    There are sufficient finances, within certain luxury tax limits. The Red Sox will spend within those limits, but they won't without limit. Not having the cost controlled players on the team in 3 years that we have now will provide less financial flexibility. Valid point about trading some to re-stock the farm, but when will the trades be made? Likely after the 3 year window, I'm guessing. Will the return prospects be major league ready at that time?

    I agree that a large part of the reason that Dombrowski did not make a trade was because there wasn't a trade to be made. However, I do think that Henry is also pulling the reigns on Dombrowski's aggressiveness.

    Farrell got my memo. Sale is slated to pitch in all 3 remaining series against the Yankees.

    I think the FO is now going to put more focus on the long term. I like what they did at the deadline.

    Your first sentence is spot on. Yes, there are always more prospects coming along, but that takes time. The farm should not be depleted at a rate faster than it can reasonably be restocked. The new CBA laws will make it more difficult to do so.

    I agree that building a team to get to the playoffs is the goal. I don't think the long term outlook of the team has to be compromised to do that.

    Going into the season, there was not a need for offense.

    It's not a one year window. It's a 3 year window. Resetting the tax this year will allow them greater financial flexibility in the next 2 years. My statement of 'winning now at any cost' is hyperbole, but the point stands. The FO has been building a very strong short term team at the expense of the long term.

    I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Vazquez. I love the intensity. OTOH, it's also been said that he is too intense or 'busy' behind the plate.

    I think that our best players being 25-28 and hitting FA at the same time is wherein much of the problem lies. There could be a lot of needs to fill in 3 years, without sufficient finances or farm players to fill them. That being said, I do get the sense that the FO is now going to put more focus on the long term.

    This is true. It's always been my understanding that the Sox (and other franchises) don't draft pitching just for the sake of drafting pitching, but they draft the best available player, regardless of need. As we all know, part of building a farm is to use some of the pieces in trade to fill the needs. My problem is not that Dombrowski made trades. It's the extent to which he traded away the farm, and my belief that he did not get sufficient value for some of the prospects traded.

    Or it could even happen next week with Devers. With some kids, like Pedroia, they start off looking like they don't belong, but then take off. Patience is the key.

    You are missing the point about the long term plan, both with Ben and Dombrowski. Dombrowski has us set up very well for the near future. I am not denying that. It's what happens after the 3 year window that concerns me. After seeing that Henry seems serious about staying under the luxury tax this year and reading that Henry has told Dombrowski to 'reel it in', I am more hopeful about our long term. But it remains to be seen what can be done between now and then.

    I agree completely regarding the catching situation. For me, catching has always been about defense. I would bring Varitek back if I could. I don't think the FO over estimated the offense, except perhaps at 3B. But even in that case, our offense from 3B was so bad last year that it was not unreasonable to think that Pablo could provide some improvement. The offense was likely not going to be as good as it was with Papi, but it also should not have been nearly as bad as it's been for a good part of the year.

    My hope was that Bogaerts would get extended rest when Nunez was signed, but perhaps the plan all along was to give Pedroia more of a breather than Bogaerts. Either way, it's nice to have that added flexibility. I do still think that Bogaerts would benefit from some time off.

    Here is an excellent article written by Matthew Kory back in January regarding the 3 year window. He explains it much better than I ever could. http://boston.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2017/01/20/dave-dombrowski-and-the-three-year-window/ In particular, the following paragraph rings so true with me: "Ideally a baseball organization rolls along like a bus. It stops every now and again for some people to get off, but usually others get on as well. The job of the GM is to keep all the seats filled with quality players. The perfect case scenario would see an almost seamless addition of players from the minor league system to the major league roster, with the occasional free agent signing as needed. The Red Sox were pretty close to that ideal, about as close as could reasonably be asked, when Dombrowski took over."

    Dombrowski was given the directive to 'reel it in' this trade deadline in hopes of beginning to repair some of the damage done to the farm. Henry feels the 3 year window. Are the 3 year window and subsequent cliff a foregone conclusion? Of course not, but there is definitely a lot of validity to the 3 year window.

    Porcello had been good in his last 7 starts. He had been very good in his last 5 starts. He had been excellent in his last 4 starts, with a 2.79 ERA 24 Ks against 2 BBs, averaging 7.25 innings per game. He has 0 wins to show for those last 4 performances. The offense owed him one.

    It seems that Farrell may be using Reed much like Tito uses Miller. Farrell's explanation of using Reed in the 7th was to control the running game against the top of Chicago's order. Reed is apparently very good at that. A stolen base has not been attempted against him.

    The play where he got thrown out on the grounder to shortstop was a bonehead play. A mental mistake. The play where he got thrown out on the single to right field was not the best decision, but I don't think that was a bonehead play. I would also point out that aggressive base running also resulted directly in scoring that run in the 6th inning, so it's not all bad.

    The funny thing is, people were making the exact same types of comments last year and early this year about Beni that they are now making about Devers. Beni is young and inexperienced at the major league level, as is Devers. They are both going to have their fair share of growing pains.

    I have nothing against the Dodgers either. If we don't win it all, I would not be heartbroken if they did.
