  1. if he continues to throw like he is currently, I think that he can help as well. i do think that he would profit from a little role definition though. it would help him and us.
  2. I realize that they do have a budget, but for the reasons you stated I am pretty much convinced that it is nearly limitless. I think that they will try to do their due diligence when it comes to spending but my guess is that we won't hear the words - we can't afford it- spoken.
  3. I get what you are saying. Much of it makes sense. The problem as I see it is that we have no idea how much money the total franchise makes in a calendar year. I'm sure that no one wants to go over the luxury tax, but it is a decision that probably is directly related to how much money the whole package makes. I have to think that the decisions made during the off season will be ones that strengthen the team going forward. If they have a specific player in mind that they want to acquire, I really don't think that their "budget" will keep them from moving on it.
  4. The decision made next year relating to the dh will have very little to do with dollars spent. They may choose to go out and get a player the likes of Encarnarcion or they may just handle the position from within. Ultimately they will make a decision based upon how they can maintain a strong position going forward. As they have been for many years, they are a big market team with few budgetary restrictions. It's very likely that they sign Encarnarcion and trade for a totr pitcher as well. They won't be changing their stripes all of sudden and start acting like a budget conscious franchise. It's good to be King.
  5. He was brought up out of just plain need. You had to have someone back there who could at least give you adequate defense on a daily basis. He is 26 years old - the medical staff cleared- it was his time. I really am not sure that he is going to become any where near the catcher that everyone projected. He is starting to hit a little better at the AAA level. Not great but better. It is very conceivable that he becomes a trade candidate. If they decide that he becomes the backup going forward great, but he might very well have great value for us a trade chip. Backup catchers you can find - not so much with top of the line pitchers.
  6. Someone is going to go during the off season and I sure as hell hope that is a prospect or prospects and not a player who is starting to become a very good major league player - Bradley. We are getting to close to seeing what he will give us going forward i think. As much as we all love our prospects, I just think it is a big stretch to think any of them currently at the major or minor league level will jump right out and give us what he is giving us right now.
  7. i wouldn't really call having more talent then some think we need mucking anything up first of all. Swihart has already been introduced to the mix also. I'm not as convinced as some that Moncada should be penciled in at third base just yet as well. Benintendi should be out there going forward but I don't see him as a sure thing yet either. just saying - somebody (maybe more than one) won't be on the roster next year. Somebody is going to get traded. it will be interesting to see what does happen. going to be some great competition.
  8. he is rounding into form.
  9. i agree with you here. Shaw earned the job but I don't think the rope tieing him to the bag was long enough. He has the type of swing that provides power that could help us down the stretch. I don't think that it is likely to happen if he can only count on 3 or maybe 4 games per week.
  10. I've liked him more than I have liked Owens for a couple of years now. Just want him to be healthy and get a chance. If it is with us, even better.
  11. I have this album! Holds a special place right along beside Havlicek stole the ball.
  12. This I absolutely agree with. In all honesty, the best player I ever saw play was Willie Mays but Yaz had without one doubt in my mind the greatest single season that I ever saw. Pretty good career as well. lol
  13. Great post!
  14. Agree here - I'm just not sure that we have seen the best of Young just yet. I think that he can still be very valuable and as a 4th outfielder should not be looked at as a "backup".
  15. Are you trying to make a point about playing time for Young here? I was not really addressing that but I would give him ample opportunity as well - as a 4th outfielder. obviously with an emphasis toward lefties but unlike most I guess, he would just simply get a shot against anyone from me. Once again, using him every 3rd or 4th day and expecting him to blossom is asking too much. Plenty of at bats there for 4 outfielders.
  16. Too much lefty righty lefty righty lefty righty for me. too much platooning I guess for me as well. I would give Benintendi as well as Shaw all of the benefit that they could be given. No every other day - no herky jerky crap. They have to know that they are going to play. They have to be allowed to develop a rhythm to really find out what their potential is.
  17. I am with you on this one. Mauricio Dubon is having a great season. His current numbers put him at the head of the class for Portland. He is also very smooth in the field. He very well might have a great career.
  18. Ya ok - Let's see - guess this means that you must have expected the kid to come back after the rain delay. Happens all the time doesn't it. lol - Give this this young pitcher a chance. He looked good and was good.
  19. Glad it isn't my $ - but what the hell - it is the budget less Red Sox (lol)
  20. Are you responsible for all of this? You are the best! End of f***ing story. My new hero. I saw what you were able to do.
  21. I just read this - really! there is once again no credit given for being a fan and trying to follow the progress of our young players. it really isn't a contest but for you to even suggest that you knew something about Moncada before others did is ridiculous. I have had to defend my position with respect to him numerous times since March. I've said many times that he is a superior athlete to anyone we have or had in Benintendi's case. I'm sorry but you do try to present as being ahead of the game with respect to most of the people posting here. You aren't. Enjoy the forum and I do think that you add to it but some of the regular posters here are not just fans - they are damn good baseball people. If it has been said, written, or observed, someone here will know about it.
  22. This has nothing to do with someone being right or wrong to me. i honestly hope that Espinoza becomes the great pitcher that some think that he might become. I'm patient as well but my time frame is obviously different than yours. If Pomeranz is able to pitch to a mid rotation or even higher level for us, it is quite possible that he will be responsible for between 40 and 50 wins for us at the major league level before Espinoza throws a ball in the majors. In my opinion, it was a good deal today as well as going forward. I don't agree with you but I value your opinion and realize that there are supporting arguments for either side. I don't think that this will be the last time the Sox use their young prospects as assets either. We can debate how we should use them until the cows come home, but we aren't making the ultimate decisions.
  23. Got to have faith right?
