  1. Unfortunately it's not just the Rays who are all-in on analytics and 'creative pitching management'. Dave Roberts pulled Kershaw in Game 5 after he retired the first 2 hitters of the inning on 2 pitches! And the Dodgers won Game 6 and the World Series with a bullpen game in which they used 7 pitchers, including starting pitchers as an "opener" and as the closer! Yuck.
  2. Yeah. Alex Speier's take was that pulling Snell was defensible, but replacing him with Anderson was not.
  3. Also, the guy Cash brought in to replace Snell, Nick Anderson, had given up runs in his last 6 appearances. Make that 7. Another wow.
  4. Cash is being excoriated for taking Snell out when he did. He didn't want Snell to face any Dodger hitters for a third time. But the top 4 in the Dodgers lineup were 0-8 with 7 K's. Wow. Dave Roberts, of course, also raised a lot of eyebrows when he pulled Kershaw after retiring the first 2 batters of the inning, on 2 pitches. These moves were pre-planned. Is this analytics gone mad?
  5. 1. Didn't want them to win, but the Dodgers are worthy champs. 2. Much better than Yankees winning. 3. We'll get our noses rubbed in it some more about Mookie, especially by the bozo writers, but that's the life of a sports fan.
  6. Fine post, oldtimer. "Snell had handle Mookie and Seager like no other Rays pitcher", you said. That was what bothered me about the move. Mookie has been struggling against lefties in general, too.
  7. And after Seager will be Bellinger. It just means that's it very difficult to keep a bunch of stars on your team. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
  8. Gone-solin.
  9. Agreed, although the job needed to be finished, and it was done so in style. But I would say that the end of Game 7 of that ALCS was the greatest moment in franchise history. I love watching the end of that game and the guys in the dugout getting ready to run onto the field.
  10. A great occasion. And who would have thought we'd win 3 more after that? We should all be grateful.
  11. Based on this list, the contracts for pitchers probably worked out overall about as well as the ones for position players.
  12. Manny's is one of the rare contracts of that length that was an unqualified success.
  13. Pujols fWAR starting at age 36 season 2016 +0.8 2017 -2.0 2018 -0.2 2019 -0.4 2020 -0.1 Total -1.9 Worse than replacement level.
  14. If his reputation is so bad, teams wouldn't be interested in him. Anyway, we'll see if he gets what he wants.
  15. I'm sure the Angels thought the same about Pujols.
  16. When I pointed out that the difference between Price and Betts was 2 years instead of the 4 you've been quoting, you dismissed it and deflected to the "But Price is a pitcher" argument.
  17. Again, it would be 1 and 6 for Price, since he was 30 at the start of 2016.
  18. I'm not surprised he wants full autonomy. I'm assuming guys like Epstein and Friedman have it.
  19. So all pitchers are injury-prone. Maybe we should stay away from them altogether.
  20. That's kind of scary right there. You're paying for 9 post-prime years.
  21. You're using fuzzy math. Price's birthday is August 26. Mookie's is October 7. That's a difference of only 42 days, but you're making it into a full year. Might as well use exact ages down to the days, if you're going to do a fair comparison. Edit: Or you can just use the same method Baseball-Reference uses, the player's age at the start of the season. That makes Price's 2016 season his age 30 season, and Mookie's 2021 season his age 28 season. 2 years difference.
  22. Would you be surprised to find that your math is actually off by about two years? Price TURNED 31 in August of the first season of his 7 year contract. Mookie TURNS 29 in October of the first year of his 12 year contract.
  23. I've been saying pretty much the same thing. With a 12 year contract you've got the risk of an unexpected performance decline and you've got the risk of injury. With a player of Mookie's profile, you can handle the risk of performance decline. But the risk of injury makes a 12 year contract totally insane. And the Red Sox say they don't buy insurance on contracts because the premiums are exorbitant - which is hardly a surprise.
  24. It is a little strange how much time we spent dissecting past GM's and their moves. But it's something to jabber and debate and argue about. Even if at a certain point we're just saying the same things over and over.
