  1. Although the article did say 100 million there was still some reference to it possibly going as high as 135-150. We don't know for sure at all what is currently being negotiated. You taking the field against the Sox - me taking the Sox against the field but I am not sure that that is what I want to see happen.
  2. I don't necessarily think that my comment was backward at all. I still feel that if Martinez had an offer on the table that was higher than the Red Sox offer he would already be signed. I might not have stated clearly what I meant to say. My guess is that if he waits too long, there is a chance that Boston moves away from him. If that is the case, my bet is that he signs for less. I realize that this is all about business but it is starting to be a turn off for me. I don't care if he comes or not at this point.
  3. You might be right but if there is another team that swoops in to get JD I bet he winds up being paid less than he would be in Boston. It would be hard for me to believe that there is somebody out there who is topping the offer made by the Sox. if that were the case, I think that he would have already signed with someone else.
  4. Arizona - Boston - the end unless someone grabs him for less than is currently be offered due to someone dropping out of the bidding war games
  5. Great great memories - Mine were limited to listening the games in the pantry of our old kitchen up here in Maine. Mom and I - lifelong fans. Johnny Most - high above court side. Used to try to sound like him - tough to do.
  6. He just can't win here I guess! Thanks Ben LOL!!! I don't think he cares what we think. Good for him.
  7. Well Celtic fans, what would you be willing to give up for Anthony Davis? What would Red have done?
  8. Me as well - I'll say again as you know I have said many times before, the concept of what the word budget means to me (and I'm doing ok) and what it means to a billionaire is something that I can not fathom. I am not concerned at all whether or not there are any financial thresholds that JH decides to stay under. If it is just about money and JH wants someone he is likely to get them. And that is real capitalism.
  9. I know that he made some of his billionaire or thereabouts in the market for sure. I'm pretty sure that you aren't suggesting that since his parents were soybean farmers he came from humble beginnings. Big agi can produce lots of $.
  10. You might be wrong. It is all very relative. If a billionaire spends 10000 on something seemingly stupid to you and me does that make it a stupid move? I'm also fairly sure that the majority of billionaires did not start from scratch.
  11. "fiscal sanity" to a billionaire - yikes.
  12. come on what's it gonna be boy? Arizona or Boston
  13. ... and he could leap tall buildings in a single bound!
  14. I'm really not sure that I am even trying to make a point but if I were to make one it would be that in the northeast whenever I go anywhere i can see tremendous signs of wealth. Of course both sides of this spectrum get pretty well covered - I get that but I really disagree with the folks who see any big cataclysmic financial downfall on the horizon. There will continue to be ups and downs as there have always been but I don't see the clock getting turned back anytime soon. Entertainment is big business, I just wish that the entertainers would just do what they are paid to do - that's it. As for the colleges - sorry but any Division 3 school with over a billion dollars worth of endowment funds kicking around has a lot more coming in (maybe too much) then they are paying out. The rich do tend to continue to get richer.
  15. Thank you -
  16. I have a daughter that attended one of those division 3 schools. Admission, parking, and free seats should be provided based on how much it costs to attend many of these schools. Check out the endowments of some of these more prestigious div. 3 schools. Billions of dollars. I'm not sure that there are free rides anywhere.
  17. and i would also add that they are fairly rich - pretty relative I guess but ml salaries seem pretty good to me.
  18. I have said this many times here. Think about the profit JH makes if and when he sells.
  19. Should I think is the key word here for me. I don't think that many of us really understand all of the ins and outs of what it takes to run a ml franchise. I think that the short answer is yes - that is the way it works in our society. Otherwise why would anyone want to own? Business owners in general I don't think own simply for the betterment of society.
  20. In what professional sport would this not be true? If you own the team, and manage it correctly, aren't you supposed to make money? It would be another story altogether if the players were not compensated fairly but I think that they are.
  21. MVP likes to have a little fun which is never a bad thing. I grew up watching Ted and I still believe that he was the greatest hitter that I have ever seen. Great fisherman, and fighter pilot as well.
  22. Kimmi - How many years do you think a player needs to play in order to establish a meaningful mean?
  23. Really - Talksox - Red Sox forum - I missed the part about being nice to Yankee fans when I registered. lol
  24. So I could probably just say that based on their past averages it is possible and maybe even likely that guys like Bogaerts and Betts should have better years obviously depending on their health or do I have to use the new language like positive regression and stuff like that?
  25. Kind of sound like JD is willing to hold out for that sixth year. Arizona was mentioned as another suitor which makes sense.
