No, that's not what I meant. I meant IF he was great in 2016 and 2017 and sucked after that, we would have been happy to get rid of him, too. He was more like disappointing and tantalizing for 4 years.

Unless those two seasons were 2016-2017, I suppose. All things considered, shedding $15 million of his AAV the next two years is good for us. For the Dodgers, if they get two good years, or even one very good one, it'll be a nice little bonus for them.

Yeah, I don't even like the idea of winning the WS as a goal. I agree that winning 85+ games and being in the hunt in September would be a fine goal.

I think they could too. Let's face it, sometimes it depends on a lot of luck. In 2013, guys like Victorino, Napoli and Drew performed like Supermen, only to turn back into Clark Kents the next year. 2020's list of asks for great luck might look like this: 1) E-Rod 2) Eovaldi 3) Sale 4) Houck All of the above outperform expectations. 5) Chaim Bloom pulls off a few minor miracles in upgrades the next few months. 6) Raffy Devers is so excited by the return of Cora that he puts up a 7 WAR season. And so forth.

I think that part of the trade was kind of a wash. I'm not thrilled about it and I'm not terribly disappointed about it. If Price stays healthy and pitches well the next two years, it'll look pretty good for the Dodgers.

We actually scored more runs in '19 than we did in '18, amazingly enough.

And Cora really did push the starting pitchers that postseason, using them in relief appearances to bolster the bullpen. It worked great, but it had to take a toll.

So how do you explain the disappointing results in 2019?

Well, I was feeling pretty good at the start of 2019, and the season was certainly a bit of a shock. Maybe you can attribute some of it to the 'hangover' effect. When a team goes all out and reaches their goal, a letdown can follow. Needless to say, Cora was criticized for how he handled spring training and the start of the season. I liked the Eovaldi and Pearce signings, but they were total writeoffs. We didn't know about Sale's health, and it turned out that all fears were justified. I think that was a huge factor, losing a guy that good and such a great competitor. I think you can chalk most of it up to two words - S**t happens.

It's very hard to repeat in MLB, hasn't happened in the last 20 years. It's easy to see in hindsight that when we won in 2018 we were at the end of our window. We were maxed out payroll-wise. Our ace was pitching with a damaged arm. Porcello was about at the end of his good years, and Price's durability was iffy. Plus we had no good young pitching ready in the system.

Yeah, you already schooled me a bit that it was the bullpen that was actually our problem that year. It was just a gut reaction of horror on my part, going into the season with Porcello/Buchholz/Kelly/Miley/Masterson. I had very little confidence in any of them.

Between Ben and DD, the only thing that either one of them ever did that I disliked a lot at the time was Ben's construction of the 2015 pitching staff.

And I'm sure that when Henry hired DD in 2015, his plan wasn't to can him in 2019 and replace him with a guy like Bloom. But if that HAD been the plan, it wouldn't have been a bad one. We're lucky it worked out this way IMHO

But it's pretty hard to deny that when Henry brought DD aboard, he knew he was going to get the “win now and f*** tomorrow” approach.

I fail to see how Desperate Dave "pales against" Coffee Boy LOL I think it's a wash, personally. Ben gets bashed for the last place finishes, DD gets bashed for decimating the farm. Neither gets better or worse treatment.

It could, but hopefully it doesn't, because Houck is in the rotation.

This feels a lot like a political debate, and it's hard to be unbiased in such things. IMHO Larry's verbal disparagement of DD is worse, because he never calls him anything but Desperate Dave. 700hitter did say some complimentary things about Ben. He said he was a stand-up guy in his dealings with the press. And the 'coffee boy' stuff, I think, got started when others suggested it was Lucchino who was responsible for some of the bad signings.
