  1. I really don't think there was anything better available at the time. I'm sure DD called around a bit. It was mid-season.
  2. Right, so it's irrelevant to the discussion.
  3. Mookie was totally different. And 2020 was a total lost season for Sox fans. And a very strange season period. I think the Devers trade was a much more divisive one for Sox fans, with a lot of people going ballistic about it and a fair number thinking it was the right move.
  4. When was the offer made, though? I heard about Bloom turning down an offer like that, but we're talking about the 2023-2024 offseason here.
  5. Don't necessarily disagree, but Duran, Rafaela and Abreu are all playing pretty damn good, so I find it hard to be upset that they're playing...
  6. What other offer are you referring to?
  7. That was the one time Dave really did act a little desperate... I don't fault him because Buchholz had just gone down and the need was definitely there. I assume Pomeranz was the best he could do.
  8. The Sox recent success is absolutely meaningful. They have pulled into a tie for the last wild card spot. And sweeping the bad teams is not a gimme. The Yankees and Rays both went 2-1 against the Rockies.
  9. Gonzalez has a heck of a power stroke. He really crushes it when he connects.
  10. C'mon, you were just talking about Bello, Giolito and Anthony looking good. It's fine to look at total bodies of work and to look at recent results too.
  11. 22 games in. .706 OPS 2 HR 9 RBI 0.0 bWAR Dealing with groin and back issues. Will not play any 1B until after the ASB at least.
  12. Well, MLB pitchers must be crazy to keep throwing him all those meatballs. Apparently they have no data or video to go on. 😀
  13. I would suggest that philosophy changed some time around 2004, when they added Schilling and Foulke.
  14. drewski does have a point that in the playoffs an 'ace' has magnified importance because there are more off days and they might pitch 1/3 of the games. Example: in 2023 Texas played 17 playoff games and Eovaldi started 6 of them.
  15. What I have noticed is that there has been very little complaining about letting Pivetta walk. That's because they invested heavily in Crochet, and also shelled out for Buehler. Plus the extension for Bello. People understand you can only spend so much. It's a sign of how sophisticated Sox fans are. 🙃
  16. I think history shows you need at least 2 starters performing well in the playoffs. Just going back 2 years, in 2023 the Rangers had Eovaldi and Montgomery, in 2024 the Dodgers had Yamamoto, Buehler and Flaherty.
  17. I must be going senile because I didn't catch on that it was you LOL
  18. The only thing is, beating up on bad teams is something the Sox had not been doing before this.
  19. It's kind of crazy that of all the people the Giants might choose to work out with Devers at 1B, they go with Will Clark, a man obviously still capable of saying incredibly dumb stuff.
  20. These days Fred is focused with laser precision on Rafaela's plate approach and how pitchers are going to eventually realize they shouldn't be throwing him any strikes.
  21. A few wins make me giddy, I know, but the team seems to have some real spark now. Part of that comes from the energy infusion of Anthony and Mayer, part from Story and Rafaela really stepping it up. Abreu, Narvaez, Gonzalez have been great. Duran has been better lately. The offense should be quite decent when Bregman returns. It all comes down to how the pitching holds up.
  22. Bregman passed on a 6-172 offer from Detroit. He took a lot less guaranteed money to sign with the Sox.
