  1. As I just posted, I'm not expecting to sustain oodles of stars in the farm system or to maintain a top 5 farm system year in and year out. But, I also don't think that a GM has to decimate a farm to the extent that Dombrowski did. This team was, for the most part, a championship caliber team before Dombrowski made his first move. Sign a David Price now and then. That's fine. Then make the under the radar type moves to fill in the rest of the holes.
  2. Building a championship does not have to decimate the farm system. I'm not suggesting that a team will have the #1 farm system year in and year out, while at the same time being able to put together a championship team, but there is certainly a middle road where there's a balance between the short term goals and the long term goals. Start by not giving up as much as we did for Kimbrel, not to mention paying him a hefty salary on top of that. I don't think it's unreasonable to think a team can have a revolving door of prospects to fill the needs of the team as other players leave.
  3. I think you give too much credit to JD. Not trying to take anything away from him, but IMO, Betts deserves more credit on his own. IMO, he was headed for this type of season with or without JD.
  4. I think it's fairly close in terms of which player had more of an impact, but I do agree with you that MVP should not be determined by who the WAR leader is.
  5. JD was hurt by being primarily a DH. As you said, he would not likely have won it anyway, but it would have been nice to see him get the recognition. IMO, 'most valuable' does not necessarily mean the best. This award should not be judged by WAR alone, and I say that as a fan of WAR.
  6. I am really hoping that the predictions for those two are way out of line. You'd think that the GMs would be wising up...
  7. I am not a fan of the offseason anyway. All of the speculation and rumors flying around drives me crazy. Wake me up on Opening Day, and tell me who's on the team. LOL
  8. IMO, that is too long for Eovaldo. I was thinking 3yrs/$45. I'd be willing to go a little higher on the AAV.
  9. Plus, what about all the trips through the lineup before that error where they could have taken the lead?
  10. Best prepared for the playoffs, I can agree with.
  11. That is just absurd. It has to stop somewhere.
  12. The 2019 team will be more or less the same as the 2018 team. Some tweaks, but nothing major. I won't say that we'll win 100 games again, but I would be highly surprised if we're not back in the playoffs.
  13. Whether a team wins or loses a series, it is really kind of unfair for anyone (I'm not saying you) to blame a single player or error for losing a game, much less a series. There are far too many plays in a game to say that the outcome of the game hinged on one play. Sure, had Kinsler not made that error the Sox might have won that game. But the Sox might have also won that game if any of 1000 other things happened differently during the game.
  14. For comparison purposes, The Fielding Bible Awards (my bible for defensive awards) gave Mookie unanimous first place votes. JBJ had the 2nd highest vote total for center fielders in the AL behind Kevin Kiermaier, who was better than JBJ in the metrics, but may not have qualified for the Gold Gloves (in the eyes of the voters) due to fewer innings. Kinsler had the 2nd highest vote total for 2B in the AL behind Rougned Odor by one point.
  15. Congrats to Mookie, JBJ, and Kinsler. In terms of UZR/150, all 3 of those guys were the AL leaders at their respective positions.
  16. The Gold Gloves added a sabermetric component to its voting about 5 years ago. Since then, the Gold Gloves have genuinely been much better. I will say it again. If you want to get the awards right, let the stat geeks do the voting.
  17. It is possible to build a championship team without decimating the farm system.
  18. The more Jacko raves on and on about the Yankees, the better I feel. It's like he has a lock on reverse mojo.
  19. I don't even know how to reply to that.
  20. Both.
  21. Just because a team is good doesn't mean that they can't be lucky as well. The Red Sox were indeed a great team. They were also lucky to some extent. That's not to take anything away from how great they were. Any team that wins the World Series needs some good fortune to swing their way. IMO, the Sox were not clearly the best team. They were the team with the best record, but not necessarily the best team. IMO, the Astros were the best team this season. We outplayed them in the playoffs, and took advantage of whatever good breaks we had.
  22. I don't know anything about boxing, but I don't think any other sport is as random as baseball.
  23. Not necessarily. One differing bounce can change the outcome of a game, which in turn can change the outcome of an entire series. And it isn't limited to just bounces. One example: 2004 ALCS, my memory fails me as to who was at bat and the exact inning, but a ground rule double hit by a Yankee player kept a runner who was on first base from scoring. Had the ball stayed in play, the run would have scored easily. If I'm not mistaken, the game would have been over, and the Red Sox would have been done.
  24. It's amazing to think he started this season as a big unknown health-wise. I'm not sure if the elbow will be an issue going forward or not, but Price delivered what he came here to deliver. He is my WS MVP, no disrespect to Pearce.
  25. Looking at the World Series Champs beginning in 2000: 19 Championships The AL won 10, the NL won 9. The team with the best record from the regular season won 5 times, or 26.3%. (2007 Sox, 2009 Yanks, 2013 Sox, 2016 Cubs, 2018 Sox) The team with the worst record from the regular season won 4 times, or 21.1%. (2000 Yanks, 2006 Cards, 2011 Cards, 2014 Giants)
