  1. We're in no position to condemn the Yankees' management, I don't think. The Yankees are in a major drought championship-wise, but they make the playoffs every damn year, and they haven't finished below .500 since 1992. And they'll be one of the pre-season favorites to win it all this year.
  2. It's great to try to model yourself after a system that's working. But you still need to make smart decisions all along the way. Bloom has done a pretty good job with the farm, no question. But we don't know yet if he's capable of making all those smart decisions. So it's not like there's any certainty here. Dombrowski is indeed the virtual antithesis to Bloom. Dave goes for the prime cuts and pays top dollar. Now he has an owner who seems to really dig that approach. The Phillies made it to Game 6 of the Series this year, and added Trea Turner and some other pieces. He's an Old Schooler's dream. We'll see how it all plays out.
  3. moon, you are a true believer.
  4. I must say, though, that fans who pay a lot of money to go to the games are in a different position than fans like me who don't spend much at all on baseball anymore. I think they have more of a right to gripe about paying big money to watch a season like 2022. And the prices going up for 2023.
  5. 2020 was just Bizarro World. Remember we didn't have to pay Price that year either. Then again the team lost a pile of money regardless, of course.
  6. It's going to be all about run prevention, I think.
  7. Yoshida has averaged 26 HR per 150 games, so he does have some sock.
  8. Like I say, they need something to write about during the slow holiday season.
  9. moonslav and notin are trying to be the voices of reason, and I respect that. I'm just venting my spleen. I'm filled with doubt about the decisions that are being made, but Henry and Bloom are probably right on a number of them. I have to admit I'm fascinated by how the front office is going to handle it if 2023 really sucks.
  10. No we don't know everything, but I think it's fair to say that the Red Sox have drawn somewhat conservative lines on far they'll go to keep any player, whether it's Betts, Bogaerts or Devers. We'll see how their strategy plays out.
  11. Correct. The actual impact of the millionaire's tax for a Red Sox player is 2% of income above $1 million. The previous rate was 5%, now it's 9%, so the increase is 4%, * half a season played in Mass. So this will cost Kike Hernandez $200,000 on $10 million. That's the difference that needs to be made up.
  12. Sale's tax hit is $25.8 mill. Eating $20 mill a year of it would be colossally stupid.
  13. Well, this is a twist, other teams having reported interest that won't come to anything. MLB writers need something, anything to write about over the slow Christmas season.
  14. And over the last 2 years Verdugo has a total fWAR of 3.2, 1.6 avg., which makes him by definition a below average player.
  15. Yes, without Texas's favorable tax environment, who knows what they'd have had to pay for Seager, Semien and deGrom! They got all 3 for only $685 mill!
  16. They went the ballsy route with Mookie. Can't really say that's been a resounding success either!
  17. How can anyone doubt our coaching expertise after what we've done with those guys?
  18. And as we know, the Red Sox having an exemplary recent history of making substandard outfielders better fielders.
  19. A deadline trade of Devers might actually yield a better haul. But that plan runs the risk of the team being in the same position as last year.
  20. Trading Devers before the season would really take balls.
  21. Correa has an old injury that's causing concerns. Kind of a specific issue, isn't it?
  22. Yes, and so far the Sox have been lucky in one sense, that Betts and Bogaerts have gone to the other league and the other coast and we don't have to watch them play against us very often. Devers in pinstripes is a more gruesome scenario.
  23. Personally I lay the blame for Betts, Bogaerts and Devers all at the feet of ownership. You saw what happened with Judge. Hal Steinbrenner stepped in and said we'll pay whatever it takes, quite possibly against the wishes of Cashman. The same thing happened years earlier with A-Rod.
  24. And he has seen how stupid some front offices are prepared to be.
