  1. By saying someone is clutch, you are in a sense taking some credit away from that player by implying that they are doing something otherworldly in limited big moments. The truth is that the so called clutch player is doing something 'otherworldly' all the time.
  2. Well for me, then and now. Same with Porcello's extension.
  3. Clutch is basically good players doing good things because they are good players.
  4. I am a strong believer in psychological factors as well. I always have been. I still don't believe in clutch though.
  5. Not inconsistent at all because these are two different concepts. And once again, quit exaggerating what I say.
  6. No need for the snarky post. Use the ignore feature if you don't like what the 'statisticians' and the 'experts' have to say.
  7. 1. I have never said that the fans are not mostly very supportive. 2. Fans do get on players who are playing badly. 3. The idea of clutch is not the same thing as a player not performing at his best because of something that adversely affects him. 4. I have never said that the fans can derail the entire team. What I say and what you read are often two entirely different things.
  8. Perhaps, but I don't think the pressure of the playoffs is quite the same thing as the everyday and possibly ongoing scrutiny that I'm talking about. Carl Crawford comes to mind.
  9. They did have the hearing today. A decision is expected on Thursday. This is the first arb hearing since Henry took over ownership.
  10. I agree with sk on the Hanley signing. Unlike Pablo's contract, I thought Hanley's contract was decent. I would do it again.
  11. I was very disappointed at the time that we didn't get ARod. But boy, did that turn out great for us.
  12. LOL, I should have known. The rest of the projection makers are at a disadvantage.
  13. We will miss Papi's bat for sure, but I agree that we're likely to see an increase in production from LF and 3B. I'm on board the Pablo train. Leon will not match last year's production, but I think he can be league average offensively for a catcher. I'd rather have league average offense with strong defense at catcher than the other way around. The rest of our offense should be strong enough to overcome even below average offense at catcher.
  14. Henderson's true value came from his ability to get on base, not from his ability to steal bases.
  15. I have no problem with Papi being slow on the basepaths. I was simply answering a question. Knowing that Papi was slow and knowing how many runs he cost the team are two different things. For the latter, you need stats.
  16. Absolutely worth it. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.
  17. We have seen many players who can't seem to handle the scrutiny of the Boston fans and the Boston media. Having a player underperform because of the scrutiny can certainly impact the overall success of the team. I don't see it as a problem for this team because of the overall quality of the players, but it is certainly not an absurd idea.
  18. I think we will be in that neighborhood as well.
  19. Welcome aboard Fisk! It's a great time to be a Red Sox fan! I think it will be very difficult for us to reach 100 wins, but I 100% share your excitement about this team.
  20. The outcomes of those close games is largely due to randomness. Even the might Cubs were one game under .500 in one run games. Therefore, we do need luck to be on our side to improve our record in those games.
  21. I more or less agree, though I think our offense will be better than some people think it will be.
  22. I have no doubt that this team is able to rise above the fans. IMO, the only thing stopping us from the postseason is a string of injuries above the norm.
  23. Fans can definitely be tough. And reactionary. The reactionary goes both ways, bad and good. Fans are ready to call a player a bust after a 2 week span, but they are also ready to anoint a player HOF status after a 2 week span. I guess that's the nature of the fanatic. That being said, I think the majority of the posters here are pretty level headed when it comes to that type of thing. I know I am. A few of the players like Pedroia, Betts, and Price are going to have to step it up as leaders to make sure that no one on the team is 'rattled' by the fans. I am mostly concerned about Pablo in that area, should he get off to a slow start. The fans will be ruthless.
  24. I would be thrilled if we duplicated +184. I don't think we will quite reach that number. I'm thinking more in the neighborhood of +140.
