  1. It kind of feels like the Rays could bring in 14 random guys off the street and turn them into a good pitching staff.
  2. When we were talking about this before, I think we figured out that the only time in history a team in contention at the deadline traded a significant player was when the Rays traded Kazmir.
  3. Man, I can't wait to see the reaction of Red Sox Nation and media if he trades Barnes at the deadline. It's true that it would kind of suck to let him go for nothing. But not as much as throwing in the towel on a season. Unless we flounder bigly between now and then (which is certainly possible), it would be a stunning decision.
  4. Anyway we're not missing much with Beni. fWAR 0.5 bWAR 1.0 currently on IL
  5. Or they just hung onto the money, depending on how you look at it.
  6. We often evaluate trades of prospects in hindsight.
  7. Kimbrel has had an outstanding career, with some bumps along the way, like so many other players. He has to be one of the top 5 or so relievers in history.
  8. I'm afraid that COVID has made people in general a little nuttier.
  9. Let's not even talk about that until about a month from now.
  10. More. But in this case, I would argue that Kimbrel's remaining contract was just about perfect for a closer (2 years plus a team option). And it worked out that way. Personally, I think the fairest way to look at it is what Kimbrel would have gotten if he was a free agent that offseason. What do you think that would have been?
  11. Sure. And Mookie Betts was salary-dumped by us, with one year of control and a $27 million salary. And yet he commanded a high return. I don't really see your point.
  12. I don't see how the fact that Kimbrel was salary-dumped by Atlanta has any bearing on his market value at the time we traded for him.
  13. The contract we assumed on Kimbrel had 2 more years guaranteed for a total of $24 mill, plus a team option for one year at $13 mill. That was a very favorable contract. How much would he have gotten if he was a free agent instead? Papelbon got $50 million after the 2011 season. Chapman got $86 million and Jansen got $80 million after the 2016 season. I would guess Kimbrel could have gotten maybe $70 mill as a free agent.
  14. Nope, not a double whammy. Contract was good.
  15. It does seem like contradictory points.
  16. What if they all love the spots they're in? I thought player comfort trumped other considerations. I'm confoozed.
  17. I still disagree on the first point, but I understand the opposing view. But I do agree about Richards. He sounds beaten. Maybe he should retire immediately.
  18. Not sure why Cordero will profit from the crackdown more than other hitters, though.
  19. $2.5 mill. Damn, that is a pretty sweet deal. I assume health concerns were why Bloom steered away from him, but right now, yeah, that was a missed opportunity. Hill knows how to pitch.
  20. moon is correct. The AAV is pro-rated when a player is traded in-season.
  21. Ah yes, the dreaded Cavalry/Calvary mixup.
  22. Yes, all the more reason to be pissed at Manfred. He controls the baseballs, and look where we are.
  23. I know it's not much consolation, but apparently Cora was hoping to pencil Arroyo into leadoff last night, Arroyo couldn't go. As for Santana, and Cordero, well, yeah, Bloom is the guy who acquired these guys to play for us. The bad with the good. I do get the frustration, I just don't think it's Cora's fault.
  24. Sawamura says the MLB baseballs are less tacky than the ones used in Japan, and that MLB should consider a tackier ball as the solution to this issue. Can't really count on Manfred for solutions, though.
  25. I think spin rate came into the lexicon around the same time as launch angle and exit velocity. Not really a fan of any of them, myself.
