they are still digging further into the idea of clutch. What is intellectually lazy is accepting something is so just because it's conventional wisdom or because it seems like it's true. The stat heads are now proving that many traditional beliefs about baseball are wrong, and it's hard to accept.
  10. But those players are the toughest outs or the pitchers who never give in in non pressure situations as well. These players perform well in the clutch because they are simply good players.
  11. Conclusive proof may not be possible, but there is certainly strong evidence against clutch. If the performances were completely random, you'd expect more or less the same results that we have from the actual performances.
  12. I think it's very close, but I'd give the slight edge to the Sox.
  13. This year's team is a contender either way. Sale is nice to have, but he was not a need. What happens in the playoffs is mostly a crapshoot. I am thrilled with the team that we have, but I will never agree with Dombrowski depleting our farm system, especially since he didn't build it. I am strongly against the 'win now at any cost' philosophy.
  14. What? Unless what doesn't count against the threshold?
  15. Exactly. It's because of all of the cost controlled players that we were able to sign Price.
  16. Long term financial flexibility should always be a priority, but for a team that is in 'win now' mode, if they weren't concerned about resetting the penalty, I don't think they'd be concerned about the long term.
  17. If I were a Yankees fan, I'd be excited about your youth movement. I also would not count the Yankees out this season. I don't think they'll have quite enough to get to the postseason, but I think they'll be a pretty decent team. They'll definitely be exciting to watch if you're a Yankees fan. I'm counting on Gardner and Ellsbury to drag you guys down.
  18. It's not play money. Despite what some people think, the Sox do not have an unlimited budget.
  19. One of the goals of having a strong farm is to have young, cost controlled players ready to step in when other guys leave for free agency. If you have several cost controlled guys on the team, you obviously have more money to spend on free agents.
  20. Well, if they were going to do away with Roman numerals, they should have done away with them after Superbowl L, , a nice round number, not after Superbowl LI. This is the type of thing that can keep one awake at night. Personally, I am sad to see the disappearance of Roman numerals.
  21. I think Dombrowski cares about defense, but I think he's willing to sacrifice defense if it means keeping an offensive 'juggernaut' in the game. Dombrowski seems really high on Swihart. It's possible that we have not heard much about Vazquez because he has indeed fallen out of favor with the FO, not because of something he did, but because Swihart is Dombrowski's catcher of choice.
  22. Fair enough that the team is not going advertise any doubts they have about Swihart. That said, I don't remember what specific 'noises' were made about Saltalamacchia, but I believe his defense was always in question. That's not the case with Swihart's defense. Swihart was projected to be an above average defensive catcher. The only knocks against him so far is that he doesn't measure up to Vazquez' reputation of being elite defensively and that he hasn't been given the time and opportunity to develop behind the plate.
  23. I agree that the FO is also trying to avoid long term contracts, if possible, in order to have more financial flexibility for when our youngsters become free agents. Resetting the tax penalty is a big part of gaining that flexibility. That said, I think there's a good chance Dombrowski would have signed Encarnacion if he weren't given the directive to get under the luxury tax this year. The ability to sign the guys that we want to keep could be hampered by not having the strength in the farm system that we once had.
  24. Varitek recently stated that he thinks Swihart could be a very good catcher. He reminded the team that his development will take time and not to panic. The team needs more guys like Varitek making the decisions. If they want Swihart to succeed as a catcher. put him behind the plate and leave him there.
