  1. Like what? There's nothing to indicate that Betts and Bogaerts are anything but model citizens. There's only one word that can justify any of it, and the word is RISK. Henry has been burned by that word on some really bad signings. Unfortunately, his newfound risk aversion may have led to letting go of the exact ones he should have made more effort to keep.
  2. Why do you think that? At this point, if they were to pay Devers what he's asking, it would controvert the principles they're applying everywhere else.
  3. The team could hire you as a defense lawyer. You know how to break things down into the contingencies and qualifiers and cast shadows of doubt everywhere. To use a current popular expression, from the "30,000 foot view", it seems strange that a team with the wealth of the Red Sox has failed to retain 3 young stars like Betts, Bogaerts and Devers. You'd think they'd manage to hold onto one of them at least.
  4. Well, let's look at their OPS+ the last 5 years: Bogey 2018 135 2019 139 2020 128 2021 129 2022 131 Kike 2018 117 2019 87 2020 81 2021 108 2022 75 That makes Xander a 30-40% better hitter. Did Santa put some really nice ganja under the tree for you this year?
  5. Those are some fairly sizable ifs.
  6. They'll probably put some sort of medical clause in there, I'm sure they will strike a deal. As 5 Gloves might say, maybe this shows the Mets believe there's a Sanity Clause.
  7. Everyone is entitled to their outlooks. Merry Christmas, folks. Just having a rum and egg nog right now.
  8. Here's the thing. We finished 8 games out of the playoffs last year and 21 back in the division. Those are the deltas we have to make up. On top of that we lose our best player. And we had all that money coming off the books. That's why they were expected to be quite aggressive this offseason. It seems to be more of the wishy-washy approach that some accuse Bloom of at last year's deadline.
  9. A five year plan might be acceptable for a team that's tanking like the Cubs or the Astros did. Or a small market team like Miami. But not for a team with such a high payroll every year.
  10. It only stands to reason Bloom is going to add a starter. But the distressing thing is you can't be sure what Bloom is going to do. He never does what anyone here predicts as far as signings go.
  11. Hang'em prefers one year deals most of all.
  12. Devers was 134 in 2021, 141 in 2022.
  13. You're assuming that Devers, Story and Kike are all going to be healthier than last year. The odds are you're right, but it's no sure thing, plus other players may get injured. There are always injuries.
  14. The rotation is the X factor for sure. It could be surprisingly good, or it could be a disaster of biblical proportions. Having this much X factor usually doesn't work out well.
  15. Why should we give them a pass for not seeing where things were going? That's incompetence personified.
  16. We paid JBJ 17.5 million for one season, that's how it worked out. In the big picture that's not much money for a team like the Red Sox.
  17. The bullpen adds are good. Yoshida carries a lot of X factor. I hope he does well. If we call all those a wash, we're still a 78 win team.
  18. Bogaerts was a 6 WAR player last year. You can start from there. We haven't replaced Eovaldi, Wacha or Hill.
  19. Maybe they should've extended Bogey and not signed Story. Now there's a radical idea.
  20. It's the starting pitching I'm talking about. We're down to Eovaldi, Kluber, or a big trade.
  21. As for Bogaerts, it's the insistence that he was their "No. 1 Priority" this offseason that has made them look ridiculous. As I've said, their PR really sucks lately.
  22. It's the offseason we're going through right now that feels like incompetence. This was supposed to be the flashpoint, remember? Instead we're all scratching our heads.
  23. No we're not acting like they're saviors. Nice hyperbole LOL. They just give us more of a fighting chance.
  24. moon, I said ownership, and you started right back in on Bloom. Please read a little more carefully.
  25. It's not about the clock ticking any more. It's about the shelves being almost empty.
