  1. Yes, I think that in general Cora has done a fine job with the pitching changes all year. It's one of his strengths as a manager.
  2. Anyone who is really paying attention sees that Bloom spent just enough to put us about $5 mill under the first tax threshold, presumably leaving that for the deadline. And by doing so, in spite of all our issues, payroll and otherwise, he managed to assemble a contending team. The rest is just noise, really.
  3. Rocker must be the king of catching 'em looking!
  4. Except he's not batting 1st any more.
  5. It was a mild overpay at most. Kike has averaged about 2.5 bWAR per 150 games over his career. He's at 0.9 bWAR right now this year. People are really starting to expect a lot for 7 mill a year, I guess...
  6. Somehow I doubt that Chaim Bloom went to Alex Cora asking him who to sign. Kike was virtually full time for the Dodgers his last 3 seasons with them. Let's not distort the truth for the sake of making a point.
  7. Think you may have missed the other posts about Richards, including the one right above yours.
  8. When you talked about trading Barnes even if we're in the hunt, now that was bordering on nonsensical.
  9. Career-ending injuries are a bitch.
  10. I know that notin. My only point all along has been that Kimbrel's contract was a relative bargain. It was not a 'double whammy'. As mvp says, it was a mild overpay.
  11. As I keep asking, what would Kimbrel have gotten if he WAS a free agent that offseason. Based on what we know, it would have been around 70 million. The previous big contract for a closer was Paps at 50 million after 2011. My estimate is a totally fair one.
  12. Not much consolation, but all of a sudden Verdugo's OPS is only 110 points higher than Kike's (.796 to .686).
  13. Not feeling as confident myself. But I never feel very confident, just because it's baseball.
  14. Our highest OPS is .932, so that's a little doubtful.
  15. No question. But Kimmi was talking about the opposing pitcher getting a boost from an easy first out.
  16. If you're the Rays you can LOL With the Red Sox, whenever we tried the 'throw stuff against the wall' approach for a bullpen, it didn't work very well. See our 2015 bullpen. With Kimbrel we got one of the best relievers ever, for only 2 years and 24 million guaranteed, plus a team option year. If we had got him as a free agent for that deal, I think most people would have said it was a bargain.
  17. The Red Sox do have an .818 OPS in the first inning, however.
  18. Good question. Somebody there liked him, I guess.
  19. Mild overpay sums it up.
  20. It's unlikely you're going to trade Barnes to a contender and get back a useful arm for this year. Why would a contender trade one of their useful arms? It has to be a trade scenario that makes sense on both sides.
  21. They did, but it wasn't a throw in the towel trade, it was the exact opposite.
  22. 6 games back at the end of August (not July) when the team was ravaged by injuries. Like I say, there was some grumbling, but I don't think it was a huge deal.
  23. GMs are always thinking about trying to extract value from impending free agents, I expect. The question is whether any who are in contention would actually do it. It's like kicking your fans in the stomach. And baseball fans are already an endangered species.
  24. Wells, huh? Let's see. They traded him on August 31, 2006, when we were 6 games out of a Wild Card spot and half the team was on the DL. He had pitched only 47 innings with a 4.98 ERA, and brought back George Kottaras. I do recall that some Red Sox fans grumbled about it at the time, but I think it was a pretty faint grumbling.
