  1. We need Sale to be an ace and a stopper tonight. I have confidence in our offense to come through. Let's do this!
  2. 1. Mookie Betts ® RF 2. Andrew Benintendi (L) LF 3. J.D. Martinez ® DH 4. Mitch Moreland (L) 1B 5. Xander Bogaerts ® SS 6. Rafael Devers (L) 3B 7. Eduardo Nunez ® 2B 8. Sandy Leon (S) C 9. Jackie Bradley Jr. (L) CF
  3. He has been a little disappointing because he has not been the ace that we thought we were getting, but I agree with you that he has not been a bust. He has been very good, outside of a couple of starts and outside of the DL time.
  4. Solid post Oldtimer. I was completely on board with Pedroia's extension. I thought it was a very good deal for both sides at the time that it occurred. I still expect Pedroia to come back and contribute, but even if he does, he has lost a lot of time to injury already. If he doesn't, then that's just more dead money that the Sox have to deal with. Of course we all want Mookie to remain with the Sox. I just can't fathom giving him or any player an insane contract.
  5. You do the best you can at retaining him, hopefully before he reaches free agency. But, it takes two to tango. If Mookie is not willing to sign for a slightly shorter term, then yes, you have to let him walk. I have said before that I prefer to give a higher dollar amount per year if that allows us to sign for fewer years. That's the route I would go.
  6. Making solid contact and hitting the ball hard is what you want to do. Whether the ball finds a hole or not is mostly random luck. Yes, he strikes out more than we'd like, but as far as the balls that he does make contact with, you really can't ask for him to do much more.
  7. I thought the $1.5 mil would give us a little more wiggle room. A couple of things that Dombrowski has stated recently: 1. While the team would prefer to stay under the $237 threshold, they will go over if necessary. Not that I believe that for a second. 2. Dombrowski is hopeful that pen reinforcements can come from within. In particular, from Thornburg and Pom. Maybe that's just posturing, or maybe he really doesn't feel the need to add a reliever. I can see Dombrowski doing #2 or #3 on your list. I really can't see the Sox going over the max.
  8. Of course. That was just my failed attempt at being funny.
  9. That would explain a lot. He is very Buch-like.
  10. I'm with you on all that Max. CC pitched very well last night. It still should not happen.
  11. That is true. Our guys can't bunt worth a darn. But maybe the attempt at it rattles CC enough to throw him off his game.
  12. I was reading this morning about ERod's use of his changeup last night, or lack thereof. Statcast credited ERod with just 2 changeups in 84 pitches, while Brooks credited him with just 7 changeups in 95 pitches. There's a little discrepancy there, but there also seems to be a little confusion on whether some of his changeups were classified as two seamers. The real issue seems to be not in what type of pitch the pitch was classified as, but in the lack of speed differential between his supposed changeup and his fastball. His changeups were being clocked at 89-90 mph, resulting in very few bad swings and misses, according to Cora. So, something is going on there with his changeup.
  13. Absolutely bunt against him. Just to piss him off.
  14. OTOH, Kemp is having a pretty good year this year...
  15. From what I've read, Toronto is paying $1.5 mil of Pearce's remaining salary (roughly half?). It sounds like that would leave us enough money to get a decent reliever.
  16. You have to develop the Pedros and Mannys. Yes, I'm aware of our struggles with developing starting pitching, but that should be an area of focus. Or, if you can't develop the Pedros, you still build a strong farm and trade for them, similar to how we traded for Sale. Yes, I know I criticized Dombrowski for trading away all of our prospects, but that has more to do with the magnitude of what he traded away in such a short time than with any one particular trade. The point is, it starts with a strong farm system. You fill in the holes with the Mitch Moreland types and avoid the long term contracts for the most part.
  17. Honestly, I am not concerned with whatever moves the Astros and the Yankees make. I am good with the team that we have, and I think they can compete with the best of them. The only concerns I would have is if we start getting a lot of injuries.
  18. You really ought to post more often sk. Your posts are must read.
  19. You are right, of course. It just really ticks me off that CC can shut our line up down the way he did. That should not happen.
  20. I'm sorry that you're having to deal with this. I can't imagine that it's ever an easy decision on how best to care for aging and ailing parents or grandparents. My best to you and your family.
  21. What? You'll have to refresh my memory on that. I have always been 100% on board with this offense, even before we signed Martinez.
  22. I could live with that.
  23. My point is that you sign the Mitch Moreland types to fill in the holes that are not filled by your home grown players, not that you try to make the Mitch Moreland types be the face of the franchise. I agree that Mookie is special. He is still not worth 10 years beyond his remaining arb years. Go the extra mile - give him 6 years.
  24. The good news for us is that even if we get swept, we'll only be 2 games back. I don't see a sweep happening either way. Hopefully, we take the series. WIN!!!
