  1. If the Sox are in need of a pitcher, then considering what the Yankees line up looks like might make some sense. But that's not the same as the Yankees making a move and the Sox feeling the need to make a move to counter. I have never said that the Sox are the unequivocal favorites. We could add 2 or 3 top relievers and I still wouldn't call it an unequivocal thing. That said, I do think that they remain the team to beat.
  2. Methinks you worry too much about the Yankees.
  3. Not going to happen.
  4. I'm not saying that I like Eovaldi's contract. Far from it. However, the last place that I want to spend big on is the BP. Re-signing Eovaldi or acquiring another similar starter was a higher priority than retaining Kimbrel or a similar reliever. I really don't think the budget is as stringent an issue as for this year as it is for future years. What is keeping the Sox from signing relievers is not the amount, but the length of the contract. Pearce's contract has no bearing on the budget for relievers because it was for only one year.
  5. No, they certainly are not.
  6. I pretty much agree with all of this Moon. I think we have a good shot at winning it all again in 2019 without further jeopardizing the future. I don't have the answers to how all of this will or should play out. It will take some creativity. The Sox have apparently been talking extension with one of young players, presumably Beni. That's a good place to start, IMO.
  7. For whatever reason, a lot of people equate 'great' with 'expensive'. Yes, great can mean expensive, but it doesn't have to be that way. A great BP can be built for relatively cheap amounts. The best closers/relievers often come out of nowhere. Kimbrel's market seems to be dwindling, but I'm guessing he will still get a lucrative deal. Not anything close to the $100 mil though.
  8. Dombrowski has been in win now mode since he came here. I'm not sure why this year would be any different, especially when there's such a strong chance of us repeating. Unless Henry has really tightened the reigns.
  9. Truth be told, he should have been thinking about 2020 when he was selling the farm back in 2016.
  10. Your mistake was in asking Alexa. Next time, ask Kimmi.
  11. I get all that, but I still have to wonder what you can do with $250 mil that you can't do with $220 mil.
  12. Not me. I'm the bargain shopper, remember?
  13. Maybe. I don't follow the other owners closely enough to know. I don't think you can say that Henry is all about the money. If he were, he wouldn't eat the contracts that he has eaten.
  14. 1. The Red Sox should never make a move to counter a move that the Yankees have made. 2. What the heck is he even talking about that a 6 year deal for Kimbrel suddenly doesn't seem so outrageous? Of course it's outrageous. 3. Do the Yankees have baseball's best bullpen? I don't know. 4. The Yankees had baseball's best bullpen last year, one that was capable of shortening a game to 3 innings. Where did that get them? 5. The Red Sox are still the team to beat. Plain and simple.
  15. Pearce, maybe. But when I think about how much lower Moreland's numbers are against LHP, then no. Eovaldi, definitely not. He was much more a priority than signing anyone for the pen.
  16. IMO, our pen entering the season will be one that you will be happy with.
  17. Agreed. I still wouldn't go all out for a closer if that means further restricting us financially in the coming years, but I agree with what you're saying overall.
  18. Tomorrow only never comes if you don't plan for it.
  19. And I will ask you again. Do you really think Dombrowski is going to go into the season with a second rate bullpen?
  20. Thank you. Let's have a little faith in Dombrowski. Despite my criticism of him, he knows what he is doing. When all is said and done with the bullpen, I am likely to be less happy with it than most of the posters here.
  21. Nah, I don't want to spend, period.
  22. That won't happen. If we lose the division or in the playoffs, it will be because of other reasons.
  23. The problem with 'win now' mode is that it might further steepen the upcoming cliff. The team is really good as it is. Dombrowski should be able to find us a great closer at a reasonable price. It may even be Kimbrel if his market keeps dropping.
