I am not going to rag on Betts too much mostly because the underperformance of our offense does not lie solely with him. Too many of our guys are either underperforming their expectations or have underperformed for a good stretch of the season. There is plenty of offensive 'blame' to go around and Betts certainly deserves his as much as some of our other favorite whipping boys.

Pitchers do indeed pitch differently to a batter when he is 'protected' than when he's not. However, this does not result in any overall advantage to the 'protected' hitter. As far as pitchers pitching differently from the stretch, that is true as well, but our OBP has still been solid this year, so we're still facing a lot of pitchers out of the stretch. I am pretty sure that I already posted numbers that showed that Hanley is not seeing less fastballs this year than he did last year.

I agree completely with your signature. I never want the Yankees anywhere near the playoffs. The way I determine who I least want to face in the playoffs is to consider which team would it hurt the most to lose to. That's always the Yankees, so I always hope they get eliminated before we have to face them in the playoffs, even if they might be a lesser opponent on paper. OTOH, beating them would also bring the most joy over any other team, so there is that.

That would be the worst case scenario, but it would still be a mild win. Again, that's provided that we win our games as well. Trust me, I really hope and prefer that the Yankees get swept.

It probably won't initially be done on purpose. I'm thinking someone will 'piggy back' two pitchers out of necessity, like many teams have already done many times, and have such great success with it that they will continue to use it. Other managers will start leaning towards this type of tandem more and more often when one of their regular starters get injured. Then eventually, GMs will start signing these types of pitchers with that idea in mind.

I know that it would be a major hassle if your first floor got flooded, and I hope the water recedes before that happens, but the important thing is the safety of you and your family. I hope the best for you. Be safe.

I'm not sure that anyone has overrated his defense? At any rate, I think he might get more criticism than he deserves because of the fact that he's being compared with Bradley and Betts, to whom he will likely never measure up defensively.

I agree that Beni has made his share of mental mistakes. That said, I don't consider getting too close to the wall or misplaying balls off the wall due to unfamiliarity with it to be mental mistakes. IMO, he is still learning how to play the wall well, and he will get better with that over time. Maybe others naturally have a better feel for how to play the wall than he does, but that is not something I can blame Beni for.

This team is what it is, which is a pretty good team overall, despite the recent 4 game losing streak. Buck had the team fired and and ready to play, you say. Why hasn't Buck had his team fired up most of the rest of the season?

Betts is definitely having a bad year for him. He gets cut a lot more slack than most of our players, despite not performing up to expectations.

As to your first sentence, fair enough. I am not a Farrell basher, though I do believe that questioning the coaches about the mental errors, baserunning mistakes included, is valid. I know that mental lapses are going to happen, but there seems to be more than our fair share of them. I am not talking about the aggressive baserunning outs, which are often judgment calls. I have defended those over and over. I am talking about mistakes. I just thought it was odd that Farrell had two mental lapses of his own.

It's so easy to get caught up in the emotional roller coaster. Someone on here used the term 'recency bias', which is fitting. LOL We do have to remember that it's a long season and to try not to overreact to small samples. I absolutely hate that we just got swept by the Os, but these things happen in baseball all the time. The bright side is that we are still 2.5 games up on the Yanks after losing 4 in a row.

But we got a lot of hits too. They just didn't come at the right times. If you generate a lot of baserunners, the runs typically follow.

Yes, he really did. Fister, Reed, and Kimbrel all did their jobs. Our offense is so maddening sometimes.
