I know I was very optimistic about Pedroia returning, but it doesn't appear that we'll see him again this year. As far as signing a 2B for next year, I think it would be kind of difficult to sign a full time 2B unless they know for sure that Pedroia won't be returning. Having guys like Holt and Nunez are perfect complements to Pedroia. That said, I think Dombrowski has to plan for possibly needing to acquire a 2B midseason next year.

Dombrowski will do his best to retain Kimbrel, I have no doubt. At the same time, he is looking for closer type relievers who are signed past this season, as a possible replacement for Kimbrel. I think that Dombrowski also has the sense that Kimbrel will be too expensive.

Actually, I probably give the largest credit to health/regression, but I think Cora is a large part of that. And my credit to Cora has to do with off field management, not in game strategy. -

I would like to point out the importance of punctuation in that sentence. Take out the comma, and the sentence takes on the exact opposite meaning. Yes, we all need baseball to return.

It's often (usually) very difficult and unfair to attribute a player's performance or results to the manager. Ultimately, regardless of what Cora decides, the player has to execute. If he doesn't, that's not Cora's fault. I understand that part of the manager's job is to put the right player into any given situation. I trust Cora's judgment in that regard. -
Of course Henry can afford it, but that doesn't mean that it's something that he's readily willing to do. Besides the higher penalties, etc., going so far over could make it more difficult to be able to reset the penalty in a couple of years, which, in turn, will result in even stiffer penalties.

Phillips may amount to nothing, but there's always the chance that he could play well enough to earn most of the starts at 2B, allowing Holt to return to more of a super utility role. I'm kind of excited to see what Phillips has to offer. If he stinks, nothing lost.

The old adage about never having enough pitching is the absolute truth. My thinking is that you always stockpile as many arms as you reasonably can, even if it doesn't seem like they'll be needed or that they'll make any positive contribution to the team. You just never know. And really, what's the harm in doing that?

As I have said before, I would not go over the luxury tax limit for what will likely be only a marginal upgrade. Our team, even with the pitching injuries, is fine. More than fine, they're pretty doggone good! There's a good chance that Dombrowski will come up with something creative that none of us have thought of. There's a good chance that he will just add a strong pen arm. I'm good with that.

I will not deny that I'm a wimp. Not only do I start my day off with coffee, but it's coffee with flavored cream. Today's flavor, white chocolate raspberry. Good stuff.

You never know what you're going to get out of relievers. We could re-sign Kimbrel for to a 4-5 year contract, and our pen could still turn into the Guardians 2018 pen. Look at the aforementioned Guardians pen. They were second best in baseball in 2017. They are the 3rd worst this year. Three of their biggest arms from last year, Miller, Cody, and Shaw just fell of the cliff this year. A huge contract to Kimbrel is just not worth the resources when a very effective closer can be found for much cheaper.

The Dodgers are still trying to stay under the luxury cap, so they will need some salary relief in one form or another. I'm guessing that is a reason why they're willing to part with a top prospect.

I always got the impression that Bogaerts looked at the move to 3rd as a 'demotion', that he was being taken off of the premier infield position.
