  1. He might be an option someday. He is still young and he is off to a good start. Got a little hitting streak going. I wonder if Brentz is a little confused these days. He also is off to a very solid start. You would think that if the experiment continues, he might at least be deserving of a look.
  2. This is a great post. thanks for sharing.
  3. I'm ok with this and I am sure that you are as well. But (there always is one) if the right pitcher was out there, my guess is that they would do what they had to do. If there is a choice, for me it would be prospects as opposed to guys at the ml level right now.
  4. I totally agree. I really do just think that his greatest value will be as we go forward if he stays in Boston.
  5. If it meant that we could acquire a young controllable future top of the rotation guy (at the ml level right now), I would trade any of our "very best" prospects. The only snag would be how many of them had to be dealt.
  6. Trust me, i do not and would not undervalue the importance of a great defensive catcher. I basically responded here to create some conversation. I'm actually happy with Vazquez. You are obviously into statistical analysis to a great extent. How is Vazquez doing compared to the 'elites' of the league? What are the numbers telling you? Is he making our pitching staff better? I think that it remains to be seen whether or not he becomes the great defensive catcher that we all want to see. Hope he does but I'm not convinced of it just yet. If he is good but not great and can't hit .220, thanks - I'll pass.
  7. I agree with this. All things being equal, we might have been better off with a healthy Swihart behind the plate.
  8. I'm not sure that I totally agree but I would say that if the best you can do is a great catcher who can't hit .220 is the best you can do then what you are coming up with in your system is piss poor.
  9. His stock is on the rise again. What will they do with him? Tradition says that the Sox will want to see him come along slowly and follow what most of us would agree is a normal progression before ultimately winding up in Fenway. On the other hand, his stock as a trade chip is right up there where Swihart's and Travis's was before their injuries. We need young talented pitching that isn't years away from getting to Boston.
  10. I think I know where you are going with this and I agree. At .225, .240 or whatever, if he is an above average catcher, it is all good. if he isn't, then not so good. I guess that he is getting the job done.
  11. He is just starting to get it going.
  12. Bastards 1 and 2 even look alike. For the record, I am not a hater (sounds Nixonian) but I would like them more if they were both playing for someone else.
  13. Deep breaths required of Red Sox fans once again when even thinking about our prospects. It sounds as though in the eyes of some that this kid has already gone by Espinoza. Remember him? To acquire a top of the line young current major league pitcher I would package them both and throw in Moncada to boot. They are prospects and they are a long ways away from Fenway.
  14. Wright is the obvious pick here. I remember many and I mean many of us speaking up here for him to get his chance to hold down the number5 spot in the rotation. Pretty much all of us felt that he could at least compete for it along with Owens and Johnson. No one repeat no one could have seen what he has done thus far coming . It is safe to say that all of us have believed all along that Bogaerts was going to be able to be an excellent hitting shortstop at the ml level. He is stretching the limits right now though. What he has done in the field is what truly makes him special in my mind. He is an elite ss both at the plate and in the field. i remember no one predicting that he was going to be as good in the field as he has become.
  15. this makes me chuckle!!!
  16. You just have to remember that last year this year's hitting coach of the year Chili Davis just sucked in the eyes of some. Brian Butterfield's(arguably their best on field guy) ass was on the line as well. When the players actually play most of their coaches look a pant load better. if this pitching staff all of a sudden starts to look better so will the pitching coach. I also think that DD is going to make a move - a good one.
  17. I could be that grandpa!
  18. I'm fortunate to have experienced a lot of different activities or sports if you will at some pretty intense levels. I don't criticize them simply because I appreciate how hard it is to excel at anything. My guess is that regardless of the sport, if you want to be among the best, not only do you have to have a little talent, you also have to be willing to do the work. None of us gets to decide what the criteria is - for me it was could I run a marathon in under 2:40. How many pull-ups or dips could I do before someone stopped me. How long could I keep moving up and down the court after the fat guys sat down. What is my resting pulse rate? I'm pretty sure that depending upon the criteria you choose to use, you could prove that there are a lot of professional athletes in s*** shape for sure. Some of them might not even be particularly "athletic".
  19. Every game that Swihart did not catch made him less attractive as a potential catcher for any team that might have been interested in him.
  20. Leon is more than capable of getting the job done. he is another one who if he could only hit...
  21. I believe this as well. He is not stupid enough to try to temporarily plug the leak by giving up future players for possibly future has beens. I'm guessing that when he deals, he will deal big. Moving Swihart to left was an experiment they could afford to try because they had plenty of hitting in general. Maybe it would have worked long term maybe not. Maybe it still will. Young was and still is the better option in left field at present. It is still possible that the feeling was that Swihart was never going to be the catcher that he was projected to be long term. Whatever, i don't think he is going anywhere now. Hope he heals and develops.
  22. Apples to oranges - There is no real sport that if someone takes preparation seriously that won't wear down a body. Injuries because of constant collision might be more realized in some sports as opposed to others but really the harder you work the more likely you are to get hurt. All about what you put into it and makes n difference whether you are an amateur or professional.
  23. The longer the hold off by winning the better. I would hate to see them give anything for a rental of an old arm. They aren't in panic mode and probably will not be. I still believe that a deal will be made eventually but I think that it will be a big one when it gets done.
  24. What? No love for Russ here? Sadly, because of my youthful dislike of the man, i would take Wilt over any of the so-called big men playing the game today. He was at least as good from the lime as any of them and he could outrun them all.
  25. He has proven to be horribly inconsistent. Said he did not see this move back to AAA coming. Guess he should have looked over his shoulder before he started the game. If he could throw the ball over the plate a little more often, maybe he could help us in the pen, maybe not. I am looking forward to the day that we have 2 other options to look forward to as opposed to Kelly and Buch. My personal timeline for waiting for them to become something I don't think that they will ever become has expired.
