  1. If they fail, it might not hurt the players long-term - OTOH it doesn't help the team short-term. The front office might be leery of putting pressure on these guys by bringing them into a situation where the team is scuffling and fans are clamoring for a fix. That said I'm sure the front office is giving it a lot of consideration to it.
  2. Steve Cohen has taken some large operating losses on the Mets. He can afford to because he's worth over $20 billion. But you're not really guaranteed not to lose money.
  3. So what is your point, exactly? That owners like profits and salaries impact profits? I think we already know that. Not really sure what it is that you're trying to illuminate for us. "Ownership is going to get paid regardless of what players make?" What the hell does that mean? Steve Cohen has taken operating losses on the Mets. He can afford to because he's worth over $20 billion. Attitudes toward chasing rings and chasing wealth vary from one owner to the next.
  4. You're getting some stuff jumbled up here. CEO's are not necessarily owners. Sam Kennedy is the CEO of the Red Sox. I don't think his salary as CEO is higher than Rafael Devers's salary. Kennedy does have an ownership stake now, but that happened after he became CEO. So yeah, factory workers don't get paid more than the CEO, but some baseball players certainly do, so it's not a great analogy. To the larger point, the relationship among owners, players and fans is an interdependent one. They all need each other. The money flows from the fans to the owners to the players. If fans are disenchanted with the team's performance and think owners are profiteering at the expense of the team, the best case scenario is they're going to gripe about it, the worst is they're going to lose interest. Here at Talksox we tend to just stick with the griping...
  5. A lot of cracks showing in the bullpen though. Feels pretty scary right now.
  6. Hard to say with Slaten. This is a guy who had bad numbers in the minors, with a 5.35 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 210 innings. Bailey might have helped him a lot in 2024, but there's only so much he can do.
  7. Rafaela plays an excellent CF though. I think the most logical move is to trade Abreu - hopefully getting back something really worthwhile - which opens up RF for Anthony.
  8. July 31 is a long wait to do something about the bullpen.
  9. If Whitlock and Slaten both keep crapping the bed like this, the Sox are just dead meat. Looks like Brez should have done more for the pen.
  10. Odd question. You do know he's out for the season? My post was mainly just wishing him well. And I'm suggesting the Red Sox may have to make other plans for 2026 and beyond because of his injuries and other issues.
  11. Seconded. Hopefully he makes it back and still has a big league career. Might have to be with another team.
  12. It's the modern game. In the old days Houck would absolutely have been sent out for the 8th. Of course if Houck was sent out last night and got beat, Cora would be crucified for that too.
  13. Do we ever really do that with one game? I think if the bullpen ends up blowing a lot of games, you look at that. But you rarely look at one game in April.
  14. Teams should have the option of being able to give a guy a bonus payment to opt out. 😛
  15. I have rarely been less excited about a starting pitcher being ready to pitch again.
  16. Yes, all things considered, I think Abreu is still the most logical guy to trade, especially with Anthony knocking on the door.
  17. All good points!
  18. How impressive is this guy? Feels like he's already a franchise cornerstone. His performance and the way he carries himself speak well for the Sox development system.
  19. Did anyone ever tell you you really know how to keep a conversation going?
  20. It all has to be looked at in the context of having shoulder injury issues last year.
  21. It's not really anything official. Some people mean first 81 games/second 81 games when they talk about halves. And they're not wrong. 81 is in fact half of 162.
