  1. And oddly enough, the Dodgers are doing the opener thing tonight instead of Urias starting. I don't get it, really.
  2. I'm not sure how that would work. Your idea sounds a lot different from moon's. He's basically picturing the 2 guys pitching the 8th and 9th inning, up to 70 games each or so, for well over 100 innings each.
  3. The trend in the game is toward limiting innings. We're not going to see the re-emergence of 1978 Goose Gossages.
  4. Personally I would rather be a little more conventional and not risk the health of prized assets such as Whitlock and Houck, thank you very much.
  5. Kittredge logged the most innings of any Rays reliever/opener, at 71.2, almost identical to Whitlock.
  6. They just can't pitch that many innings in relief. Nobody does. Whitlock pitched 73 innings this year. I think 80 is a reasonable ceiling.
  7. What??? You're imagining each of them pitching every other game?
  8. Our hot streak is only 8 games old. They can last a month.
  9. But if they're capable of being effective starters who can give you 160 innings each, do you want to restrict them to 80 innings each instead?
  10. Cora might find it a little embarrassing...
  11. Personally I'm going with the good karma approach and saying I wish injury on no one.
  12. Yes, pitching is a whole new game now, and the Rays have been at the forefront. The Rays might also be an example of how you have to be careful not to out-clever yourself, as Cash may have done with McClanahan in Game 4, bringing him in in the 3rd. I was re-watching some of Game 4 last night and it was almost comical how much Smoltz talked about McClanahan being taken out of his routine and how that might affect him adversely.
  13. Much easier said than done.
  14. I'm not sure the COVID outbreak had much effect on the team's record. They were playing badly before it started.
  15. Gagne was a deadline trade in 2007 in which we gave up a package that included David Murphy and Kason Gabbard. I thought it was a good trade at the time. Papelbon and Okajima had been pitching a lot of innings. It seems that we acquired Gagne at the very moment he was cooked. We still won the World Series so I think Theo has to be given a full pass on that one.
  16. You sneaky devil.
  17. Greatest moment of braggadocio in sports history.
  18. There's no comfort in baseball.
  19. Yeah, it was a fun narrative for some folks to say he left us with nothing but scorched earth.
  20. That's my guess as well.
  21. Sometimes the most important move the head of ops makes is the manager he hires. Theo hired Francona. Ben hired (or traded for LOL) Farrell. Dave hired Cora. Bloom re-hired Cora. Hiring Cora may be one of Dave's biggest contributions to the success of the franchise and should not be taken lightly. And it was a very aggressive, very fast hire. Dave wanted Cora badly and made sure it happened. Meanwhile, Cashman dithered around and ending up hiring Boone. So yeah, I think Dave did OK, all things considered... And full marks to Bloom for seeing that Cora was still the right guy for the job even after all the mess.
  22. But nobody actually wants another deal like Price's ended up, do they?
  23. I like what both of them have done for the franchise, Dave and Bloom that is. But maybe the real genius is Henry? You can't draw it up any better than replacing Dave with Bloom at that point in time.
  24. Or didn't expect to make it as far as the LCS.
