  1. For me, it was not merely not re-signing Mookie - though I certainly think they should have. It was the dawdling about the entire thing - if they knew he wanted to leave (premise) they were not bold about moving him earlier. If they were counting on keeping him, they did not go to the mat. Door #1 here is a hard PR sell, but it would have at least been defensible.
  2. It has been fun. The overall team approach to pitching has been a season changer of course, where the team has drastically reduced the diet of 4-seam fastballs. The full throttle comment in the offseason was unfortunate - and definitely part of ownership sounding like supervillains unnecessarily. But giving the kids some run has borne fruit and has been fun to watch. Abreu being on a rookie of the year sort of start before his injury is another to be excited about seeing.
  3. I don't think there is a rush per se - particularly with Mayer who just needs to complete a healthy season.
  4. There is a lot of power in Ceddane's teeny tiny body
  5. He has been good - but 9th inning guy is what it is. I would not just trade him willy nilly.
  6. If he is not careful, Yorke might get a look.
  7. There are places they can sell. I'd STILL listen to offers for Jansen - I wouldn't just dump him, but he is a luxury good on this team, and if you can get something good, do it. Winckowski seems like a candidate to move. 2B needs help clearly - but I kinda think maybe they'll just see what Yorke later in the season - and assuming he continues to play well at Woo-stah.
  8. Seeing Rafaela slowly start to put some games together is very encouraging. He is very close to being the sort of hitter he can be (low OBP but good contact with pop) Who would have expected Duran to be on the MVP long list this far in the season? (or any other time) Or for Tanner Houck to be legit in the running for Cy? Nice to see them have a good homestand. The negative vibes around the home games have been rough on the players actually playing. And we can't say enough about how Cora and Bailey have made the pitching staff work.
  9. wiping his tears with $100 bills
  10. Casas' performance on the broadcast might have generated more WAR than any Sox player has this season. That was delightful.
  11. I could also see the team just giving Mayer a chance for a sustained period of just being healthy and playing. He is handling the level fine as a pretty young regular. Plenty of time for him.
  12. With Perales and Gonzalez the challenge has been finding a repeatable delivery so you can actually have command-control etc. Perales has stopped walking people. Wikelman has not. Bleis just has to be healthy. I am excited about him, Cespedes and Zannatello. But they are all just so young and so far away from the bigs that the range of outcomes is still super wide. It is easy to act like not being at Portland by 22 is some sort of death sentence or something.
  13. This is why the team likes drafting shortstops.
  14. Given that he is a good athlete, if the bat allows him to project as a regular corner, then that's a solid prospect.
  15. Law's updated Top 50 in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5530418/2024/06/03/mlb-top-50-prospects-in-season-holliday/ 4. Mayer (8 preseason) 19. Teel (54 preseason) 25. Anthony (22 preseason)
  16. After two horrendous starts, Wikelman Gonzalez has started to hit a groove in Portland.
  17. Zanatello and Cespedes look like big upside guys but in each case it is very, very early.
  18. He is exciting - the athleticism is beyond reproach.
  19. in 2023 when he did play cf ... in LA his numbers were bad up the middle also ... 2021 he was terrific
  20. Kike was also 31 years old, and managed to also be bad in CF and 2B in Boston and LA. His defensive contribution early in LA in CF is bad ... he might just simply be a guy who has to be on a corner now. Rafaela at SS is not an ideal option, but asking this of a 23 year old plus athlete who has experience doing it is an entirely different deal.
  21. poor guy - i loved his attitude all spring, dude can't catch a break
  22. I think the likelihood they participate at the top end of free agency - especially where we are dealing with 30+ year olds - is low with a few targeted exceptions. But I do think they will be aggressive and spend decently on retaining their better young players ... and guys they land in trade. If they are at the top of the payroll mountain, it will be because they have a lot of really good talent in their mid 20s.
  23. I am one of those people - just because he hadn't figured out a consistent way to get lefties out. And obviously, his delivery gives lefties a great look at him. If that gets fixed, he should stay in the rotation. The A's aren't proof of much of anything.
  24. I have concerns on a bunch of fronts, but the Bello and Devers extensions happened. Also, when you see the dirt cheap deals that Snell and Montgomery got ... there are a lot of cheap owners out there.
  25. especially with the rule changes limiting the ways that postioning can be used to paper over limitations ... managers and coaching staffs have less power to hide poor infield defense
