Yes and no. a) Cashman has been GM a long time. The Yankees have one of the highest payrolls every year and their fans have high expectations. c) The Yankees haven't won the World Series since 2009, and have only won one AL pennant since 2003. Of course if they win it all this year, that would wipe all that out.

To me the trade is a footnote, and the real question will always be how did it get to that point.

I don't blame Bloom for trading Betts. But I'm starting to think Henry and Werner really blew it there. They just didn't make enough of an effort to keep him IMHO. We may rue it for a long time.

In my opinion Ryan was just a freak of nature. The closest you will find in the current generation is Verlander, and even he finally needed TJS. I still think of Billy Martin and his 1980 Oakland A's starting rotation. Billy rode them hard, and they all ended up having short careers. Today's pitchers are throwing harder than ever and probably spinning the ball harder than ever too. The toll on their arms is self-evident. You're right that the babying doesn't seem to help. Not sure anything would. -
And IF Nate comes back and looks good in a few starts, a QO for him might came back into the conversation.

You're right that it's not simple, however I have to agree with the sentiment that the team needs to show marked improvement next year for Bloom's job to be safe.

I'm sure the Padres will be relieved to know the money they're paying Tatis, Machado and Hosmer is not spending.
