  1. Actually, I agree with both of you in the use of the phrase. I get the point that NS was trying to make though.
  2. IMO, it's okay to mostly stand still when the team is as good as the Red Sox. There is no need to try to improve just for the sake of not standing still. There's really not much room for improvement. That said, Dombrowski will not leave the bullpen as it is. It will be improved before the start of the season.
  3. In terms of simpler or more traditional stats, K/W ratio, WHIP, and IP are good places to start. There are many excellent advanced stats to use. WAR and FIP/xFIP are good places to start. For relief pitchers, Meltdowns and Shutdowns are much better stats to use over the traditional Saves or Blown Saves. As always, the more stats one looks at, the better.
  4. I would do Porcello's contract all over again if given the chance to go back in time, and I felt this way after his first year with us, before he won the Cy and we won the WS.
  5. 1. I consider any contract over 4 years to be a long term contract. Four years is not necessarily 'long term', depending on the player. If you recall, I was okay with Hanley's contract too. 2. The number of years is a big thing for me. I have said many times that I prefer to pay of higher AAV for fewer years than the other way around. Even though the total contract amount is not too different between the two, there is a huge difference between 4 years and 7 years. 3. Porcello was entering his prime, Pedroia was not. I will admit that I have defended Pedroia's contract many times, mostly because he was signing at such a low AAV (team discount). I am at the point now where I would not give that many years. Mookie's situation is not that dissimilar to what Pedroia's was.
  6. We do not want to be an entitled fan base. It's what we hated about the Yankees during the George years.
  7. I like this post.
  8. Ah. My bad on missing that. I should have known, since you are against big contracts as I am.
  9. I am leaning towards after 2019 for the reset, but much of whether we reset depends on what happens this year.
  10. If Henry were not reigning things in a bit financially, I believe that our closer would already be signed. Now, I firmly believe that Dombrowski will still get us a closer, and he might still have to pay more than Henry would like, but it's kind of the 'do whatever you can to avoid a big contract' plan first. There may be no other option that Dombrowski finds suitable.
  11. That leads to the question of whether not adding is the same as subtracting.
  12. Nah, it implies that sometimes the best moves are the ones that aren't made.
  13. WAR and other analytics are the farthest thing from magic formulas that you can find in baseball. Things like line up protection and clutch, those are based on magic formulas. WAR is not really a predictive stat, but rather a descriptive one. It does an excellent job of describing what has happened. It doesn't do as good a job at predicting what will happen. That said, it's as good as or better than whatever else you want to use to predict the future.
  14. That would drive me absolutely nuts.
  15. A DH falls in a category similar to relief pitchers. A DH should not be penalized for not playing defense. And yes, DHs should absolutely be considered for the HOF.
  16. Because 'relief pitcher' is an actual role in MLB, then relievers (not just closers) should be admitted or not admitted to the Hall based on how good they are in comparison to other relievers. It's not fair to compare a relief pitcher to a starter. Relievers have to be compared to other relievers.
  17. No, it was not.
  18. Thirty may not be old, but 30 at the beginning of a long term contract is.
  19. Oh, I'm not saying that Dombrowski's not getting us a closer. He'll get us one, even if he ends up having to pay more than he'd like. But I don't think Dombrowski currently has the open checkbook that he had a few years ago. Henry probably gave the directive to limit the contract given to a closer, if possible. That's why Dombrowski is waiting things out.
  20. The funny thing is, I think it was right before that series that Cashman made his "Do Damage" statement.
  21. And Kimbrel isn't exactly a spring chicken.
  22. I really like Moreland. I'm not nearly as eager to trade him away as some others are.
  23. In 2018: Kimbrel - fWAR = 1.5, Salary = $15 mil Barnes - fWAR = 1.3, Salary = $500K I'll let you guys do the math.
  24. Don't get nervous. Has Dombrowski ever let you down?
