  1. Having a strong bullpen, as a whole, is very important. Focusing so much attention on the role of the closer is not. The vast majority of the time, the team entering the 9th inning with the lead is the team that wins the game.
  2. Jack, you are a voice of reason on this board. My point in the argument is simply that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get a very, very good closer.
  3. I don't know that I would say I'm intrigued by this, but I find it interesting that when I saw the name Tuiasosopo, I immediately thought it was a football player. It's interesting because I rarely watch football, yet I vaguely remember there being a football player by that name. I watch baseball every day during the season, yet can't recall a baseball player by that name.
  4. I 100% sincerely believe that we would have still won the division with a replacement level closer. But here's the thing. When a closer has to be replaced, he is not going to be replaced by a replacement level player. He is going to be replaced by the 8th inning guy, with the 8th inning guy being replaced by the 7th inning guy, etc. In reality, you are replacing your #7 pen guy with a replacement level player, which makes it pretty much a wash. This is one of the reasons why replacement level for a closer is so low.
  5. Well that depends on how many save opportunities a team has. The Sox had more opportunities than most other teams had. Kimbrel had 42 saves in 47 chances, which is an 89.4% success rate. A bad closer having 39 saves in those same 47 chances would have an 83% success rate. That sounds about right to me for a 'bad' closer.
  6. Completely agree with this.
  7. We had a lot of cost controlled players this year who were big contributors. Will that be the case in a few years?
  8. I get very attached to our players. I hate to see any of them go. At the same time, I can't see handing out the kind of contract he will likely get. With everything said, my bet is that he'll be a Red Sox for a long time.
  9. So, a bad closer might have only had 39 saves, and as Notin pointed out, the Sox might have still won some of those games. Let's assume that the 3 blown saves were all against the Yankees and the Sox ended up losing all 3 games. That's a 6 game swing. The Sox still win the division.
  10. Theo > Ben > Dave Tito > Cora > Farrell
  11. We did not need Ben to clean up 'Theo's mess'. There would not have been a mess if he'd been given the autonomy that Dombrowski has. We did not need Dombrowski as the closer. We needed Ben to be given more time to close out his own success.
  12. Personally, I think it's the other way around. Posters here think Dombrowski is some kind of a god, the savior who pulled the Red Sox out of the abyss, the genius who can do no wrong. Anyway you slice it up, Theo and Ben are more responsible for the three AL East titles and the WS Championship. I'm not taking shots at Dombrowski, I'm just telling it like it is.
  13. It might not seem like a huge deal in terms of savings to Henry, being the billionaire that he is, but it's not good business sense to spend recklessly, just because you can.
  14. It's already been fairly ugly since the extension kicked in.
  15. Also, I want to clarify that the signing of Kimbrel was not only about the name. Kimbrel was also a top shelf closer.
  16. Theo also has more than enough acquisitions to show that he is not all about the big name. He is even on record as saying that this was one of the difficulties that he had with Lucchino, who wanted to sign the splashy players.
  17. Are you going to put Bailey, Hanrahan, and Melancon (at the time) in the same category as Kimbrel? They were not the well known names that Kimbrel is. We're talking about the appeal to the casual fans. IMO, I would place the former three into the 'second tier' category.
  18. I am with you on this NS.
  19. Again, not that I would do that deal, but it at least makes a little more sense from the Red Sox side of things. They have to get some kind of a discount if they're willing to buy out 2 arb years plus go that long term. I can't wait to see what Machado and Harper get.
  20. Oh yay. We finally agree on something. I was starting to get worried.
  21. Best managed season ever? Yes Best manager ever? Too soon to say. The same thing can be said about the RFer.
  22. Ha. Good one!
  23. We might have still won without any of those players.
  24. And somehow, this is one of my favorite moves of Dombrowski's era.
