    Being wrong about whether they had the highest offer on the table does not mean the deal was botched. Breslow was not going to match the Cubs offer, regardless.

    Perhaps Bregman wanted to stay, but in order to do that, he has to be willing to negotiate. It doesn't sound like Bregman was willing to do that. It sounds like like the Sox had to match the Cubs offer or he was walking.

    Those people that are lining up to tell us what happened don't really know what happened either. They don't.

    How do we know what Breslow's line in the sand was? The line in the sand is not necessarily the first offer or even subsequent offers. Nor should it be. It takes two to tango. Bregman got a better offer, which he accepted. Breslow was not willing to go that high. That doesn't translate into "Breslow botched it."

    There has to be someone out there who can fill our needs. It probably won't be as big an impact bat as we'd like. It also probably won't be a Gold Glove defender. But there's someone out there who can provide a solid infield upgrade and depth and won't cost us a fortune. I have no clue who that is. I leave that up to the posters here who love to do that stuff, and do a good job of it. Personally, I wouldn't trade away our young pitching. I'm still really against trading Duran, Rafaela, or Abreu, but I understand that it might be the cost of acquiring some infield help.

    I honestly think I'm more concerned with shoring up the infield defense than I am with securing a big bat. Of course, I fully admit that the first time we lose a game 1-0 or 2-1, I will be criticizing the weak, pathetic offense.

    Hopefully, it doesn't come to that. I'm just mulling around some ideas in case no one else is acquired. I don't think that the worst case scenario of staying status quo with our infield is as bad an option as others think it is, until that inevitable injury occurs. To be clear, I really think that we need to add an infielder. I just don't think it spells doomsday if we don't.

    After signing Suarez and upgrading our pitching, I won't be extremely upset if we don't add a 2nd or 3rd baseman, but I agree that we really do need to add an infielder. That's the last piece to make this offseason complete, IMO. I'd be okay if we added a defensive oriented player over a big bat.

    There is so much more that goes on behind the scenes that we are not privy to. We need an inside source. We need a mole. LOL

    The player's ego certainly plays a large role in players going after the most money.

    That is not really my concern. The players in the top tier are making more than enough money. My concern is that by deferring some (or a lot) of the money, teams have more financial flexibility to spend in the present. They are, in a sense, cheating the system.

    I don't disagree that teams that spend more have an advantage, on average, over teams that spend less. I guess what I'm hoping for with the 'no deferrals' is that it would force the Dodgers to spend less if they're not able to shift that money around. I do think that there are teams that are not spending enough money on payroll. I don't think the Red Sox are one of those teams. And I think that the Dodgers have gone beyond overboard with their spending.

    I am still thinking that the Red Sox will add either a 2nd baseman or a 3rd baseman to take care of the infield situation. As I've said many times, we need some better infield depth, if nothing else. And, if nothing else, the Sox should at least acquire a LH 2B to platoon with Romy.

    I still get the sense that people turned on him, but fair enough. It would be nice if we could get a long-standing 2nd baseman. I thought that Vaughn Grissom was going to be it (not that I liked the Sale trade), but that didn't turn out well at all.

    Deferred money 1) lowers the AAV so that teams take less of a hit on the luxury tax, and 2) frees up current money for the team to spend on other players.

    They turned on him in the sense that people would now be quick to trade him, when at the start of last season, he was deemed our 2nd baseman for the foreseeable future.

    Also, I'm not sure why it is assumed that when the Red Sox fail to sign a player that the GM must have botched it. I'm sure that has happened, but I would assume that, more often than not, the deal did not happen because of reasons other than being botched.

    Breslow is not a buffoon. Calculated, yes. He may also be cold, but I think you have to have a degree of coldness in order to be a good GM. I would not make a good GM. I would have still had the entire 2004 teams playing for the Red Sox 10 years later.

    I agree that teams are spending more than they otherwise would, reluctantly, to keep up with the Joneses. The direction that free agent spending has taken is crazy. IMO, they need to disallow deferrals, at the very least. It does seem that teams may now be trending towards shorter length contracts with higher AAVs. That's a start, but even those contracts are outrageous. Bregman's $40M a year was crazy enough,

    Exactly.

    The schools in southeastern Virginia do the same thing. They cancel school because of the potential of inclement weather, then we typically end up getting rain. LOL Today and tomorrow are teacher workdays, so there was no need to cancel school this time around. BTW, snow days are not what they used to be! They actually don't cancel school anymore, but rather go with a virtual learning day.

    It makes sense that we'd want the best overall defensive alignment possible. It's very possible that Rafaela at 2B and Duran in CF would be a better overall alignment than the other way around. I would really, really hate to lose Rafaela's elite defense in CF, but playing him at 2B could be a solution to filling that position and dealing with our crowded outfield. With that being said, I'm not sure why Duran couldn't work his way to being a solid defender at 2B, I'm sure the Red Sox have a reason for not considering him there, but I'm not sure what it is.

    He would need to take reps there, for sure. I know it's been a while, but it's not like he hasn't played the position before. He's athletic enough. That said, I know that we need strong infield defense. I'm just curious as to why this has not been a consideration.
