  1. IMO, our team is better with Hanley on it than without. If he needs to go on the DL to get healthy, then so be it. However, I'm not rooting for a DL stint just to take at bats away from him.
  2. There seem to be a lot of options for our infield, except at first base where we would need them if Hanley goes on the DL. Hanley being injured and unable to play 1B is what kind of handcuffed Farrell for a good part of the first half. I know that many are anti-Hanley, but I really hope that he is healthy enough to avoid the DL. I think having him as a 1B option gives us a much better look than not having him there. Hopefully Moreland is breaking out of his slump and can handle the job full time again if Hanley can't go.
  3. I tend to become very attached to our players, especially the home grown ones, but I would not give any of them one of those outrageous contracts. I'm hearing 10 yr/$300 mil being thrown around for Mookie, and maybe more when he becomes a FA. I love the guy as much as anyone else, but if that's what it's going to take to keep him, I'm showing him the door. Hearing that these guys are not interested in extending before FA tells me that they're looking for the biggest paycheck. It's disheartening, but that seems to be the case with almost all the players.
  4. It's often not the 'splashy' moves that make a difference, but the more subtle ones.
  5. I don't know that I'd go so far as to say that Dombrowski ran circles around Cashman, but I very happy with what Dombrowski did at the deadline, including the pickup of Reed. It's a small sample which is very unlikely to continue at this pace, but our team has been improved nonetheless.
  6. From what I was reading this morning, Hanley might be hitting the DL with pain in both obliques.
  7. Uncertainty is a good way of putting it. Right now, that uncertainty looks like a cliff to me, but a lot can happen between now and then. I can't agree with idea of emptying the farm to the extent that Dombrowski has, but he does have time to right the long term ship before we hit the cliff.
  8. Yes, there was rationale behind the Pablo signing. In addition to what you mentioned, our 3B production the year before was pretty bad. Pablo really should have been a decent improvement.
  9. Big Game James is no more. Make room for Big Game Drew. RED Sox for the WIN!!!
  10. ERod's pitch count seems to climb too fast. It seems like every time I look up, the opposing batter has a 3-2 count and is fouling off pitch after pitch. Maybe it's just my imagination. I am thrilled that he held the White Sox to only two runs. As you said, all in all a good outing. Kimbrel is sporting a BABIP of over .500 over the last month or so. Yeah, he's likely coming back down to earth a bit, but some of his rough patch is due to flukiness.
  11. Certainly don't want to become predictable to the point where the batters know what's coming.
  12. Of course the line up would be better if Ortiz was in it. Do you think they should be as bad as they've been without him? We led the league by over 100 runs. Doesn't it seem reasonable to think that even with losing Ortiz, we should still have a top 3 offense in the league? That type of offense should be more than sufficient to get the job done with the improved pitching staff.
  13. Harmony is okay in my book. And so is Dave Cameron.
  14. Not a good contract, for sure, but it should not have been the huge failure that it was.
  15. I mostly agree with this post, but if I'm not mistaken, we overpaid the next highest bid by $30 mil.
  16. Perhaps insufficient value is not the proper term. It's not that I thought these guys would stink, it's that I think we overpaid for them. That said, you and I are pretty much on the same page with this, doomsdayers that we are.
  17. There is rationale behind every move that Dombrowski made, I'll agree to that. We'll have to agree to disagree on Henry's change of heart regarding reeling in Dombrowski's aggressive trades.
  18. If the team is not in contention, I can understand moving a guy like Betts to replenish the farm. If the team is contending, as they should during this window, then IMO, it would not make any sense to move him. I understand that the luxury tax limits are not hard caps. Ownership can spend as much as they want, but they have shown that they do have a self-enforced limit, which is somewhere near the luxury tax amount. And rightly so. By spending that amount, they are throwing their weight around. Every fan has the right to expect them to spend more or to spend without limit if a need arises. I think it's an unreasonable expectation, but they have that right.
  19. We did need an upgrade from Shaw. I don't blame Dombrowski for moving on from him.
  20. I agree that this team should win. Can't blame Dombrowski if they don't.
  21. Sox and ERod for the win!
  22. Who has time to go out when there is baseball to be watched???!!!
  23. Whether they re-sign Miller or not is irrelevant. You do that trade any day of the week.
  24. It's all about perspective. I'll take a catcher standing up for his pitcher on my team any day of the weak. As far as having full catching gear on, it's a heat of the moment situation. What is Varitek supposed to do? Hold on a moment while I remove my gear? I'm not in his head, but I am willing to bet that the decision of whether to go after ARod or not did not come down to Varitek being 'protected' by his gear.
