  1. Max, the Dodgers are freaking stacked. They sign Bauer for huge money, lose him because of his off-field crimes, and then they trade for Scherzer and Trea Turner. The Giants had no real advantage playing a team that loaded with high-priced, elite talent.
  2. You're misinterpreting what those values represent, but you have lots of company, because most people do. Those values are an empirical calculation of the average cost of free agent players per 1 WAR. I'm not sure what sort of time window they use, but the average cost per 1 WAR is recalculated every year. Last I looked the average cost was about $8 million per 1 WAR.
  3. If I was a Giants fan, I'd be more apt to think it a tad unfair that the reward for winning 107 games and the division was to play a best 3 of 5 against a team that won 106 and had a run differential of +269 in the first round.
  4. It's going to be interesting to see how they handle Houck and Whitlock, that's for sure. Planning on both being in the rotation does seem risky. Unfortunately it brings back memories of the 2012 plan of moving both Bard and Aceves into the rotation. I'd certainly settle for a 50/50 split.
  5. Only a Red Sox physical?
  6. That Tigers team was better than their record. Run differential of +172 for a 99-63 Pythagorean. Verlander and Scherzer. They were a tough opponent.
  7. It's easy to get a SP'er signing right? Not so sure about that. I think Bloom will do well assembling pens without big spending.
  8. "Include Betts" sounds funny. We also had to eat half the money. Price hasn't looked like much this year, so it certainly seems like the right move. In total trading Price will save the team $30 million of AAV over 2 years. He opted out of 2020.
  9. We beat some good teams in the 2013 postseason though.
  10. The thing about Houck and Whitlock that makes them different from a guy like Chad Green is that they have legit potential as starters. It's a fundamental and logical principle that guys that are good enough to be starters should not be relievers.
  11. The '2013 was a fluke' thing was more about the last place finishes before and after, no?
  12. Yes, and not moan and groan for years about it later.
  13. My guess would be there's a huge difference in how they throw those 25 pitches. But Cora did of course try this to a limited extent in the 2018 postseason. And then you may have heard about this Restgate thing the next year...
  14. It did work out, mainly because the pitchers that were at Roberts's disposal are all pretty freakin' good. I'm not sure it produced any advantage.
  15. Right, for these things we like to call 'situations' that crop up regularly and randomly...
  16. I don't much see the point in talking about it if it's something they or any other team simply wouldn't do. We might as well talk about getting starters back to 200 innings...
  17. You're dreaming, man. This is just not a real possibility, and you know it. When not even the Rays will push a multi-purpose reliever past 75 innings, you're not going to see a maqical jump to 100 innings and more. Remember Scott Proctor? If not look him up. Torre rode him a little too hard and ended his career early.
  18. That's all water under the Tobin. What I'm saying is that going forward, you can't really count on many durable Hall of Fame studs like Scherzer coming along. You're more likely to get another Price, frankly. Price's career numbers suggested he would hold up better than he did.
  19. Some of us have speculated that the injury concerns were factored into the deal. $145 million is a lot of money, but it's a lot less than some pitchers have gotten on long term deals, with Cole of course setting the new bar at $324 million.
  20. And sometimes you have to say to a player "let's see what you've got". Hopefully Sale will kick ass. But if not, I'm quite sure there's a Plan B, and Houck or Pivetta are probably involved in that plan.
  21. Some Sox fans think we should only use a 3 man pitching staff of Eovaldi, Houck and Whitlock the rest of the way.
  22. Stanley may have been the last of the 'rubber arms'. I think Whitlock and Houck probably throw too hard to be able to do anything like that. It's just a different game now in many ways.
  23. Scherzers simply don't come along very often.
  24. This needs confirmation, but I believe that the 14 pitcher limit is a temporary pandemic rule and if things ever get to post-pandemic, it will likely go back to 13.
  25. Speaking of Whitlock, that job he did in Game 4 has to go down as one of the great moments ever for a Red Sox reliever. Comes in with a man on second, no outs, tie game, 8th inning, and proceeds to get 6 outs on 15 freakin' pitches, keeps the run from scoring, and makes a great heads-up fielding play backing up third base on the overthrow! Thanks Cashman!
