We could bring Kimbrel back and sign Robertson or Britton on top of that, and our pen might end up okay, or great, or abhorrent. Spending big bucks on relievers doesn't guarantee anything. The Yankees presumably had the great pen of all time, one that could shorten games to 3 innings. Where did that get you?

Why does the best possible closer have to be expensive? And yes, good enough is good enough!

A top notch closer is in our budget. Dombrowski and team just need to identify him.

GMs are willing to spend money on these well known relievers who are established closers. They need to dig a little deeper, IMO. That said, signing a closer to a 2 year deal, even if the AAV is a little higher, would be preferable to signing one to a 4 year deal.

I like the CBS Sports fantasy projections. I guess that as of now, Brasier is our closer. Personally, I'd be okay with that, though I'm sure that I'm alone in that sentiment. As I stated above, I don't believe that Dombrowski is okay with that, despite what he says.

Actually, I'm not sure that Dombrowski agrees with my line of thinking. I think that he feels like we need that superstar closer in the bullpen, and his willingness to give up what he gave up for Kimbrel attests to that. I do not believe for a minute that Dombrowski is okay with letting Brasier and Barnes fight it out for the closer's role. He will bring in an established closer.

All the more reason not to spend like drunken sailors. I absolutely hate that the Sox' payroll is so high. I appreciate Henry's willingness to spend, and I'm not giving back our WS trophy, but I really do not like that we have to have such a high payroll to get there.

Most of our players are still in or are approaching their prime years. I didn't see any performances that I would consider to be fluky. There is no reason to expect significant drop offs from this team. There are some players who might not be quite as good as they were this year, like Mookie, but there are others who should improve, like Devers. Barring extreme injuries, we are good to go.

As others have said, I am just not concerned with the current state of our team. We are that good. I'm not sure where Dombrowski will find our relievers, but I know that we are not going into the 2019 season with our BP as currently constructed. That is just not something Dombrowski would do.

It would be nice to have Kimbrel back, but it would have to be on the team's terms, not on his terms. Kimbrel's initial asking price of 6 years is starting to sound as ridiculous as JD's original asking price last off season. I give Dombrowski credit for waiting out the market on relievers.

Saves may or may not be easy to come by. It depends on the exact situation of the save. The problem is that the save is a terrible stat. Anyone who is trying to assess a pitcher for any reason should not be looking at saves as the primary stat, or even as one of the most important stats.

That voter who isn't going to vote for Rivera is a problem in and of itself, IMO. As far as Oritz and Schilling are concerned, I would say yes. Is the debate about whether Oritz and Schilling are clear-cut choices baseball related (do they have the numbers?) or is it related to Oritz being a DH and Schilling being a guy whose mouth ticks a lot of people off? I don't think there's really a debate about the former. The latter should not be the reason why a player is not voted in.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We do not have to spend a boatload in order to get a very good closer.

I agree. I don't think Kimbrel is going to get anywhere near what he was originally asking.

I don't expect to win 109 games again. I also don't expect anything to be a cakewalk. That last year's season looked as easy as it did was truly a surprise. I do, however, expect to contend for the division and another WS ring, even if we did nothing else for the remainder of the off season. Do you really think Dombrowski is finished? He will improve the BP. Guaranteed.

There is speculation that the market for Kimbrel is just not there, and that he may just fall back into the Red Sox laps. I still wouldn't sign him for 4 years. My preference would be 2 years, but I'd be (begrudgingly) willing to do three.
