  1. This type of deal is good for both sides. I am fully on board for giving Mookie something like this.
  2. Or maybe we didn't sign Encarnacion because we didn't need him?
  3. The Cards have been hot lately. They need to be cooled off.
  4. I agree about just making more hard contact versus home runs. I am guessing that his wrist is still injured, at that has led to some poor mechanics/timing. As I said before, I'm not a batting coach, but what you say about wagging the bat makes sense. I wonder why the hitting coaches don't correct this.
  5. Bogaerts is not having a good year defensively. He is 21st (out of 21 qualified players) in DRS at -11 and 16th in UZR/150 at -2.3.
  6. Workman deserves a shot. He has been quietly putting up some very good numbers.
  7. Kind of like batting order.
  8. I would tend to agree. He's a pretty good reliever and his K/W ratio is great. I think it's just trying to get acclimated to a new team and new catchers. At least I hope so. I think he'll be fine.
  9. He looked terrible in last night's game. He is striking out a lot recently.
  10. It's too bad that Pedroia is on the DL because Bogaerts really needs some time off, more than just 1-2 days.
  11. Absolutely. It's hard not to get pumped up about him, but we do need to temper our expectations. I posted elsewhere that the reaction Devers is getting is the exact same reaction that Beni received when he first came up and at the beginning of the year. A couple short months later, people were talking about trading or platooning him. Devers will be fine, as will Beni, but both will go through learning curves. Be excited, but be realistic, and have patience when the slumps come.
  12. I agree, this would be the right answer. I posted earlier that signing him to a 7-8 year deal would be good. I'd even be willing to to go a little higher in yearly salary for fewer years. It would still be a long term contract, but to me, it boils down to really being a 4 or 5 year deal. I can live with that. I'm not sure if Mookie would be willing to go that route, but the point of him getting another shot at a big payday is quite valid.
  13. Just watched the Devers HR again (since it was right after the Hanley at bat). That was a thing of beauty, in every way imaginable.
  14. OK, I just watched that at bat again. @ slasher - The first pitch called a strike was a borderline high strike, but IMO (and according to K zone) it was a strike. It was certainly close enough for the call to go either way. The 2nd pitch was almost in the exact same location, maybe a 1/2 inch higher, but again, close enough to be called a strike if Hanley hadn't swung. The third pitch was probably another 1/2 inch to inch higher, not a strike, but too close to take. @ Moon - After the 1st pitch, Hanley said something to Romine. After the strike out, Hanley mouthed something in Chapman's direction. I do not get the impression that Hanley had a defeatist attitude, but that he was tipping his cap to Chapman for beating him in that at bat, which sometimes you just have to do. But to me, the look also said, "I'll get you next time." And yes, I can infer all that from watching on a tv screen.
  15. I don't get the hate for Holt. He's a bench player that provides a lot of versatility.
  16. Yes, he has been. I'm not sold on him yet, but perhaps whatever mechanical tweak they did really is the difference.
  17. I really liked this move, but I have not been impressed with him yet either. Hopefully, it's just a very brief acclimation period.
  18. I have said many times that Hanley gets a bum rap, maybe because of his 'issues' when he was younger an immature. By all accounts, he has worked hard and has done whatever the team has asked him to do. No, he's not earning his contract right now, but that hardly makes him a sloth.
  19. As I said in another thread, Farrell gets full credit for Pomeranz.
  20. You are making a strawman argument. Just stop.
  21. Good point. A lot of times these 'implosions' happen quickly. You can't always have another guy warming up just in case, especially when the guy in the game is usually pretty good.
  22. Go figure. We need a thread here titled "Games Johnny Neuron Has Cost Us".
  23. Or maybe, the in game decisions of the manager don't make as big a difference as people think they do?
  24. I didn't say that Farrell specifically batted Bogaerts and Moreland in the 3rd and 4th slots to appease their comfort zone, just that it would make more sense to do that than to worry about all the minor tweaks. That's how little difference the tweaks make. FTR, I think there are some players who really prefer a specific slot, but most players really don't have a preference. Managers use 1000 different line ups every year, so that kind of supports that idea. I think for some players, ego/confidence plays a part. I'm not saying that I agree with Farrell's line ups, because I don't, but his batting orders are not the reason why we win or lose games.
  25. Two things I have agreed with in terms of a big contract to Betts: 1. If you're going to give a contract like that to anyone, Betts would be the guy. 2. Extending him now for 10 years would be far preferable to waiting until he hits FA and then giving him a 10 year deal. That said, as good of a gamble as he seems, we all thought that Price was as good of a gamble that you could have for a 30+ pitcher, and that didn't take long to turn in the wrong direction. (Yes, I realize that it could still work out.)
