I do vaguely remember that, I just don't remember the specifics of how good he was. I always thought of Byrnes as a spaz, for lack of a better term, which is why I liked him as a player. (I apologize if anyone is offended by that term.) Pat Neshek is another one who falls in that category.

I don't disagree with any of this sk. I'm not looking for Pearce or any player to be lowballed or disrespected. The Sox will have to be in the same ballpark.

So it is possible to build a WS contender (or even champion), without decimating the farm. LOL about Baltimore and KC.

I'm not sure that I agree, but I can understand your view on this more than with the DH. With the DH, it's not necessarily the player being shielded from anything, but rather that the DH is a position that needs to be filled by someone.

My feeling is that these guys have enough money that they should be able to comfortably leave some money on the table. In other words, it shouldn't have to be all about the money. As I posted earlier, it probably has more to do with ego with a lot of the players than it does with the actual extra money.

I would not penalize him if his production against righties was good enough to beat the production of other players with more balanced splits.

I don't think pitchers should be handicapped either.

To the extent that I think the DH should have better offensive numbers than the rest of the competition. Betts and Trout were both better offensively than JD was, and they played defense on top of it. But if those two were not in the picture, I think my vote would be for JD, even though he's 10th in WAR.

I think Machado signs with the Yankees. And my feeling is, thank goodness neither will sign with the Sox.

I wasn't trying to imply that you said it was all about WAR. We agree that WAR is a very good starting point. I am a believer and a defender of WAR. I am not arguing that Mookie doesn't deserve the MVP. My point is that with JD, looking at just WAR doesn't do him his proper justice.

Agreed. That said, I often wonder what someone can do with $150 million that they can't do with $120 million. I understand the $30 million is a lot of money, but is it really that significant when you're already making that much? Is it worth uprooting your family from a home that they love, playing for a team that doesn't really have a shot at the playoffs, sacrificing your personal happiness and comfort, etc.? I think much of the going after the most money has to do with ego more so than actually needing the money.

My understanding is that ARod is actually quite good as an analyst. There is no doubt that he loves the game and knows it very well. I am just so turned off by him that I can't listen to him.

That's a fair point about the AGon trade being a sexy move as well. As I said, sometimes the sexy moves and the baseball moves are one and the same. I thought trading for AGon was a good baseball move regardless of whether it was sexy or not. Truth be told, I liked the Crawford addition. I did not like the contract, but I thought he would be a good player for us. Though at that time, I still believed in 'line up protection'. LOL That said, I also have some suspicions that signing Crawford was done in part to keep him away from the Yankees. Signing Price was also a sexy move, though it was a good baseball move too. I think that move was more baseball oriented than sexy oriented, despite the contract.
