  1. Of course it doesn't always work. But when you're 3 games out with 2 months left and you expect to have Chris Sale and some other guys ready to come back, do you write it off? In retrospect the answer would be yes. At the time it isn't that easy. I do understand your point. We just have a philosophical disagreement, I think. In a sense you can blame the expanded playoffs for giving so many teams a potential chance to get in.
  2. How about "these guys with less major league experience", then?
  3. I think tanking and fire sales are bad for the game.
  4. How many kinds of defensive penalties have you seen called in NFL games?
  5. Yep. And in hockey, a pass across two lines used to be illegal. Then they legalized it because they thought it would increase goal-scoring.
  6. There are plenty of rules that limit what NFL players can do. I believe "illegal formation" is a thing...
  7. I think a lot of safe/out calls in baseball are very difficult. I'm sure you're right that tennis isn't that easy either, though.
  8. Tennis is a relatively simple game to officiate.
  9. Sounds like you're ready to call him a bust.
  10. So maybe they shouldn't have spent so much this year. Maybe they should have gone full-on tank and fire sale. Trying to please the fans had a lot to do with this combination of high payroll and suckitude. I was one of the fans who wanted them not to tank or fire sale, so I'm willing to live with the results.
  11. Is every official bad, or is officiating really hard?
  12. Do you really find it unbelievable? If so, I find that amusing.
  13. Yes, that's what I thought.
  14. Not Red Sox fans, I would hope.
  15. Red Sox fans will always find lots to complain about. This board is just a small sampling of evidence.
  16. If you're a stolen base fan, you're kind of rooting for the wrong team. For many years the Red Sox were notorious for their lack of speed and their emphasis on slugging. I'd say it was actually analytics that changed the team's approach.
  17. Well, Story did have a fracture in his wrist from an HBP. He seems like a gamer to me.
  18. Stolen bases and caught stealing are factored into WAR in the baserunning grades.
  19. Don't worry - no trade proposed on Talksox has ever occurred.
  20. Abreu's .953 OPS in 128 Fenway PA's is attractive.
  21. Abreu also leads the AL in hits, has a .383 OBP and a 137 OPS+. I think he has to be a target if the price is "reasonable".
  22. And another "interesting" decision by Booney, bringing in Weissert to face Correa with the game on the line. Weissert has an 8.22 ERA after the game.
  23. How about some insane Ted Williams numbers. Q: In what 2 seasons did Williams have the highest OPS, counting only full seasons, 100 games or more? A: 1941 and 1957 - 16 years apart! 1941 age 22 406/553/735 - OPS 1287 1957 age 38 388/526/731 - OPS 1257 Williams had a career OPS+ of 191
