  1. Sounds reasonable to me.
  2. Of course it is a combination of factors. The only thing I'm arguing about is whether Cora or JD had more influence.
  3. Personally, I think the majority of the improvement in the other batters would have been there even without JD. Between Cora encouraging a more aggressive approach, recovery from injury, and good old plain regression, the improvement really shouldn't be a surprise.
  4. Cora absolutely set the tone. Every guy in our line up has seen an increase this year over last year in his 'in zone swing' percentage, which means they are swinging at more strikes.
  5. I'm with you. There are much less expensive options for a closer who will give you almost the same production as Kimbrel. I don't know whether Buttrey or Feltman are the answer, but someone other than an expensive Kimbrel certainly is.
  6. LOL Right, as usual.
  7. JD, with agent Boras by his side, more or less stated that he would be opting out after 2019, which is no surprise to anyone. He and Boras both said that they were open to renegotiating the contract to eliminate the opt outs. If the Sox are planning on keeping JD past 2019, then renegotiating this offseason would be the smart thing to do. That said, Dombrowski cannot go crazy on a new contract. One of the reasons why the JD acquisition is so great was because of the reasonable contract. I would offer a higher AAV, but keep the # of years down.
  8. That is crazy do think that a team with 100+ wins could be a wildcard team, especially coupled with how few games the AL Central leader may win. I think the AL race is going to come down to that final series in September. There will be no letting up.
  9. That could be, but I can't see a game changer type starter coming through the door. I don't see the Sox acquiring any starter that would be good enough to supplant Sale, Porcello, or Price as the top 3. It seems like if we do get a starter, it will be James Shields type, although they don't call him Big Game James for nothing. LOL
  10. Line ups, for anyone who cares: 1. Mookie Betts, RF, Red Sox 2. Jose Altuve, 2B, Astros 3. Mike Trout, CF, Angels 4. J.D. Martinez, DH, Red Sox 5.Jose Ramirez, 3B, Guardians 6. Nolan Arenado, 3B, Rockies 3. Paul Goldschmidt, DH, D-backs 4. Freddie Freeman, 1B, Braves 5. Matt Kemp, LF, Dodgers 6. Bryce Harper, CF, Nationals 7. Nick Markakis, RF, Braves 8. Brandon Crawford, SS, Giants 9. Willson Contreras, C, Cubs Max Scherzer, P, Nationals
  11. Not chicks. The saying needs to be changed to "Dudes dig the long ball."
  12. I missed the celebrity softball game this year, but I very much enjoy watching it.
  13. I don't live in the Boston area either. What I hear is coming from the game feeds.
  14. LOL Hitch FTR, I like having you in my posse. You tell it like it is. I'm not going to waste my time defending myself against these guys.
  15. I have no doubt that Dombrowski will do something to upgrade our team before the deadline. Exactly what he will do is anybody's guess. But, I bet we will all be pleasantly surprised with the acquisition(s). After thinking about this a little more, I'd be okay if Dombrowski just added a reliever or two. I think our team is good enough to go with what we have. That is, provided we don't sustain any more injuries.
  16. I understand that. But either way, nothing is guaranteed, which is the the issue I have with the whole "win now at any cost" philosophy. If we were able to miraculously get deGrom, Britton, and Scooter, we're still not even guaranteed to win the division, much less the WS. I don't think it would be worth the further sacrifice to our future for what would likely be a marginal upgrade to this year's team.
  17. Nope, but you have my permission to give a good old "I told you so!!!"
  18. JD has most definitely helped in that sense. That said, do you think that the other players would not have improved this year without JD's help?
  19. That goes for GMs building a team too, no? A team is either good or bad. Baseball can be LOL random so the results don't render the team bad or good. It's the team in and of itself that makes it good or bad.
  20. Go get him Dave!
  21. I didn't say that the team should stand pat. Dombrowski will need to get creative in finding upgrades that won't push us over the limit. I don't know what the answer is. All I'm saying is that I would not go over the luxury tax limit, especially for a marginal upgrade. The team is 99.9% going to make the playoffs even if they stand pat. Going all in to add another starter guarantees nothing in the postseason.
  22. Good read - thanks for posting. I don't watch enough of the As or the Ms, so I appreciate what Sullivan has to say. I happened to watch the end of the game that Sullivan referenced in his opening paragraph. That was another one of those moments that make baseball so great.
  23. It seems that the only stats that you consider valid are the ones that agree with your opinion.
