    You're correct. I was also including the KC game we won 7-6, where he came in for Pivetta. It was close, but not late and close.

    I agree, and I think in the John Henry era our GM's have generally done an excellent job with deadline deals. There's never really been one that made you tear your hair out later. The Gagne trade was a horrendous disappointment, but it didn't really hurt us much when all was said and done.

    Yeah, the only surprising thing is that they've used him in some late/close situations recently.

    Rios is a puzzler, but they must have seen something they liked, or that could be improved.

    It's not that simple. There was no certainty the Dodgers would extend Mookie, but there was certainly an opportunity given to them.

    What I would argue is that they traded the rights to negotiate an extension with Mookie. But you can look at it however you want, really.

    He pitched great in April. Maybe a little rest and a tweak gets him pitching well again. Our management knows what they're doing.

    To me the bottom line on Andriese is that 2.1 million of guaranteed money makes him rather disposable. No torches and pitchforks for Bloom on that kind of risk.

    If they had thoughts of making a strong play, trading him to the Dodgers risked losing the chance, which is exactly what happened. We did have some people on the forum advocating trading him, re-setting the tax, and then signing him as a free agent. But they totally ignored this possibility.

    I don't know, maybe it's good that baseball isn't exactly like football...not quite as much of a meat market, so to speak.

    Yeah, that's a pretty nice combo package.

    It's a feature. It's not something you can just dismiss. The Dodgers were in perfect position to lock Mookie up, and I do believe that had a lot to do with why they made the trade and gave up a guy like Verdugo. Now if you assume that the Red Sox were saying goodbye with the trade, and had no thoughts whatsoever of bidding on Mookie in free agency, all of that meant nothing to them.

    So true. I'm very much a “call me when they’re in Boston” guy. But having the #4 pick is a big deal for sure.

    You draftniks are amazing. Every time I think of myself as an obsessive baseball nerd, I come to this thread and realize I'm the equivalent of a bench player compared to some others.

    But the $8.4 million secures the player's rights for X number of seasons, doesn't it?

    I haven't seen one of these for a while, but we used to see trades where the acquiring team was given a 48 hour window or something like that to sign an extension with the player. In this case the Dodgers got a much longer window, you might say. It seems pretty obvious that a big part of why they made the trade was that they figured they could keep him.

    Yeah, I think I might e-mail Cot's Contracts about the AAV thing. Spotrac shows it as 25.55.

    Think about it. The Red Sox offer of 10/300 (AAV of 30) has been characterized as a starting bid, some even call it a lowball offer. The Dodgers got him for 6.5 million more than that in present dollars, and an AAV that's 4.45 million lower than that.

    As always, you have to look at what the selling teams would be interested in. Which selling teams have a good late inning reliever whose contract is expiring at the end of the year, for starters.
