Obviously, none of knows what the clubhouse is like. Maybe they're relieved and renewed by having Devers being gone, maybe they're completely bummed. I guess we'll see. I am almost certain that Devers will hurt us in the upcoming series against San Fran, because that's just the way these things go. LOL We scored a lot of runs in the first Yankees series, but in the current 5-game win streak, we've averaged 3 runs/game. There's no stop sign. As they say, momentum is only as good as your next day's starter. -
Perhaps. Or perhaps it doesn't say a lot for Devers' attitude. We really don't know. I'm not trying to bash Devers. I really liked having him on our team. I was really unhappy with his refusal to play 1B, though. I conceded that the FO could have handled the situation a lot better, but Devers could have handled it a lot better too. As a player in the clubhouse, he has to put his hurt feelings aside and think of his teammates first.

Personally, I haven't given up on the division yet, but we are only 0.5 games out of a wildcard spot. The season is far from over. No single bat is likely to replace Devers' production, but we now have some financial flexibility and some roster flexibility. Not to mention a likely improved clubhouse atmosphere.

As far as I recall, Papi had always been a huge fan/supporter of Devers. For him to say this is saying something. He speaks the truth.

I agree that there was a lack of communication and that the FO handled the entire Devers/Bregman situation poorly from the start. That said, I am thinking players in the clubhouse were more upset with Devers refusal to play 1B than they were in support of him, though they would not publicly voice that. In other words, I'm not sure that players will start tuning out Breslow. I think they understand. Going forward, communication does have to improve.

The team took a big hit talent wise, for sure. Devers is one of the best hitters in the league, and his production will be hard to replace. Ownership is obviously looking more towards next year and beyond than they are looking at this year. I'm not saying that they're giving up on this season, but that they had to protect future of the kids. At least this somewhat alleviates the logjam.

This deal wasn't about the return package. It was about ridding themselves of the massive contract (a big plus) because they felt the need to rid themselves of a player that they felt was selfish. Devers was not setting a good example for the many young players on this team. He was not providing good player leadership, something this team sorely needs. The FO sent a message that they don't care how big a superstar you are and how much money you're getting paid, the team comes first.

I don't know what happened in that meeting, but according to the people in the know, Devers was as good as gone by the time that meeting concluded.

No thanks, I really don't want daily documentation. We once had a thread about how many games Tito cost the Red Sox. Pretty much all of those "bad" decisions could be easily defended.

It doesn't sound like Anthony is going anywhere any time soon. I wouldn't think the Sox would call him up just to send him back down once Abreu returns. I had forgotten about Yoshida, who presents even more of a logjam. It sounds like he's still about a month away though.

Buy, but not at the expense of the long term. It's a fine line to tread, and typically ends up with moves that don't wow most fans. Despite not having the wow factor, with a little luck, these moves can end up being very good moves. I'm a fan of this philosophy, though I think most would disagree with me, -
A common criticism of WAR is the difference, sometimes large, between a player's bWAR and fWAR. One way the difference is described is that bWAR tells you more of what actually happened on the field while fWAR tells you more of what should have happened on the field. fWAR is the better predictive stat. The difference between the two stats does not make WAR a bad or meaningless stat, however.

I don't disagree. While I really don't want to trade any of our current outfielders, I think it goes without saying that if the right trade comes along, you make the trade.

On my list of teams that I really don't want to win the World Series, the Dodgers are #2 behind only the Yankees. The strange thing about that is that I really like 95% of the Dodgers players, not to mention Dave Roberts.

We will have to disagree on this. I am confident that Cora has a very good understanding of the game situations, and that he makes fewer mistakes than what you are criticizing him for.

Assuming everyone remains healthy, I don't know what the answer is when Abreu and Bregman return. Personally, I like to keep as much depth as possible. That typically means that guys with options get sent down. That is usually not the popular decision, nor is it necessarily the right decision.

I guess I have forgiven Henry for all that, but yeah, I can't really disagree with you. Tito and Theo were the best, IMO.

I pretty much agree Moon. I don't expect Story to hit like he hit the first 3 weeks of April, but he is certainly capable of a lot better than what we saw in May. As far as the defense goes, Story has made a few really nice plays the past few games. His overall defensive numbers are down right now, but defensive stats take a much larger sample to stabilize. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'm optimistic that he'll be a valuable contributor on both sides of the ball. I would not be opposed to moving him to 2B when Bregman returns. Campbell to first base? In a small sample, Romy and Toro have been pretty good there. As they say, I guess it's a good problem to have. As they also say, these things have a way of working themselves out.

Exactly. I was very happy to see that Tito's health was good enough to allow him to return to managing. I am pulling for the Reds, except when they play the Red Sox.

Fair enough on all counts. You can read a lot more about what's going on with both the pitcher and the batter when you're behind the plate than when you're sitting in the dugout. Obviously, I don't know either Bailey or Varitek personally, but I tend to think that both are very intelligent in terms of what they do as coaches. It would behoove them to be on the same page in terms of game planning.

I don't have a good answer on how to make room for Anthony, but personally, I am against trading any of Duran, Rafaela, or Abreu. I understand it may be necessary for a couple of reasons, but I'm against it. What are our options if one of the remaining outfielders has a significant injury?

I don't know if the Sox will make a big run at the end of the year, but 1-run games randomness is a big factor.
