  1. FWIW, Baseball-Reference's current projections say the Red Sox only have a 23% chance of making the playoffs, while the Yankees are at 68%.
  2. The decision on when to pull the starter is probably the toughest one a manager has to make. And all the data in the world doesn't guarantee you're going to make the right one. Just ask Kevin Cash.
  3. And you're not going to win many when you score 1 run. The Baltimore pitchers were obviously on their games last night.
  4. Yeah, that's a good point. It's not just that the ball doesn't travel as far, it's that the pitchers are able to spin it more.
  5. You don't think Cora is a good manager. Most Sox fans think he is. It's just the way it is. Fans often disagree about managers and their moves. I disagree with you about Cora, but it doesn't mean I don't think you're a knowledgeable baseball fan. You are. With regard to pulling Perez, this is the way Baseball 101 is now. The 3-4-5 hitters were due up for the Birds, for the third time, and they're all righty hitters. And "pulling him if anyone gets on" isn't really a great strategy in a tie game, is it? If the first guy homers we lose anyway. It's all just opinions though.
  6. Except we should be looking at OPS+, especially this year.
  7. They have no value whatsoever, other than as fodder for discussion.
  8. I keep telling my boss that's what I'm doing...
  9. Heyday is a funny word LOL
  10. Bobby Poyner! Forgot he existed. He had some decent numbers in 2018.
  11. Any examples in mind?
  12. And everybody knows all this. It's a simple concept.
  13. The prevailing wisdom I've heard seems to be that defenses would actually love it if guys like Big Papi tried to bunt a lot more.
  14. I have no idea exactly how the discussions went. I suspect the medical people involved couldn't absolutely say that surgery was required or was the best option.
  15. Yeah, baseball is still pretty awesome, especially compared to just about everything else in the world.
  16. Pitching can overcome a lot, though.
  17. The team couldn't force him to have the surgery.
  18. I really think the shifts are what created the mess. And as much as we like to talk about beating the shift by going oppo a lot more, very few hitters are capable of doing it. Verdugo can, LeMahieu can. Not many. We used to love it when Big Papi dropped a bunt on the shift. But how many times did he actually do it? You can count them on one hand, I think. His response was generally the same as most guys with power - hit it over the shift or over the fence.
  19. If you look at runs scored as the measure of offense, it's not the worst since 1968, in fact there have been many years that runs per game were lower than the current 2021 average of 4.36. What we're really talking about is the brand of offense we're seeing.
  20. 4.36 so far this year.
  21. Yes, we all have our confirmation biases.
  22. I think we can all agree there are two clear-cut candidates for demotion: Cordero and Brice.
  23. Worst case scenario, it's a precursor to Tommy John. FWIW Cora says this isn't serious. We'll see.
