  1. I trust Cora to figure it out. Come the playoffs, I think we will see a pen that looks a lot more effective.
  2. I think bringing Wright into a game for 2 innings of middle relief could really help our late inning relievers.
  3. We have already surpassed last year's win total by 4 games, and we have 19 games remaining. I'm good.
  4. I really like the idea of having Swihart as our 3rd catcher utility player. That allows Cora to start Leon/Vaz behind the plate, where they are stronger than Swihart, but then to pinch hit for them in key situations, without the concern of not having a catcher in case of injury.
  5. That's a fair incentive for Sale, but I'm sure that he would still much rather have the WS ring over the Cy Young award.
  6. I am the self-proclaimed, sanest person on this forum, and I completely agree. Go Sox!!!
  7. Batting 3rd: .318/.383/.594/.977 Batting 4th: .344/.421/.667/1.088 I am a firm believer that JD should be batting 4th, or more to the point, JD should NOT be batting 3rd, not because of his numbers, but because his potential to create runs is lessened from the #3 hole.
  8. LOL Love it.
  9. Since 2015, Iggy has averaged 1.975 WAR per year. That puts him on the borderline between 'role player' and 'solid starter'. Xander has averaged 4.25 WAR per year. That puts him in the 'All Star' category. I'm not going to argue semantics with you about whether that is 'vastly superior' or not, but I can tell you that I have not missed Iggy one bit, even with the issues that we've been having at 3B. And this is coming from someone who values defense as much as you do.
  10. It probably will affect his Cy Young chances. That said, if Sale puts his Cy chances ahead of the team's WS chances, that is not a guy that I would want on my team.
  11. Yup. That one hit would have changed the entire complexion of this series. Bogaerts hit a couple of long balls in the series, but both were solo shots. Imagine if he would have hit one of those with the bases loaded instead of with the bases empty.
  12. I agree that Houston is the better overall team, but only by a slight amount. They outhit us 10-8 in the first game, and 11-10 in the second game. That's not a big difference. They probably won more due to the timing of their hits than anything else, or more accurately, the lack of timely hits for the Red Sox. That is another one of those random things. Don't sell our team short.
  13. Jacko, in the words of the cute little girl in the viral YouTube video, "You worry about yourself." Your "shortening the game to 3 innings" pen seems to be having some issues of its own.
  14. I didn't think it was a dire need, but I would have preferred an 8th inning reliever over acquiring a 2B. Not that I don't like Kinsler, I just thought that our top priority should have been a pen arm. That said, I still believe our pen will be fine. Having ERod, Wright, Price, and Sale all missing starts in August/September has forced Cora to use his pen in a way that has been dictated by necessity more than by his plan. It's hard to cover so many games with 4+ innings from the pen. Also, he is not managing with the urgency that he will be in the postseason.
  15. You may also recall that we lost the first two in Houston, after which the sky was falling. But then our boys went on to win the final two games of the series, which was no small feat.
  16. He said that if we were in the postseason, he'd be pitching.
  17. I am not saying it's a phantom DL stint. There was some soreness or discomfort there. I don't think it's much different than what a lot of pitchers probably experience this late in the season. Given Sale's struggles in September and October last year, along with the comfortable lead the Sox have, they are taking whatever time they need to get Sale the extra rest and to get him 100% for the postseason. If we were in a must win situation, I believe Sale would be pitching through it.
  18. The Astros are no pushovers. That said, neither are the Red Sox. Despite the outcome, both games were very winnable. We had base runners all over the place. They made some great defensive plays against us. It happens. Even though Eovaldi has not pitched well recently, I think a case can be made to have him starting a game against both the Astros and the Yankees over the lefty ERod.
  19. There is a very good possibility that we'll get that chance. I'm just hoping that Oakland can pass the Yankees for HFA in the wildcard game, just to force the Yankees to make that west coast trip.
  20. I prefer great defense over great offense at shortstop, but you have to go with the overall better player. That is my feeling with catcher as well. I'm a big Leon/Vaz fan, but if Swihart ends up being a better overall catcher, then you have to be willing to sacrifice some defense behind the plate as well.
  21. I don't think the FO is going to give up on him as quickly as some fans have. Unless they are given an offer for him that they can't refuse, Devers will be here for a long time.
  22. Merloni, who is usually spot on, made a good point about how many of Devers' errors are mental, not physical. That is something that is most likely a product of his very young age and his lack of defensive grooming in the minors. In other words, he will (or should) grow out of that. As I've said many times, he requires patience. Devers is our long term 3B. Whether he is our 3B for the postseason remains to be seen.
  23. I'm not sure where you're getting a 5 WAR difference over a 5 year period. At any rate, Iggy did not even play in 2014, so perhaps looking at the a 4 year period, or even a 3 year period might make more sense. From 2015 to 2018, Iggy has been worth 7.9 fWAR. Over the same period, Bogaerts has been worth 17 fWAR. That's an average of 2.275 WAR per year. Note: Even going back 5 years, Bogey is an average of 1.84 WAR per year better than Iggy.
  24. How do you like the Sox 97-46 record?
  25. Both games so far have been pretty evenly played, IMO, despite the 0-2 outcome for the Sox. One timely hit each game or a bit of good luck and the outcome could easily be 2-0.
