  1. Exactly. Of course, winning the series or sweeping them would be better, but if we split, we maintain our lead and knock another 4 games off the schedule.
  2. We tend to agree on quite a lot. Anything that's not advanced stat related.
  3. Good question. I don't know. On a related note, I just read this: Nationals GM Mike Rizzo confirmed Wednesday morning that Shawn Kelley was designated for assignment for being "disrespectful to the organization." Kelley slammed his glove down in frustration and stared into the Nationals' dugout after giving up a three-run homer in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 25-4 blowout win over the Mets. The 34-year-old right-hander apparently had a problem with being brought into such a lopsided game. "You’re either in or you’re in the way," said Rizzo. "He was in the way." Kelley posted a 3.34 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 32/5 K/BB ratio in 32 1/3 total innings this season with Washington and should quickly find a new place to pitch. Two things about this: 1. That kind of supports the clubhouse issue thing. 2. Is this someone the Sox might be interested in picking up? I don't know much about him, but he wouldn't cost anything.
  4. With Johnson now in the rotation along with Pom (depending on the length of Sale's DL), I really like Velazquez in the pen. If not for the need for someone who can give us multiple innings, I would agree.
  5. Pretty much. I always like to have the depth, and I would have liked to see what Phillips could do, but with the acquisition of Kinsler I think it becomes moot. On a side note, has anyone noticed the increased use of the word 'meh' since Soxhop's rant about it? LOL
  6. Correct. Bigger impact. The greater expense, in terms of dollars, doesn't mean that much if you're going over anyway.
  7. Let me preface what I'm going to say with the fact that I don't know what other moves Dombrowski tried to make that just didn't work out. I also don't know which players might have been available. 1. If we are over the highest tax limit anyway, why not make other moves (where we take on salary for the remainder of the year rather than give up prospects) that might have a greater impact? Beltre comes to mind. Relief pitchers? A #2/3 starting pitcher? 2. I don't know how far over we are, but I don't think it makes any sense to go over the highest tax limit for someone like Kinsler. That is nothing against Kinsler, and he does improve our team, but is he worth going over the next limit for? Not in my opinion. I was fine with the team the way it was before any trades were made. As much as I like the players that Dombrowski acquired, I would have rather not gotten them and stayed under the threshold.
  8. Today is the day that both Lind and Phillips can opt out of their minor league deals if they choose. I have not heard anything about either's decision yet.
  9. Dombrowski said that once Devers returns, they will go with a 12 man pitching staff. The question is, who gets the boot out of the bullpen?
  10. Something I read this morning: Tony Massarotti ‏Verified account @TonyMassarotti 2h2 hours ago Red Sox vs playoff contenders on their schedule - NYY, Sea, Oak, Hou, Phi and Atl: 15-16, .484 pct, +9 run diff. Red Sox vs all else: 60-18, .769 pct, +167 run diff. They have not played Cleveland yet. Take from that what you will. IMO, it means we have the other playoff contenders right where we want them.
  11. LOL The Yankees have Gardner. 'Nuff said.
  12. Uh oh. Do we have a Pablo Junior on our hands?
  13. Our bullpen is solid, and may be even better with the emergence of Thornburg and Brasier. That said, I am surprised that we didn't get a reliever before the deadline. Not that I think we needed one, but I was sure Dombrowski would pick up a quality reliever.
  14. I've been reading that there is a lot of trouble in the Nats' clubhouse. Obviously, you have to take these things with a grain of salt, so who knows what's really going on? Didn't they just fire Baker last year after a fairly successful season because of clubhouse problems?
  15. Unless the WS is guaranteed, there is no way I would ever do that.
  16. It's not just a simple matter of who is having a better season this year. There are several other factors to consider in terms of which move would have been better.
  17. The penalties for one year, even at the highest level, aren't too bad, (though let me be on record as saying that I'm not happy that we went over the limit without going bigger). However, when you start getting into consecutive years of being over the tax limits, the penalties become steeper and steeper, which I know you are aware of. Sure, Henry can afford to sign JDM and our young core to long term contracts. Will he be able to do so and also reset the tax penalty at some point in the next 2 years ?
  18. I think our hitters were pacing themselves for this upcoming series. Yankees fans, prepare to be bludgeoned!
  19. Sunday night games are the worst, not only because of the time, but mostly because of the nauseating announcing team. I have my fingers crossed for Price. Pitching against the Yankees does seem to be in his head, something he needs to overcome.
  20. I am a huge Vazquez fan. He has had a down year defensively by his standards, but I would hate to see the Sox trade him.
  21. I agree. The only thing I am hesitant to do is to play him at other positions while Vaz is still on the DL. That is too risky in terms of injury.
  22. That's kind of a catch-22, no? You can't really show that you are deserving of more playing time unless you get some consistent playing time. I do agree with the jerking him around thing. He is not going to be able to develop properly as a catcher if he is trying to learn several other positions at the same time. That said, if the Sox are not planning on making him a primary catcher, then I would like to see him get reps at other positions. I think he could be a real asset to the team in a super utility role and 3rd catcher.
  23. Once upon a time, Swihart was projected to be the better overall catcher between him and Vazquez. He was never projected to be as good as Vaz defensively, but throw in his projected offense with his above average defense and he was supposed to be better. It is far too early to anoint Swihart our starting catcher, but he has looked pretty good out so far. I am at the point where I would like to see him catch some more games, maybe 30-40% of the time. Not only would it benefit Swihart, but it would benefit Leon as well. And that's coming from someone who is really high on Leon's and Vaz' defense, and defensively oriented catchers overall.
  24. LOL That's what I'm saying. The best against the best with no excuses. Not that I'm agreeing that the Yankees will take the series because I'm not, but wouldn't it be ironic if the only game we won is the one that Sale was supposed to pitch?
