  1. Refsnyder joined the team "for good" on June 10. On June 26 the Red Sox were 42-31, their high point over .500 for the season. Ergo, Refsnyder was not "too late" and that was not really a significant part of the team's problems this year.
  2. Cot's is not much good any more. Notice how they just removed traded guys like Bradley and Vaz from the 2022 numbers? We need another source for payroll.
  3. $150/6 is right, but it won't be enough. $180/7 might be the absolute ceiling for the Red Sox, but that's just a guess of course.
  4. Good post. We need a like button or something here.
  5. Keith Law Kimmi Slasher Larry Cook notin That's your fearsome fivesome right there.
  6. No, but he'll surely get more than the 3/$60 that was left on his deal.
  7. What about Correa?
  8. Or trading Sonny Gray and bad-mouthing him as a guy who couldn't play in New York.
  9. That would have been the smart move. And it would also have completely contradicted the mission statement of "competing while rebuilding".
  10. I think the best way to look at it is to forget about those three years. The moment Bogey opts out it's all back to square one. What's troublesome in determining Bogey's "true market value" is the wild disparity in paydays received by other big name shortstops. Seager $325 mill Story $140 mill Correa $105 mill
  11. "DD decimated the farm" has been a thing here for years.
  12. What intrigues about that Yankee fan take is that he says nothing about Judge and the offer that the Yankees chose to publicize, a move that Judge was reportedly unhappy about.
  13. Here you go folks. Yankees fans should love Red Sox incompetence with Xander Bogaerts by Thomas Carannante You might hate the way the New York Yankees do business. And it’s sometimes hard to disagree with that assertion. Sometimes they’re too by-the-book. Sometimes they’re too stingy for a $6 billion franchise. Sometimes they just never “go for it,” especially when making trades. But what they don’t do is disrespect franchise legends and willingly make their roster worse. Some might refer to the Derek Jeter contract negotiations back in 2010 as a situation where that was almost indicative of poor behavior — and that’s sort of right! — but in the end, Jeter signed a high-dollar deal. Moot point. As for the Boston Red Sox, they couldn’t be further on the other end on the spectrum. And don’t forget! This is a $4 billion franchise, they’re not far off! They pretend to be the lovely little underdogs that don’t have a top payroll, but that’s not who they are! It’s not even who they were in 2004 when they had the league’s second-highest payroll. Where did this narrative come from? The Sox ownership group also has stake in the Liverpool soccer team. These guys print money and probably control the Federal Reserve. But since 2020, they’ve traded Mookie Betts and have seemingly soured their relationship with star shortstop Xander Bogaerts for whatever reason. Yankees fans might have their head in the sand when the Red Sox successfully re-tool and win the World Series in 2025, but right now it’s best we relish in them fumbling the bag with yet another franchise cornerstone. The disingenuous quotes that come from Red Sox executives are hilarious. If what Sam Kennedy said were true, the team would’ve approached Bogaerts about an extension at ANY POINT dating back to last November, and prior to the last few days. The shortstop said himself it’s been crickets all season long. He signed a six-year, $120 million extension under Dave Dombrowski’s reign and has an opt-out clause for this upcoming year, which he’ll surely exercise because he can cash out on one more long-term deal and likely make a higher AAV. The Red Sox, based on their behavior, clearly have no interest in that, though, even with nobody formidable in their pipeline to take over shortstop before teenager Marcelo Mayer reaches the bigs. But there’s Trevor Story! Don’t forget they invested $140 million in him last offseason for … no reason other than to drive Bogaerts out of town? What was the point of this? Is it mind-boggling, though? The Red Sox didn’t go above and beyond to pay their MVP and best homegrown player since Ted Williams, and then traded him to the Dodgers for peanuts. They wouldn’t pay Jon Lester and traded him in the middle of a season to the Oakland Athletics! They jumped ship on Andrew Benintendi for reasons we may never understand. Just because they’ve idiotically splurged for guys like David Price, Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez in recent years doesn’t fully paint the picture of them being “spenders.” That’s only part of the equation. They’re spending the money in the wrong places. Then they’re using that as an excuse to not do right by the guys who have brought them the success and recognition the franchise never even deserved in the first place. Bogaerts was essentially taking in his final game at Fenway as a farewell. The fanbase “feels” like he’s not coming back. It seems the damage has already been done. And for what reason? This team can and should afford almost anybody they like, especially those who are durable and still in their prime with two World Series rings! Like we said, Freezing Cold Take this in 2025. Don’t care. Just take a glimpse over in Boston to see how they’re handling business and know that the Yankees, for as frustrating as they might be, would never be this callous and insulting.
  14. The Mariners look very much for real. I watched some of the first game. Castillo is an impressive pitcher. Seattle did a great job landing him.
  15. But because of their different contract expiry dates, they have to deal with Xander first.
  16. And, as I just read, the Mariners are the first road team to do it.
  17. They used the relief ace strategy and it worked to perfection. Credit to Showalter.
  18. I certainly wouldn't, but I understand why the values work out. It's all about proven commodity vs. potential.
  19. I actually kind of like the new format. The home field thing might be questionable, but as we saw yesterday, home field doesn't guarantee much. And I like the idea of the division winner with the worst record getting put in this round. There's more of an incentive to put up a good W-L record.
  20. Actually the Yankees have become much like that too, as they showed with the Ottavino salary dump last year.
  21. Some crazy pitching in this Rays-Guardians game.
  22. If he had no limits, Mookie would still be with the team, and Bogaerts and Devers would be locked up long term. That seems like proof enough in itself.
  23. Well, you have to give them credit, they have had a window open a LONG time.
  24. What most of us believe, and what we think has been proven over time, is that JH is willing to have one of the highest payrolls in baseball every year, but he also has his limits, which he showed most recently by letting Mookie go. And we know that JH could spend much more than he does if he really wanted to, by digging into his own pocket, but he's shown that he isn't willing to do it. So what is it exactly that you disagree with, and what is it that you believe about JH and his spending? Or what have I not stated properly?
  25. You should never blame the fans for anything. All they really do is pay the bills.
