We have a young star? Just kidding sort of. I like Betts, Benintendi, and Devers as much as the next guy but it is possible that we think that they are better than they actually are.

They can't , they just can't stop worrying about the $. It is who they are. I'm with you though. I know little and could care less about the luxury tax.

I was aware of it. The problem I see for many of us really though is that we tend to seriously overrate prospects that show any potential at all. Most of them just aren't that GD good when compared to what other teams have.

They should get many good years from a 28 year old. How good? Who knows. It really is a guessing game with most of these guys. I really don't see him as being the best hitter in baseball. A powerful hitter for sure but also has a little injury track record. I remember the euphoria surrounding the Hanley signing. I was never quite so sure of that signing. His most productive years looked to be behind him and he had had to deal with various injuries as well. Only time will tell what becomes of Stanton. I'm really not big time disappointed that we did not sign him. We still need that bat though! -

I just find it very encouraging that 6 of our top ten prospects are pitchers. Either our prospects just aren't very good or someone has seen the importance of developing our own pitchers these days.

I would think that he could and we know that there are teams out there who want him.

I don't know the names of the guys out there who could be targeted but I cannot help but think that JBJ with a few others kicked in, that we should be able to come away with someone decent. With that being said, i still don't really want to see JBJ go anywhere and there is still a good chance that he will stay put.

Which is a legitimate risk when you have a fairly young guy who has missed as much game time as he has. -
I agree for sure. i love JBJ and what he has done for Boston but signing Martinez and picking up a solid starter works for me. We have all been educated as to the fact that it is all about business. I also don't think that Martinez sucks in the outfield quite as much as some people think he does. We give up something but we gain a lot as well.

dastardly deliberate Dave - ever the optimist here. Martinez comes to Boston and JBJ is packaged for a good arm. That is what I have been saying for a long time now. Not going to change until I see Martinez sign with someone else.

Crowd needs to relax - i don't think that anybody is contemplating moving a gold glove right fielder back to second base. I do find it odd to hear how many people here are in favor of moving Devers and Bogaerts, positionally in addition to thinking that having JD Martinez in our outfield is just as unreasonable as maybe Hanley being able to play first. Add to that the number of people who think that it is an easy transition for lifelong middle infielders to move to corner infield positions and continue to consistently make plays, and I just have to chuckle. For the record, i was not advocating a move to second for Betts but he was a very good second baseman.

My point exactly. he may appear as the face of the org. but really I doubt seriously his voice is as powerful as some think it is. -
I suppose that you could say just about the same thing about Stanton if you go back and look at the total number of games played since he broke in. Now I would not like to see a trade of JBJ. I like our outfield as is but with respect to the durability of free agents that get signed, I guess that some of it is just a chance you take. I would also add that as much as I like Betts in the outfield, I always felt that he would wind up back at second base for the Sox. He was pretty good thee as well.

Hope that this is true. It almost sounds like it might be a little too good to be true. I hope that Dombrowski and Borass have that type of relationship. I'd be happily surprised.

I for sure didn't drink the good time - they all hit way below their averages - it is so unusual - and the long ball is grossly overrated kool aid, but we better all sure as hell hope that we get more out of Hanley and Mookie for sure. It would be nice to see X getting a little back and to see some progression from Benintendi. If we don't - if last year is who these guys are - we are just spinning tires.

I think that you are right on here. I doubt very much that DD is just twiddling thumbs. Tough negotiations would be my guess.

I think that it is definitely a concern but I do have faith in the fact that Hernandez can hold the line for us right now at second. I want to see the two power bats added first - maybe just the one - and then move on to other concerns. Don't need a lot of swat from that second baseman. he just needs to provide the D. Before the keyboard is cold some stat hound is going to tell me that he a less than blah blah fielder. Sorry I won't buy it. He is a middle infielder not a third baseman. I think that there is a huge difference between the two. He isn't likely to be able to pick it like Pedroia but I wouldn't be surprised if he is just fine.

I think that is exactly what the Red Sox should and will do with Hanley. Where you and I might disagree is that I don't think that it has anything to do with a special sense of urgency with respect to being "all in" for the next two seasons. Just seems to me what any team should do especially an organization like the Red Sox.

If Hanley is still with us come opening day, and it is possible that he won't be, and if he produces at the plate, he will play. I don't see the franchise dinking along playing the next year's option game with him. Pretty simple - if he hits he will play.

So many possibilities here. I too though hope that we don't wind up in an over pay for JD. I have felt for quite some time though that Bradley likely gets dealt.
