  1. I don't disagree with you much here notin. I guess that we are all fans and probably aren't privy to what goes on day to day in that dugout. The but here is that this is a talksox forum in a very slow off season and it is a forum made up of some well educated baseball fans. I love hearing and sharing opinions. As wrong as most of them are if they don't agree with me, I hope that they never stop giving them. leadership in general with respect to most organizations is very important and it can and should come from more than one person. What I really believe though is that we need to cut these guys some slack. It is a new year. As much as people were worked up over the Price Eck incident, I'm still not sure that he did anything wrong. I did not like what Pedroia said.
  2. He says that this year really was the first time that he was able to see. I'm really pulling for him and I don't care what notin says.
  3. I would consider that productive and maybe to good to just let go.
  4. I do not agree with you that their ships have sailed. I'm pretty sure notin (lol) that I understand that there is difference between minor league and major league pitching. I admit that they are both long shots. I'm really not sure that Chavis is going to be a better option either though. Now as for your chance of making this team being equal to that of Barfield's, I get the fact that you have a high opinion of yourself (that's a joke notin) but I guess I would have to bet on Barfield's being a little better than yours and I don't even know you.
  5. I'm on your wave length most of the time and that should make you nervous since I am an old guy not getting younger. Which could only mean ...
  6. I'll also add that if Brentz is released it should be obvious that someone is going to grab him quickly. I would not be surprised at all if he becomes a productive ml hitter with plenty of pop. I will be pulling for him to finally get a real chance with either us or more likely someone else.
  7. I'm really not advocating for either one of them. The point that I am making is that if you have a needed skill - such as the ability to whack the ball out of the park - an organization is not going to hurry to let you go. Brentz very well might fall victim to the numbers game based on who gets signed. There was a time that I truly felt that Marrero was our ss of the future - not now. He has really shown very little at the plate. If Brentz is kept, obviously he is going to get his chance. 29 or 30 is not a factor if either one of these two guys hits for power better than anyone else that we have in the minors. I really don't know who the best option is. I don't think anyone should be saying that Chavis is for sure a better option at this point than either Brentz or Barfileld. Barfield was invited to camp this spring for a reason. The Red Sox don't really know how or if he fits but they at least want to see if his vision and his ability to hit big time are for real.
  8. Brentz and Barfield may not be answers to a power shortage but when you need power and they have hit for power considering them a problem is just ridiculous. I'll disagree with anyone when they start preaching that 29 and 30 year olds are old. If they are outhitting younger players, maybe they have earned the job. it isn't about age. It is about production.
  9. In Brentz's case I would lean toward agreement with you but no way would I with respect to Barfield. I do not agree with you at all with respect to him. I also would be kind of surprised if every organization could point to two guys who enjoyed that kind of power success last year. It is the common sense logical route to say that they are both too old and have already reached their potential limits. Every now and then, someone throws a wrench into the works. The Red Sox certainly haven't given up on Barfield.
  10. In the Xander Bogaerts article that I just read, he sounds like he gets it. He readily acknowledged that things were definitely up and down in a number of different ways for the team last year. His feeling is that it probably is time for everyone to say goodbye to the past and focus on this year. It is good advise and shows a little leadership.
  11. I really don't think that the Sox can afford to allow any potential power hitters to get away. That would include Bryce Brentz as well as a very interesting Jeremy Barfield
  12. I can't find anything to disagree with you about here. What am I to do? It has been a bit of a boring off season. oh - I also agree with you about Papi too.
  13. If he is healthy, Nunez coming back is a very good thing.
  14. I couldn't agree more.
  15. I do agree with you for the most part. The Pedroia thing may have just been a lack of judgement. Sadly we all witnessed it and it really did not look to me as though he was very supportive of his teammates. I think that he plays hard and when healthy I can't think of anyone else I had rather see out there. That is certainly worthy of being considered a leader. He gets there early and stays late. He lives and breathes the game and plays it the right way. I truly wish that he could have shut his mouth. In my estimation, that was not my idea of leadership.
  16. Now you all know how I feel about Sale and leadership. He is a leader. If one of the criteria in some minds, is standing up for your teammates, I have a hard time digesting the venom toward David Price displayed. I didn't like what he did anymore than anyone else here but unless I really missed something, part of his attack on Eck was his idea of standing up for his teammates based on some of the things Eck had said. It might have been inappropriate but I'm going to be pulling for this potential ace big time. Much more so than I will be for Pedroia.
  17. For the record - I am a true big league fan of Chris Sale. The way he looked, acted, and played this year screams leader to me. Now, when it comes to him cutting up the unis and going nuts over LaRoche thing, not so much. I'll give him a pass though because there was nothing that looked juvenile whatsoever about him when he came to Boston. He sounds even better and more committed than he did last year!
  18. Hey jad - crap happens! Give the guy a break and lets see what happens. He still can throw the ball and he is going to be here for a number of years. We need his arm to get it done.
  19. I don't believe that I ever have said that mental toughness is the same thing as leadership. Some of the most mentally tough people that I have ever known were lousy leaders. I think that it is fairly clear that we approach most things athletic from a different perspective. It's ok. There is room for both of us.
  20. Here we go again right Notin. Is it possible that your concept of being mentally tough is different from mine? I think that is quite likely. Prove to me Notin and to all of the others who have coached and played who believe in the reality that all of these intangible things that are so important to athletic success don't exist. This really is a waste of time don't you think? We could do this dance forever.
  21. How about them Boxers!!!
  22. I really don't think that it is about one player leading a team to the promised land. That would be ridiculous. It is a culture of change that happens because a group of good leaders believe that it needs to be changed. 93 wins means a lot. i agree but it isn't enough for me I guess. I don't agree with anyone here who doesn't think that good leadership is incredibly important. it has been called a 'straw man' arguement because it isn't quantifiable and that is all well and good. there are some things that just can't be explained or quantified. I'm ok with everyone who disagrees with me about this too.
  23. Oh come on - stop that Nick - most of the time I'm with you! Also, maybe JD is a leader. As a matter of fact, i think that he is. What I don't think is that he wants to play for us.
