Yes, I realize that this trade is not happening. Fortunately for your Mariners, they seem to be getting along fine without Cano. Since I made my post about Seattle not hanging with the Astros for the division, they fell back about 4 games, but have now won 7 in a row to get back to within .5 games. You can thank me later. That said, Seattle is still an incredible 9 games above their Pythagorean W-L.

I would agree. So, how is it that Price can handle the pressure of pitching from the pen, but not the pressure of starting? Rhetorical question, BTW.

It's interesting that Price was able to pitch so well out of the pen in the postseason. Does pitching out of the pen in a close game have less 'pressure' than starting?

I would not do that trade simply because of the PEDs issue. Beyond that, I still think that the Sox need the starting pitching more than they need the offense. So it's a no for me either way.

The statistics also show that out of the top 5 spots, the #3 spot is the fewest number of high impact at bats. A good bit of that is obviously due to the first inning.

Haha. I saw that tweet and got a little excited. I can't help myself. Batting order does not make that much of a difference, unless a manager is going to truly optimize his line up by bucking all tradition. The difference between JD batting 3rd versus batting 4th amounts to 2 runs, on average, over an entire season. I completely agree that batters should be placed where they feel most comfortable. If JD has expressed a preference to bat 3rd rather than 4th, than by all means, Cora should leave him there. All that said, I am a firm believer that your best hitter should not be batting 3rd, and I will continue to make that point. IMO, JD would be comfortable hitting in either spot, and over the long run, the team would be better off.

Fair enough. I will take you even one step farther, because that's just the kind of poster I am. With JD batting 3rd, the Sox have scored 5.26 runs per game. With JD batting 4th, the Sox have scored 5.19 runs per game. That amounts to a difference of 11.3 runs over the season.

I am all for pitching inside to back a player off of the plate if he looks too comfortable. I am all for a pitcher hitting a player in the backside to show he has his teammates' back, as when Kelly hit Austin. I am not for hitting a player because he has owned your team. If the pitcher doesn't like it, he needs to make better pitches. That said, if a player does get thrown at for taking the pitcher deep, or whatever, then retaliation is, by all means, necessary. -

Our catchers are fine. More than fine. Even when they weren't hitting, the position of catcher was not a concern.
