    I agree, it had to happen. Just too many red flags that this situation was never going to resolve in a good way. Which is pretty scary when you're talking about a player who you still have 8.5 years and 250 million to get through with. I know I'm in the minority but I think all things considered this was a great deal done by Breslow, shedding the whole contract and getting some stuff back.

    Man, Breslow is really taking a pile of flak these days for being inexperienced and a bad communicator and so on.

    Yeah but if you go game by game like that, he lost some games too.

    Devers is on pace for 4-5 WAR. He's having a typical Devers season. This trade might not have happened otherwise.

    Because the big club playing Campbell every day is costing them wins, and they're trying to make the playoffs.

    But this is misleading because you if you do it for every player you end up with much more than 100%. Because other players have RBI on Devers's runs and other players have runs on Devers's RBI. Devers was part of 97 runs but he wasn't fully responsible for them. The only fully responsible run is a solo home run. The Runs Above Replacement numbers are a much better representation of 'runs added'.

    We're not going to lose 15% of our runs. In 2024 Devers's RAR per B-R was 37 runs. Pro-rate that for what's left of 2025, we would lose about 20 runs, or 2 wins, compared to a replacement level DH.

    Yeah, we hear a lot about 'players' managers' like Cora, but we don't hear too much about 'players' CBOs'...

    Yes, there were questions about trading Sale right from the start. I went back and checked the thread. All the real old schoolers here hated it. My first post expressed approval because I thought it meant big starter acquisitions were on the way. But I was questioning it within a few days. It's all there in the Talksox archives.

    Price helped win a ring, for some that counts a lot...and I'm in that group. Dombrowski's primary job was to win a ring IMHO. He got it done.

    Yes, it's been quite a hodgepodge. The only guy whose moves were consistently easy to understand was Dombrowski.

    They low-balled Lester on the extension offer. They offered him $145 million as a free agent. The Cubs upped it by $20 million and that was it.

    That "philosophy" lasted about 5 minutes, unless you believe the Sox were just playing PR with their free agent offers to Lester.

    The baseball free agent market is an irrational market. Was Soto "worth" more than double Mookie Betts?

    Yes, there are 3 teams in notable offensive funks right now: -Red Sox -Yankees -The team that's playing against the Red Sox It's strange because June is usually a good hitters month. But that's baseball.
