  1. And notin please don't try to turn what I am saying into something that it isn't. I'm not pounding the drum thinking that either of these two guys will ever make it. I would really like to find out though.
  2. I think that you are making too much of a big deal out of the age factor. We have someone finally doing something pretty good and doing something that we really need. You are trying to convince me that this guy isn't at least worth another look ? We do not know what Brentz or Barfield might bring to the table. I'm pretty sure that unless Holt and the rest of his look alikes morph into physical specimens all of a sudden, we have a pretty good idea that they will bring something we already have in abundance. As for your comment about potential injuries, Im just assuming that you are making a joke because you do sound smarter than that. They all run this risk.
  3. I do think that the option makes a difference . In terms of simple talent and what a player might be able to give you that you are lacking, it would be Brentz for me all the way. We have plenty of guys here who if they looked like Holt they could be mistaken for him. I care not that his best efforts have come at the AAA level.
  4. With better and of course younger options (you like that) to do the very same things that Holt has done, why do you think anyone would consider keeping a light hitting Holt over someone that actually might bring something to the table that could help the team? My answer would be that people are affected by the loyalty factor here more than anything else.
  5. I'm going to hold the line on my thinking here. I think that as a team they over achieved last year. I just do not think that our position players are as good as many here believe. Since we have some youngsters, things could change for sure. 93 wins form this group in my opinion was fantastic. Speaks highly for the pitching staff more than anything else. Like you, I was not upset with Farrell being let go and it will be nice to see a fresh face in there. Maybe Alex Cora does know how to deal with younger developing players better than Farrell but if people think that that might happen simply because he is closer in age to members of this team, I think that they are wrong. I hope that it does not work against him.
  6. Mookie certainly could have been talking about himself as well as the rest of his teammates which would also include the entire coaching staff. Remember though that we have learned that as fans we don't really have a clue what is taking place in that dugout. Just a touch of sarcasm there. I'm ready to look ahead. I hope that hiring Cora will help but I really have to wait and see. I would be surprised if it did. Actually, I wonder what would have helped more - Mookie having a better year or Farrell having a better year. My vote goes to Mookie.
  7. Wait - it just came to me - maybe you are blaming Pedroia for being injured! There you go. That makes sense. He isn't much of a leader but he can certainly play.
  8. Oh - ok - sorry my mistake. You want to blame Farrell that is fine. I'm going on the side of blaming no one. I'm sure that it is hard for some people to accept but Farrell did do some good things.
  9. I'm assuming that you also mean blaming it all on Farrell is also unfair. Some here have suggested that leadership doesn't really play much of a role. If that is the case, the failure to be properly prepared for the playoffs lies directly on the shoulders of the boys making the big bucks. I know how important strong leadership is so obviously I don't believe for one minute what I just said.
  10. I don't disagree with you much here notin. I guess that we are all fans and probably aren't privy to what goes on day to day in that dugout. The but here is that this is a talksox forum in a very slow off season and it is a forum made up of some well educated baseball fans. I love hearing and sharing opinions. As wrong as most of them are if they don't agree with me, I hope that they never stop giving them. leadership in general with respect to most organizations is very important and it can and should come from more than one person. What I really believe though is that we need to cut these guys some slack. It is a new year. As much as people were worked up over the Price Eck incident, I'm still not sure that he did anything wrong. I did not like what Pedroia said.
  11. He says that this year really was the first time that he was able to see. I'm really pulling for him and I don't care what notin says.
  12. I would consider that productive and maybe to good to just let go.
  13. I do not agree with you that their ships have sailed. I'm pretty sure notin (lol) that I understand that there is difference between minor league and major league pitching. I admit that they are both long shots. I'm really not sure that Chavis is going to be a better option either though. Now as for your chance of making this team being equal to that of Barfield's, I get the fact that you have a high opinion of yourself (that's a joke notin) but I guess I would have to bet on Barfield's being a little better than yours and I don't even know you.
  14. I'm on your wave length most of the time and that should make you nervous since I am an old guy not getting younger. Which could only mean ...
  15. I'll also add that if Brentz is released it should be obvious that someone is going to grab him quickly. I would not be surprised at all if he becomes a productive ml hitter with plenty of pop. I will be pulling for him to finally get a real chance with either us or more likely someone else.
  16. I'm really not advocating for either one of them. The point that I am making is that if you have a needed skill - such as the ability to whack the ball out of the park - an organization is not going to hurry to let you go. Brentz very well might fall victim to the numbers game based on who gets signed. There was a time that I truly felt that Marrero was our ss of the future - not now. He has really shown very little at the plate. If Brentz is kept, obviously he is going to get his chance. 29 or 30 is not a factor if either one of these two guys hits for power better than anyone else that we have in the minors. I really don't know who the best option is. I don't think anyone should be saying that Chavis is for sure a better option at this point than either Brentz or Barfileld. Barfield was invited to camp this spring for a reason. The Red Sox don't really know how or if he fits but they at least want to see if his vision and his ability to hit big time are for real.
  17. Brentz and Barfield may not be answers to a power shortage but when you need power and they have hit for power considering them a problem is just ridiculous. I'll disagree with anyone when they start preaching that 29 and 30 year olds are old. If they are outhitting younger players, maybe they have earned the job. it isn't about age. It is about production.
  18. In Brentz's case I would lean toward agreement with you but no way would I with respect to Barfield. I do not agree with you at all with respect to him. I also would be kind of surprised if every organization could point to two guys who enjoyed that kind of power success last year. It is the common sense logical route to say that they are both too old and have already reached their potential limits. Every now and then, someone throws a wrench into the works. The Red Sox certainly haven't given up on Barfield.
  19. In the Xander Bogaerts article that I just read, he sounds like he gets it. He readily acknowledged that things were definitely up and down in a number of different ways for the team last year. His feeling is that it probably is time for everyone to say goodbye to the past and focus on this year. It is good advise and shows a little leadership.
  20. I really don't think that the Sox can afford to allow any potential power hitters to get away. That would include Bryce Brentz as well as a very interesting Jeremy Barfield
  21. I can't find anything to disagree with you about here. What am I to do? It has been a bit of a boring off season. oh - I also agree with you about Papi too.
  22. If he is healthy, Nunez coming back is a very good thing.
  23. I couldn't agree more.
  24. I do agree with you for the most part. The Pedroia thing may have just been a lack of judgement. Sadly we all witnessed it and it really did not look to me as though he was very supportive of his teammates. I think that he plays hard and when healthy I can't think of anyone else I had rather see out there. That is certainly worthy of being considered a leader. He gets there early and stays late. He lives and breathes the game and plays it the right way. I truly wish that he could have shut his mouth. In my estimation, that was not my idea of leadership.
