  1. Now you all know how I feel about Sale and leadership. He is a leader. If one of the criteria in some minds, is standing up for your teammates, I have a hard time digesting the venom toward David Price displayed. I didn't like what he did anymore than anyone else here but unless I really missed something, part of his attack on Eck was his idea of standing up for his teammates based on some of the things Eck had said. It might have been inappropriate but I'm going to be pulling for this potential ace big time. Much more so than I will be for Pedroia.
  2. For the record - I am a true big league fan of Chris Sale. The way he looked, acted, and played this year screams leader to me. Now, when it comes to him cutting up the unis and going nuts over LaRoche thing, not so much. I'll give him a pass though because there was nothing that looked juvenile whatsoever about him when he came to Boston. He sounds even better and more committed than he did last year!
  3. Hey jad - crap happens! Give the guy a break and lets see what happens. He still can throw the ball and he is going to be here for a number of years. We need his arm to get it done.
  4. I don't believe that I ever have said that mental toughness is the same thing as leadership. Some of the most mentally tough people that I have ever known were lousy leaders. I think that it is fairly clear that we approach most things athletic from a different perspective. It's ok. There is room for both of us.
  5. Here we go again right Notin. Is it possible that your concept of being mentally tough is different from mine? I think that is quite likely. Prove to me Notin and to all of the others who have coached and played who believe in the reality that all of these intangible things that are so important to athletic success don't exist. This really is a waste of time don't you think? We could do this dance forever.
  6. How about them Boxers!!!
  7. I really don't think that it is about one player leading a team to the promised land. That would be ridiculous. It is a culture of change that happens because a group of good leaders believe that it needs to be changed. 93 wins means a lot. i agree but it isn't enough for me I guess. I don't agree with anyone here who doesn't think that good leadership is incredibly important. it has been called a 'straw man' arguement because it isn't quantifiable and that is all well and good. there are some things that just can't be explained or quantified. I'm ok with everyone who disagrees with me about this too.
  8. Oh come on - stop that Nick - most of the time I'm with you! Also, maybe JD is a leader. As a matter of fact, i think that he is. What I don't think is that he wants to play for us.
  9. yes - you are right - If you had a team compiled of statistical leaders at every position and I had a normal team, there is no way I could beat you. It would make no difference if I had grittier, tougher, dirt doggier players who were all great leaders. You win - you sure got me good.
  10. When it comes to comparing the east with the west, I am always reminded of this little dialogue on the Senate floor many years ago when a proud Senator from the State California made this proclamation about the great symbol of our country. "and here's to the American eagle, that wonderful bird of fame, who builds his nest in the far far west and shits in the state of Maine". Upon hearing this the Senator from the great State of Maine slowly rose to his feet and exclaimed "and here's to the State Of Maine, who's soil is fertile and rich, we don't need the turd from your damned old bird you red headed son of a bitch". This really didn't happen but I do think I am safe in saying that New Englanders in general are quite proud of where they are from.
  11. Ok you sure got me here. If I had a statistical leader at every position, I could easily get rid of a few *******s and still kick everybody's ass. I wish just once in my life I could have been associated with a team of such dominance.
  12. Come on notin - Not everything in the world has to be supported by ******** statistics. There are actually people on here who don't think that it is necessary for the Sox to do anything and they will still be ok. I don't really give a fiddler's fart what you or anybody else thinks about the importance of leadership and team identity or any of the other mysterious things that can't be defined in the universe. I played - I coached more - therefore I believe in these things very much. A person's mental approach to the game may be much more important to what they can produce on the field than their physical attributes. You can doubt all of this good s*** all you want. It seems that you are in good company here to. Looks to me like having the home field advantage.
  13. I call ******** here - you live in a rain forest lol
  14. Is the west coast representative of the rest of the country in anyway?
  15. As a spectator watching the game, I agree. As a player or a coach who has to deal with an ass hole day in and day out, I disagree. If being deep into weeds is believing that mental components might be more important to a team than physical ones, I am hanging out in the proverbial weed patch. It is always tough to understand how important something is when you just can't measure it.
  16. Times certainly have changed for sure. I do think that there is more interest in UCONN women's bb than there is women's professional bb. I'm not sure the Northeast has been all that much of a competitor with warmer climate bb teams at the collegiate level ever. The nature of the beast. Soccer is a great game but the amount of interest in it might have something to do with geography as well as many recent studies discussing the physical and mental that football can easily cause.
  17. I really don't think that good leadership can be taken for granted at all regardless of how many wins or losses a team may have throughout the course of a long season. We use the term leader sometimes as though one person can provide what it takes to an entire group of adults. Good leadership comes from a team that is primarily made up of good people willing to sacrifice individual goals for the greater good of the team in general. I agree that good leadership can start with a good manager. I hope that Alex Cora can provide what it takes. I know that there are a number of posters here who think that his age being closer to that of his players could make a big difference. I don't share that view. I don't think that his age means anything at all. Regardless of his age, he is the boss and the boss isn't always going to be making the popular decisions. I wish him the best of luck.
  18. And you know too that women's bb begins and ends in the east -UCONN lol
  19. I like this post - it suits me good
  20. Actually I think that there is a lick of sense here in what you say.
  21. No one is going to feel sorry for us though my friend. Regardless of how things look right now, we have the greatest sports franchises overall in the country right here in New England.. It's a very lucky athlete who gets to play here and an even luckier one who gets to retire as a member of one of our great teams. Things will all workout.
  22. fair post
  23. Watching Paul Pierce being honored. Being a Celtic = one of the most special things in all of sports.
  24. My oh my what a beat down.
