Barring a trade though, if Leon doesn't turn into a pumpkin, Vaz will half to hit one helluva lot better than he has thus far or he is destined to seat on the pine in Boston. As each day goes by, it appears to be Sandy's job tools more than ever don't you think?

Tommy Layne has been released by the Red Sox. Although I am not surprised. It was inevitable I think but it is still a very sad experience when it happens to a good person. A good family man. I wish him well and thank him for being a member of our team.

I don't really know where I see him as the rest of the year unfolds. He is the one pitcher close enough to the big league roster that still has some intrigue for me. Before his latest injury/anxiety issues, I thought that he might have been that mid rotation guy that Pomeranz is supposed to be. If he gets a couple more strong starts, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get another crack at a job in Boston of the situation presents itself. I don't like him spending an extended period of time in the minors if he looks and feels ready. I kind of believe in the "wasted bullet" theory. My opinion is that at one time he would have been a better option than Owens. He also could be packaged and traded during the off season. I think that it is more than likely that we see more than one good sized deal being made.

I like your opinion about him for what it is worth. Feeling that he has been awful and that it was a bad trade is just as extreme as saying that he has been excellent and that it was a great trade. He has had a couple of bad starts but I think that his future value is yet to be determined. I see him as a mid rotation arm and if he proves better than that, I will be thrilled. I won't be happy if he gives us less. Normally athletes are never as bad as they look when they are playing poorly nor are they always as good as they look when they are on top of their game. His first start for us was very bad.

Hindsight really is great stuff. In a previous post you have indicated that Pomeranz was performing at a level that was equal to a number 2 starter. I think that he is a solid 3/4. I am ok with this trade. I'm pretty sure that everyone would have been on board for a stronger package for a prominent #1 if one had been available. It is fun to speculate isn't it but the more I read your posts (which I do for the most part) the more I appreciate the job our general manager is doing. It is a tough job.

I absolutely agree with you. I guess my point was and is that he has done the job expected of him as a mid rotation pitcher. I always hope for better but in all reality if anybody thought that we were going to pick up someone better than him for basically Espinoza they live in a world of which I am not familiar.

check out Moons stats on the kid. You won't be so disappointed. 6 innings is good middle of the rotation kind of stuff these days. Maybe you wanted more from him than the Red Sox knew that they were going to get.

I just went over the "stats" that you posted with respect to Boston's WAR. It is not something that I do because I am not particularly interested in a statistical deluge. But - imagine what I saw when I looked at your compilation of Pomeranz's stats. People can decide what they personally feel about Pomeranz's start thus far with Boston. There are what maybe 3 people posting here who have been overly critical of what he has done so far. They just need to temper their expectations. We signed a middle of the rotation pitcher and that is what we got. Another solid deal for DD.

Ah well - that is the problem. Ace like stats. Over how many years of pitching has he had ace like stats? Not once did I read or hear from anyone connected with the team who knows anything about anything say that we were getting a pitcher who could become an ace because he had had a good run this year for a bad team. A young pitcher with the potential to be decent. It has been a good deal for the Red Sox and may prove to be a better deal going forward. No one likes to trade away any kind of talent particularly pitching talent. The fact remains that Pomeranz is currently a young middle of the rotation pitcher who has proven that he belongs in the big leagues. Espinoza , God bless him, may get to the big leagues in 3 to 5 years maybe.

In Pomeranz i think the Sox got what they were looking for. A young middle of the rotation starter with the potential to get better. Some here are acting as though we were getting an ace via this deal. We weren't and didn't. I think that he has performed pretty much as advertised. A solid deal for the Red Sox. Obviously though he isn't what some want him to be.

I also just don't like the idea of him sitting on the bench at all. A day of rest now and then like everybody else.

I also think that the constant lefty righty platoon that we see today is grossly overdone. There is a time and place to play the odds but i think that in many cases it provides a manager an easy way out that is easily defended and often represents a case of over coaching.

Oh i agree. I'm just saying that if there had not been a series of injuries it is at least likely that he would not have been called up.

Actually, i'm not so sure Benintendi would have been called up if Young had not been injured. Good thing Young doesn't equal Craig, Sandoval, and Castillo i guess.

Wish I had just seen the picture. i was 10 feet away from him in Portland and I'm thinking the camera might have made him appear a little larger than life. For his size, i bet that he is quite strong.

I absolutely agree with this!!! Bringing him up and not playing him against lefties is ridiculous. If the powers to be truly felt that he is good enough to be here and help this club, he needs to be on the field.

Moncada has also played in the outfield. The Red Sox have in general kept a lot of information in house. Good for them! In order to really know how he is doing in the field, we would have to watch him daily. The number of errors a player makes if just taken in isolation may not be all that telling but it is a significant stat. Taking everything into consideration, a really high number of errors is never a good thing. You lead the league in errors, it is a safe bet that you aren't a very good fielder. I don't think we are going to see him dh but before he plays in the bigs for anybody, he is going to have to be at least adequate in the field. Maybe there is someone here who has seen him play a number of times who could comment on how he looks.

Correcto - who ever spends that amount of time to just try to determine the number of bad decisions made by managers before they cost games, might not be having a beer with me on the porch. Too much time in a dark room. I agree with you very much that there are many things that could come under the heading of "human element" that can not be statistically measured. Confidence, anxiety, stress, attitude of the clubhouse in general, as well as a feel for the game.

Too many players and you didn't even list them all. I continue to believe that they will take care of any pitching issues via the trade route and that they will take care of the position of dh either by using Ramirez there ( which I hope they don't do) or by signing Encarnarcion or a player like him. I'm not a big advocate of stock piling ml ready players just to prove to everyone that you have depth. I'm guessing that the field of candidates for position players gets shortened thru the trade process.

I think that you are right and that is a problem for me. It is no knock on him either because he is as tough as they come. To compete at the top of the food chain, you need a minor bunch of guys as tough as he is.

Brian johnson had another nice start in Pawtucket. Pulling for this guy. I really would like to see what he is capable of when healthy. Good for him that he is back in action.
