Henry is indeed shutting the door on spending money. He will be looking to reset the tax penalty, likely next year. Otherwise, we would have probably already signed our closer, and it may have even been Kimbrel with his 4 year deal.

I posted back before the offseason even started that re-signing Eovaldi was a much higher priority than re-signing Kimbrel. My opinion on that has not changed.

I agree that Dombrowski will get someone to close and that it won't be a no name. I can't see Eovaldi being our closer unless that is dictated by health reasons.

I think your concern comes from equating 'economizing' with lack of quality. I am not suggesting that.

The point is that you do not have to spend big to have sign the Kimbrels of the world to 4+ year contracts in order to have a great bullpen. These are not necessarily basement bargains either, they are just mostly unknown. Sign or trade for them cheap, then let them be the next Kimbrel for several years at a fraction of the cost.

IMO, run differential and Pythagorean W-L are better ways than actual W-L record to gauge how good a team is. There is too much luck and randomness in baseball not to consider these things. I can dispute the Boston was the best team in the end, but I won't.

The point is, don't give out these big contracts. And I say that as someone who was a big fan of the Pedroia contract.

As long as the players are producing, those big contracts are fine. Inevitably, they turn into albatross contracts though. It's hard for any team to eat that kind of money. We are fortunate that Henry is willing to do so. Regardless of whether the Red Sox can afford it or not, I just don't like that way of building a team. When I become the first female GM of the Red Sox, I'm going with a mostly home-grown team that's supplemented with short contract, 2nd tier players. I'll build a dynasty. Look out baseball!

I don't think it's necessarily been a long time. Not if he's looking for the right team or the right situation to get into. You may be right that he doesn't want to be a GM again.

I know it doesn't mean a whole lot, but as I've posted before, the Red Sox are the current projected leaders in fWAR. On paper, we currently have the best team, even with no additions to the BP.

Good point about the team largely being cost controlled. We were in a similar situation when we signed Price. Not that I was a fan of the contract, but having the young talent surrounding him allowed that contract to happen. Not that I'm ever a fan of paying big bucks for relievers, I'm even more against it given the salaries we will have to pay next year if we want to keep some of our players.

1. Just because Theo is the man doesn't mean that he's infallible. 2. I would be okay with signing guys to contracts with a $5 mill AAV or even a little higher for 2-3 years. When I say that you don't need to hand out the big contracts, I'm talking about signing someone like Kimbrell to a 4 year/$60 mil deal. Big difference. 3. Who were the 2 best Cubs relievers by fWAR? Carl Edwards Jr., who made under $600K and Jesse Chavez who made roughly $1 million. Granted, Edwards Jr. is under team control and not a free agent, so he's in a different boat, but I think it still speaks to the point.

Ben was not given the chance to see things through. He should not have been 'fired' so quickly. The back to back last place finishes colored everyone's judgment (except mine ) on just how good the team really was.

Cashman is a very good GM, especially since George passed away. He's no Theo, but he's very good. Honestly, I think he took a page out of Theo's book.

My point is and has always been that you don't have to spend big on relievers. I have never once suggested that we don't pay attention to the pen or that we put together a mediocre pen. You can put together a great pen, including a great closer, without handing out big contracts or trading away the farm. The difficult part is in identifying those pitchers.

I'm not saying that Theo and Ben haven't spent big on closers in the past, but I'm saying that they have taken risks in the past by going with the under the radar players at key positions, including pitching. Take a risk, Dave!

Brasier will not have an ERA of 1.60 next season. His peripherals were not that good. Will he be good enough to be a closer? That's a different question.
