    The Jays looked scary when they shelled us in Games 2 and 3 of the last series. Since then they've lost 3 in a row and are back to .500. This is one crazy freaking game.

    The problem is that everyone inside the game knew that pitchers were using sticky stuff for a long time. What happened is that the sticky stuff science got a little too good. That's when Manfred decided something had to be done. Also worth noting that they changed the baseballs again this year, which seems to have also increased the spin rates. Attaboy, Rob! I wouldn't be surprised if what we end up with is some sort of pre-approved lower-tech sticky stuff. In the meantime, it's a fustercluck.

    I have to say I was impressed with Chapnan in this one. Second and third no out, it looked like he was going to blow another one, but he kept his cool, and was even smiling after the play Vlad got thrown out on.

    Information is one thing. Seeing live pitches is another. I think it's a credible reason that some guys don't like hitting leadoff.

    Another tidbit on leadoff hitters. The pesky Rays have climbed to 7th in runs scored in MLB. Their manager Cash is probably one of the stat-nerdiest of all managers. In recent games his leadoff hitter has been Margot, who has an OBP of .283.

    Well, the sequence of the order never changes, obviously. But statistically speaking, I can't answer it. I know that Kimmi has read all the research on lineups, and the big takeaway is that aside from having your best hitters in the top part of the lineup, the most important thing is having guys in the spots they're comfortable in. Psychological stuff, I guess. I remember one year when Ellsbury was struggling, Tito tried Pedroia and Drew at leadoff. They both stunk and both said they hated it. It was a little weird, but that's the way it was.

    On pure math, it's been shown that your best hitter should hit second, and you should not have one of your best hitters hitting third. Managers obviously do not buy into the pure math. I can't fully explain the decision-making, but I trust Cora. He is with these guys and talking to them every day.

    He's a complete player who has won games every way you can on a field. You don't find many of those.

    I've been thinking about this. I believe that Cora strongly wants our 4 studs hitting in a row. But he doesn't like the idea of them hitting 1-4, because that makes the lineup even more top-heavy than it is now. The problem is that we don't have a suitable leadoff hitter. Verdugo could be one, sure, but Cora may be right that's he an even better #2 hitter.

    It was great work by Bloom, I think we can say that already. There were some who thought we might not get back a huge package because it was only one year of control at a cost of 27 million. It was a salary dump.
