    Also, when Ben re-signed Koji for 2 yrs/$18 mil, I thought that was too much. I was thrilled to have Koji back, as I would be thrilled to have Kimbrel back, but that doesn't mean I won't think it's an overpay.

    Because we will need those pennies to pay for other players. A closer that's good enough to get the team to the post season will be good enough to pitch in Game 7. Stating that a closer besides Kimbrel has such a greater likelihood to blow Game 7 than Kimbrel does is faulty.

    Nobody is saying to go out and get a so-so closer. I'm saying that great closers can be acquired for much cheaper than what we got Kimbrel for.

    I agree that identifying those guys is tricky. But they are out there. You all need not worry. Dombrowski will overpay for whoever our next closer is.

    Because August waivers are revocable, most teams will put most players on waivers to gauge interest if nothing else. Who is placed on waivers really doesn't mean anything.

    Not according to run expectancy. It certainly would have been a less questionable move, but I can't call it a no brainer. I can't recall the exact numbers, but I remember reading something to the point that the batter behind the one being intentionally walked has to be a significantly weaker hitter to make the IBB worthwhile. I guess some people would consider JBJ significantly weaker than Beni.

    I would have to go back and watch the play again, but it seems like the 2nd baseman could have dove for the ball and perhaps kept the run from scoring. I know that Jerry and Eck were all over Torres for a similar play in an earlier game.

    Per Fangraphs, the Yankees' chance of winning the division is down to 8.8%, despite having the 2nd easiest remaining schedule. The scary news for them is that they still have to play Baltimore 7 more times.

    Well, the stats don't take into account the injury risks to the players.

    There is some subjectivity built into every stat. I have often used strikeouts as an example. It's probably one of the most, if not the most, subjective stat there is. Just consider all of the complaints there have been in the game threads regarding the strike zone. Yet people don't seem to have any problem with trusting the reliability of strike outs, or walks for that matter. However, when it comes to UZR, the thought by many is that it can't be trusted because it's subjective. Why is that?

    As much as I believe the Sox need to give Pom this start, I hope that Cora has him on a short leash and is not willing to sacrifice this game just because of our big lead in the division. Hopefully, Pom gives us a good outing. Keep the good times rolling! WIN!!!

    IMO, those other teams are overpaying for their closers as well. That's just me. I'm not spending a ton of money on a bullpen, which is not to say that I don't think they're important.

    I've read a lot of criticism about Boone's decision not to walk Beni to get to JBJ. Intentionally walking a batter, like sac bunting, is almost never a good idea. I wouldn't have done it if it were my call. Once again, just because a decision doesn't work out, it doesn't mean that it was the wrong call.

    I think there's a very good possibility of seeing some restrictions placed on shifting. Manfred is very much opposed to the current shifting. In general, people seem to think that more offense is better for baseball.

    I read a recent article where several players stated that they are usually pitched to the shift, so going the other way is much easier said than done. They also brought up the point that getting players to hit weak singles or bunt against the shift is exactly what the other team is trying to get these guys to do. So, if a hitter allows himself to be taken out of his game, the defense has essentially 'won'.

    Stick with me S5. I won't steer you wrong. I remember clearly that my very first post ever was a post about BABIP to the poster 30 Something, aka Valentine. The man was literally a genius. I miss him.

    IMO, the contract by itself was an overpay, not in terms of what Fangraphs says, but I truly believe that you can get almost the same production out of a closer at a much cheaper rate.
