  1. Tulo is not going to be a 5 WAR player. That said, it's possible that he could be a 2 WAR player. If we had any kind of need for him, and had the space for him, I'd take him for the major league minimum.
  2. I keep hoping that the GMs will stop offering these ludicrous contracts. Haven't seen it happen yet. I just read that the Nats gave Harper a new offer, one that is 'significantly higher' than the 10 yrs/$300 mil proposal. Sheesh.
  3. Go stat geeks!
  4. I got mine for Christmas.
  5. But it also doesn't make much sense to save your best reliever for a situation that never comes. I would hate to lose a game in the 7th or 8th inning with my best reliever sitting on the bench.
  6. I am on board with most of what you say.
  7. The best way to go when building a bullpen.
  8. Amen to all of that Moon. Let's win another WS in 2019 and put the icing on the cake!
  9. I don't know if he'll sign an extension before reaching free agency or not, but I do think he'll remain with the Red Sox one way or the other. Dombrowski will have to get creative with the front loading and opt outs.
  10. I get the idea that people don't want the owners pocketing the money, and they'd rather see it going to the players. With Henry, I feel like he spends more than an ample amount on payroll, so that hasn't been an issue for me. Ideally, he throw some of that money back to the fans in the way of cheaper tickets, but I know that's not happening. I just keep hoping for those players who aren't all about the money. I understand that Mookie (or any player) has the right for to go for the most money. I just find it disheartening.
  11. Good to hear Moon. Don't overdo it.
  12. I think he's just waiting as long as possible to give Jacko some false hope.
  13. As I told you before, relax. Stop sweating bullets. Dombrowski will get you a closer that you will be pleased with.
  14. I agree that going with Brasier or Barnes would not be devastating, but I will be highly surprised if Dombrowski doesn't add a known closer. I just can't see that happening.
  15. Not really surprised, but I'm beginning to wonder if Harper is going to regret turning down the reported offer of 10 yrs/$300 mil.
  16. Reigning World Champions. Enough said.
  17. Back to back to back to back. Enough said.
  18. I don't think that Betts is in any hurry to leave Boston. At the same time, I get the impression that he's going to follow the money, so there is no sense of 'loyalty', or whatever you want to call it, holding him here. If the Red Sox give him the deal that he wants, he'll stay.
  19. If we say goodbye to the players you mentioned, that is several more holes that are going to need to be filled. Again, tough to do when you're tying up $32 mil to a single player and you don't have the cost-controlled players to balance it out. As several posters have said, it will be interesting to see how Dombrowski handles the next couple of off seasons. I completely get why people want to keep Betts at any cost. I really, really, really want to keep him too. I just can't see paying him that kind of money to do so.
  20. Having a strong bullpen, as a whole, is very important. Focusing so much attention on the role of the closer is not. The vast majority of the time, the team entering the 9th inning with the lead is the team that wins the game.
  21. Jack, you are a voice of reason on this board. My point in the argument is simply that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get a very, very good closer.
  22. I don't know that I would say I'm intrigued by this, but I find it interesting that when I saw the name Tuiasosopo, I immediately thought it was a football player. It's interesting because I rarely watch football, yet I vaguely remember there being a football player by that name. I watch baseball every day during the season, yet can't recall a baseball player by that name.
  23. I 100% sincerely believe that we would have still won the division with a replacement level closer. But here's the thing. When a closer has to be replaced, he is not going to be replaced by a replacement level player. He is going to be replaced by the 8th inning guy, with the 8th inning guy being replaced by the 7th inning guy, etc. In reality, you are replacing your #7 pen guy with a replacement level player, which makes it pretty much a wash. This is one of the reasons why replacement level for a closer is so low.
  24. Well that depends on how many save opportunities a team has. The Sox had more opportunities than most other teams had. Kimbrel had 42 saves in 47 chances, which is an 89.4% success rate. A bad closer having 39 saves in those same 47 chances would have an 83% success rate. That sounds about right to me for a 'bad' closer.
